Chemical spill in Benton (UPDATE)

We're hearing reports about a hazardous chemical spill in Benton and the evacuation of the area where it occurred.

We'll keep you updated here as we compile more information.

UPDATE: Here is a summary from KUAR public radio:

The eastbound lanes of Interstate 30 were temporarily shut down this afternoon while exit 106 remains closed as Saline County authorities along with representatives from Dupont try to contain a chemical spill at a truck stop.

A truck carrying hazardous, flammable material made a stop at J.J.'s Truck Stop on exit 106, caused a spill and has pressure building up inside. For safety, nearby businesses and schools were evacuated for a short time as well as the eastbound lanes of Interstate 30 shut down.

The eastbound lanes are now open as well as the schools said to return at 2pm. However, exit 106 remains closed.

Spector's pissed.

Sen. Arlen Specter (R-Pa.), the top Republican on the Senate Judiciary Committee, suggested that Gonzales's status as the nation's leading law enforcement officer might not last through the remainder of President Bush's term, pointedly disputing the attorney general's public rationale for the mass firings.
