The politics of disaster response

John Brummett raises the possibility that partisan politics played a role in the Bush administration's decision to devote aid and attention to areas struck by tornadoes in Alabama, while ignoring parts of Arkansas that suffered the same fate.

Alabama is a Republican state. Arkansas is a Democratic state. But this White House wouldn't dare distinguish among human suffering by whether a state was red or blue. Would it?

I'm sure it makes no difference to the Bush White House that David Rainey's district is 57% African-American or that his constituents vote overwhelmingly for Democrats. They know that Tim Griffin can send out letters to residents of Desha County and purge them from the FEMA roles.

Perhaps, but I would direct those who rush to throw the blame on partisan politics from the Administration to take into account the dismal response by FEMA to the blizzard and ice storms that ravaged Oklahoma in mid-January. This week, the solidly Republican state was denied individual assistance by FEMA for its citizens even while Republican and Democratic lawmakers alike hounded the Administration for assistance and continuously expressed outrage. U.S. Sen. Jim Inhofe (R-Okla) has even announced a plan to introduce legislation removing FEMA from the DHS and returning it to its status as an autonomous agency in an attempt to return some semblance of efficiency to an agency which has fallen to shambles. Whatever the case, it is clear that something must be done soon.

As the recent hearing with the 8 fired US prosecutors shows, the Bush administration is a friend to NO ONE. They take extra joy shafting Democrats, minorities, and gays, but in general and 24-7 they are a rogue organization devoted to enriching themselves and their backers only.

Giving aid to victims means less money for Exxon and Halliburton. But when their old Republican butt-buddy Gov. Barber needs a hand, they're right there. Arkansas got the finger when we took on the 2nd largest group of Katrina victims. We got the finger last week after the Dumas storm. We'll get it again next time there is a disaster too.

Arkansas, the home of Bill and Hillary Clinton, Wesley Clark, James Lee Witt and the not Bush-approved Huckabee.......it's no wonder when we held our hand out Bush shit on it. The cancer in DC is spreading and only Congress can turn on the Chemo drip. Indict and Impeach, it's the only hope we have.

See hurricane Katrina.

If those were white country club members standing on top of buildings, help would have arrived sooner.

Morals do not exist for this administration. They are smokescreens, political tools. Politics rules. At the end of the day, it's about power.
