No Wal-Mart bank -- yet

Citing "manufactured controversy," Wal-Mart has dropped its application to get into banking through an industrial loan corporation. That doesn't mean it won't continue with other efforts to expand into many services traditionally offered by banks.

Obviously they wanted to issue their own credit card, not just be an agent for the Big Three. Sears has their own fully owned credit card, which for years produced more profit than retail operations. A company such as Walmart who operates on very low margins, will try many avenues to up their take-home margin.
