The fixation on gay people

Thanks to the invaluable Daily Kos for a direction-finder to a Philadelphia newspaper column by Joe Murray, a former staff attorney for the American Family Association, the ultra-conservative religious group in Tupelo, Miss., that has made a living on gay-bashing. He has had a conversion. His column has no direct relationship to the recent debate in Arkansas over gay foster parenting, but the words are worth considering as anti-gay groups consider a petition campaign to ban a nearly non-existent practice on account of their fear and loathing of a small group of people. Take a taste:

How could preachers preach such vehement messages towards gays when it was clear that the Bible was unclear at best, and silent at worse, on the issue? Why recklessly condemn a group of individuals? Why fixate on them when your congregation is knee deep in divorce (Jesus had some pretty clear words on that issue)? And as for gluttony, how could preachers lecture gays on restraint when churches host pot luck dinner after pot luck dinner and not be deemed hypocritical?

It was this hypocrisy that caused me to open my eyes. Those on the Christian right, for whatever reasons, have become fixated on homosexuality. They are obsessed by it and perverse form of vengeance appears to be fueling their inquisition. I may be wrong, but I think actions are speaking much louder than words here.

The whole gay issue is no longer about the quest for the Truth; it is about fear and loathing. It is about shame and sorrow. It is anything but Christian.

Rita Sklar of the ACLU had a similar thought when asked about the Family Council's threatened petition drive in Arkansas. She told Stephens Media:

"Most Arkansans do not share this general animus toward gay people that the Family Council is clearly seething with, and they will not go for anything that dehumanizes a section of our population by questioning their parenting skills, their suitability to be good parents," Sklar said.

Can the simple message, love they neighbor, prevail at the Arkansas ballot box?

Comments

(I just posted this on another thread...but it seems to fit better here)

Though hate is nasty/destructive wherever it resides, I prefer the overt kind. I prefer the neighbor/bigot/politician who admits straight up that they hate me/mine and all things me. I know where I stand and can act (or not act) accordingly. It's the duplicitous/hidden kind of hate that I loath and find difficult to heal. And though 'hate' exists everywhere, religion seems to be an especially fertile breeding ground (history, history, history). Whether it's the dominant/passive organizational hierarchy of religions or the predispositions of those who are drawn to those hierarchies, I don't know. (I'm reminded of a bumper sticker though: It's not god I have a problem with, it's his fan club.) Either way, we've got Muslims sacrificing people as suicide bombers and treating women immorally/deplorably...all in the name of God; and we've got American Christians fighting the Iraq war and judging gays/women as less than them...all in the name of God. And neither religion is satisfied with keeping its judgments inside their 'houses'...each wants its government to create laws/barriers that reflect their religious views. And, this institutional hate is almost always sugar-coated as something other than what it is...'We don't hate gays, we just hate what they do and don't want them tainting 'our' sacred marriage vows.'

I guess this is my long-winded way of saying that all hate is not equal...that it is more egregious to use God to hate. Some redneck bubba who stands to my face and tells me he hates smart-ass, uppity women is much preferred to a Jerry Cox blabbering on about how the Equal Rights Amendment is bad for the 'family'; and how 'God' said I'm less than men in the church hierarchy.

The ACLU's work is everywhere bigoted ignorance tries to curtail the rights of the rest of us. And, I'd appreciate it if Satan would quit disguising himself as one of our Representatives.

First off I would like to see you prosecuted for using someone else's name for your posting - John Boozman.
Second, your gutter language is a sure reflection of your sick mind.

The only church I ever enjoyed or actually had pride in was a church who INCLUDED folks from all walks of life, from many, many, spititual backgrounds.
In fact, my mother is a licensed minister in that multi denominational church and for years held three standing room only sermons on sundays.

One of my favorite songs we would all sing together... Imagine

Now that represents an open mind, an open heart and an open spirit.
------------

On a completely different topic... I think Pryor just voted with Democrats to pass the final Senate version of the Iraq/Afghanistan funding bill.

I wonder if he decided to read his mail and check his messages before voting this time around?

What kind of church do you go to John Boozman? It's got to be one where it is common to use "dick" and "Lord" in the same sentence. Sounds kinda perverse and deviant to me.

You ought to be ashamed of yourself for using this type of language in a public forumn.

I bet that your Maw and Paw would surely give you a good "whooping" with a switch.

Generally speaking,

Christian gaybasher usually have some homosexual fixations skeletons in their own closets, re Ted Haggard.
I would suggest that someone take a look in the folks' closets over at the Family Council of Arkansas and I guarantee you yessiree that they'll need a lot of soap and a few shovels to clean out the corrupted mess.
Anyway, Jesus said "If I be lifted up from the earth, I'll draw all men (even homosexuals and Pharisites) unto me."
But the Religious Right is probably the most-serving, self-centered movement in American history, and has nothing to do with Christ and his teachings.

I think homosexual sex is a sin, think the same thing about hetero sex outside of marriage, think the same thing about lying and gluttony.

Do I think foster kids and kids up for adoption would be better off with a traditional male/female married couple as a general rule? Sure do.

But I don't read any stories about the glut of foster parent applicants the state is wading through. I don't read about how there are so many more people wanting to adopt handicapped or troubled kids than there are kids available.

If I am to believe the scanty research I've seen, foster kids may have a reduced risk of physical or mental abuse in a gay household though the risk difference is purported to be slight.

The kids deserve a chance for something resembling a normal stable life and if that is in a two-female or two male household where someone will help them with their homework, keep them clean and in clean clothes, and make them feel valuable, send them on because it beats being warehoused with a married male/female couple who have been asked to take on more kids than they can reasonably handle.

Well said Well. That's a truly civic response to a public policy concern.

I gues with this logic, we can say that since we have a shortage of school teachers, we should let child molesters who have a teaching license back in the classroom. Some are missing the point: the problem is not the children but it's the continuation of the breakdown of simple morals in our society. First, Elvis couldn't be seen on tv from the waist down. Then, he could. Then, we had no gay characters on TV. Then Ellen's tv character "came out" 'bout a decade ago and every show and movie has to have one. Now, Steve and Bob want to be married and have some kids. Myself, I don't really care what you do in the bedroom. Do it with whoever you want. I have gay friends (more than one) that I care about but I've told them I think morally, their lifestyle choice is wrong. We still get along fine. But oh no, we have to have the gay lifestyle shoved into our faces on TV, movies, and in public. I really am tired of the gay agenda and how I should "accept" it and be more "tollerant". Why do we have to talk about everyone's sex life in public? And that's what it is: one's sex life. It's not the same as race or one's gender. I'm not buying it. And Max, I think the bible does discuss it clearly.

Hey Max:
Was the post earlier this mornign really from John Boozman?
I noticed it's magically disappeared.

ARK. BLOG: It was clearly meant as satire. But it exceeded the crudity limit, loose as it is around here.

Why do queers and queers lovers always lie.
They don't know and do not care what the creator says about them. The only way for queers to be loved is for them to stop being in a queer relationship, period!
MOST OF US Want to shut their mouths, go away, vanish, better yet, hide .

"MOST OF US Want to shut their mouths, go away, vanish, better yet, hide ."

Then by all means...go away, vanish, better yet, hide...

Your words...

And I guess you have a direct line to your "creator"? Otherwise I guess you wouldn't know what your "creator" has to say about "queers"?

And don't throw the bible at me...it was written, rewritten, edited and abridged by men...

It's easy to confuse signs of trouble with the usual adult turmoil--it's hard to tell the difference. But when real problems are in the making, the signs outlined here usually come in clusters.--

Inside straight: there is no "logic" to your logic comparing gays to sexual molesters. Just bigotry, bias, prejudice, and the soft lie approach.
As to the Bible discussing it clearly, gimme a break. You're just one of those selective discriminators who pick some verses to back your belief and ignore others. (Just tell me with a straight face that you follow all the dictums in Leviticus to the letter - you wouldn't even be on the internet, for one.)
Of course, the true- believin', Bible-beatin', queer-bashin' pro on this site has rung in with his usual worthless diatribe. He ignores Jesus's verdict that the greatest commandment is to love one another as we love ourselves. He ignores the fact that there is not one word from Jesus on the subject; he ignores the fact that the original Hebrew for Leviticus does not condemn homosexuality; he ignores the fact that the Bible he so loves has 321 verses that says slavery is okay.
He ignores a lot of stuff in his Bible in order to preach hatred. He's the type who says "Yes, but...." to the words of Jesus and then claims him as his savior.
In fact, Jesus spoke out more about the hypocrisy and sham of so-called true-believers than he did about the shame of any sinner.
Fascist Christians are our label for unrepentant bigots such as ye. People who spout their anti-human message just like the Nazis did decades ago, telling us with anger in their hearts that they're doing this because "God commands it."
Just like those Nazis said so many years ago who slaughtered millions of Jews and murdered gypsies, homosexuals, political prisoners, Jehovah Witnesses, etc:

"We were just following orders."

Oh Joy, the foamers are out in force today. The time of month when the Dixie Outfitters crowd are jonesin' for meth and are out of Old Miwaulkee Beer and cheap generic cigs. Who better to put their redneck boots down on than the gays, lesbians, and transpeople of Arkansas. Cause the Bible tells 'em so?

So their daughters have 2 failed marriages before age 25. Just as long as tbey are not married to blacks. Since Ol' Faubus has went over to the hear-younder, it ain't been fashionable to pick on them blacks, cause they fought and won their rights. No, its the neighborhood lesbian couple, or the "tall" woman with "large" hands that has a deep voice that their vitrol is spewed on.

Hope you "Forget, Hell" folk understand what i'm sayin', ya hear.

>Some are missing the point: the problem is not the children but it's the continuation of the breakdown of simple morals in our society.<
Inside

Boy, you can second that one. By the time a kid is 12 they have witnessed 15,000 violent killings on TV..oh and no anal sex or oral sex.
What gives? Killing is preferred to oral sex?

"But oh no, we have to have the gay lifestyle shoved into our faces on TV, movies, and in public."
Inside

As an adult can you not change channels? I found most "gay shows" dull, boring, childish but that is no reason to treat a gay person as an outsider who for some reason does not deserve the same rights as others.

Let's face it most wacknutjob religions are OBSESSED with sex.
James Dobson comes to mind, as well as Rev Hagggard, Jimmy Swaggart, the whole slew of perverts who manage to capture the great unread and play upon the basest of fears.
_

Now comes chasv with his little closet homo scaring him into near insanity.

Charlie, c'mon now tell us how many days a year your momma let you skip school to go huntin' ?
_

Inside, there is one word in your diatribe that rings true. Simple, it is certainly how you think.
If you have such trouble living in the 21st century you can find other places in the world still living in the Middle Ages - but that might be too progressive for you also.
You're wrong - it's not a "lifestyle choice" it's who they are.
But you do have all the talking points down pat: gay agenda. The gay agenda is the US civil rights agenda - making the country live up to its highest values. You want the country to be dragged down into the mud of bigotry - tha't's your Anti-Gay Agenda.
You identify another core aspect of your problem at the end. It's not about sex stupid, its about affection, attraction and love. Do you debase whatever relationship you have with your wife and focus on it as sex? She must be a very unhappy human being.
Gays don't need your acceptance or tolerance. They need you not be eaten up with ignorance. Now go get an education from your purported gay friends.

Oh CHASV. There is no creator. But if there was, it did not speak in your language which is clearly why you have no comprehension of the world.

Lwood I'd like to meet you. See if you are human or animal, with fangs... You write like you have demons.

"Lwood I'd like to meet you. See if you are human or animal, with fangs... You write like you have demons."

My image of Lwood will never be the same...

Janus, you nailed him there.

"It's not about sex stupid, its about affection, attraction and love. Do you debase whatever relationship you have with your wife and focus on it as sex? She must be a very unhappy human being."

chasv is also unhappy, only he doesn't know it--unhappy with who he is. He just turns his unhappiness into resentment against those who are happy.

Chasv,

I know some fellow bloggers will find me crazy for saying this, but I think you need to study how Anonymous approaches this topic in a debate and learn some things from him.

If you click on my name below, iy will take you back a few days to the posting called Lobby Time here on the AT Blogs site. Nonny and I wrangled and wrestled over this subject throughout the day with many others contributing. Nonny puts up a tough, reasoned argument and writes quite well. At the core of his beliefs you sense a religious foundation. I don't remember him stooping to belittling gays or resorting to name-calling in describing them. He just simply states his dislike for their lifestyle, etc.
Your core value seems to be hatred with religion only a wispy veil inelegantly worn to justify the ugly nakedness beneath.
Anyway, do some studying. Check out the posting I mentioned. Learn from the masters.

>My image of Lwood will never be the same...<
zelda,

Aw shucks.
