Who wasn't fired?

Paul Krugman writes today that a bigger potential scandal lurks in the ouster of U.S. attorneys over who WASN'T fired -- attorneys who've already used their Justice Department positions as political cudgels. Could Karl Rove have planned still more of the same, and installed such trusted political hitmen as Tim Griffin, for any other purpose? Knowing Karl Rove's evil history, what do you think? Dispel the odor, Tim. Hang it up.

Krugman surmises that the rot goes deeper than the Justice Department.

Before the midterm election, I wrote that what the election was really about could be summed up in two words: subpoena power. Well, the Democrats now have that power, and the hearings on the prosecutor purge look like the shape of things to come.

In the months ahead, we’ll hear a lot about what’s really been going on these past six years. And I predict that we’ll learn about abuses of power that would have made Richard Nixon green with envy.

Today's big news, of course, is that the Bush FBI has broadly abused powers granted it under the Patriot Act to snoop without warrants into the private affairs of American citizens. Corrupt, incompetent and arrogant. The Bush legacy.

Comments

All of Krugman you really need to read is the following paragraph:

"Donald Shields and John Cragan, two professors of communication, have compiled a database of investigations and/or indictments of candidates and elected officials by U.S. attorneys since the Bush administration came to power. Of the 375 cases they identified, 10 involved independents, 67 involved Republicans, and 298 involved Democrats.

The main source of this partisan tilt was a huge disparity in investigations of local politicians, in which Democrats were seven times as likely as Republicans to face Justice Department scrutiny."

Could this be the reason Arkansas's 2 Senators appear to be either silent or backing the wrong horse most of the time? Do the Bush sleeper cell prosecuting attorneys hold something over their heads?

Krugman is right, we're worrying about the 8 who got fired, we need to be worrying about the 86 still in office. Probably still in office because they are willing to carry the Bush dirty water.

We may be walking around as happy as little clams, but unknown to use, we might be riddled with cancer and not know it yet. Nothing in BushWorld happens by accident....nothing.

"...Nothing in BushWorld happens by accident....nothing."

Yet they've managed to frame every incompetent/disastrous decision as just another 'accident' that's mysteriously fallen out of the political sky...no one did whatever it was and everyone gets a medal. The lack of enough troops in Iraq is begrudgingly admitted as a 'misstep' but NO ONE is responsible. (Even Rumsfeld's departure was presented as some sort of retirement party for a revered/successful war hero; rather than as the long overdue replacement of an abject failure.) And, NewOrleans/Katrina is another example. Allegedly it's one of this administration's biggest blunders; yet, and beside Brownie's token head, no one within this administration has suffered any real consequences (in fact, many Republican businesses made a bundle off things like selling trailers for top dollar so they could sit in Hope). But those who've suffered the most are the same poor black people who never liked Bush/Republicans from the get go and who tended to vote Democratic (like those folks in Dumas). So another monkeyboy uh oh yields dire consequences for 'other' side but none for the real culprits (at least no medals...so far).

So which part of the dichotomy is correct? The inept gang of warmongering, dictatorial boobs who couldn't find their own asses when it comes to solving some of the country's most pressing/dire problems. Or, are they a brilliant, savvy gang of political strategists who successfully stole a presidency and then proceeded to dismantle the country's system of checks and balances while instigating Machiavellian-like plans to make their power absolute and unbeatable?

The only power Demos hold is subpeona power. They cannot get required majorities in the Senate to accomplish any thing of significance.
The House Demo's much heralded "First 100 Hours" must be concurred in the Senate where each provision will be amended to death.

Papa Bush warned in Oct '06 of the coming "hearings" just before he had his big Cry Out in Florida cause Jeb couldn't run due to W's failures.

Could the scenario play out again?
I listened to James Dobson Fuck the Family this morn featuring who Dobson called "The Speaker of the House", Newt the Grinch. Newt was selling F-E-A-R, really had it packaged in bright patriotic RED too.
By his telling we are faced with potential ANNILATION on THREE FRONTs. He was shoutin it out buddy, better than a hell-damation preacher from Georgia, The Evil Axis, Chavez has declared war on Bush as per the Grinch, and of course any good fear monger would be remiss if they didn't mention the greatest boogie man of all time, COMMUNISTs in RUSSIA, because Putin was a KGB agent.
No mention that Bush I was head of a secret police-intelligence agency.

If Sponge-Bob hating Dobsons of the U.S. have their way Bush NeoConvicts, ver I will will be followed by ver. II.
Never heard nor seen such idiocy in any nation but I recall we are now ranked 17th in world literacy rates. Brave Dumb World.

Lwood - Funny, just last week the Republicans told us not to worry about the fall in markets triggered by China because they were communists and therefore could just stop further decline in markets. Of course this was spoken as if in complete admiration of that kind of authoritarian power....nothing at all favoring free markets. Not that its an area I know much about but when a Gooper expresses faith in communism something smells quite rotten.

No one ever said the Mafia was very smart. Look at everything written about them, watch Good Fellas or the Sopranos. They've made it by the sheer willingness to do whatever it takes to get what they want.

Those de's and dem's guys stay on top by applying constant pressure, never backing down, never blinking an eye when they do things 90% of us could never do and always looking for the next opportunity to flip something in their direction.

Everything one can say about the Mafia can be said about the Bush administration. Notice the Bush White House Code of Silence. Note Scooter's willingness to take it up the rear for Cheney.

Notice zero deviation from the tragically flawed war plans for Iraq. Look at New Orleans being Disney-fied before our eyes. Dead bodies mean nothing to Cheney....it's about power and money, power and money.

The Bush Mafia has been busy for 7 years inserting their agents ala Tim Griffin into every nook and cranny. Look at the laws that have been quietly cooked in their favor. Look at the signing statements.

Imagine Tony Soprano in Dick Cheney's chair dealing out misery daily for his own gain, to cement his power, to insure he'll never be replaced.

Their iron will and cold bloodymindedness comes at a time when the American people have never cared less. As long as the people and Congress lets them run with the ball.....they're going to run like hell. The Democrat's victory in November didn't phase them. Scooter's conviction didn't phase them. Pelosi and Murtha don't scare them.

I'm not real sure a public uprising will scare them. It may be too late. Like J. Edgar Hoover ignoring the Mafia for 30 years....it just may be too late. If only we could muster the anger and outrage shown yesterday in Brazil towards Bush, we might see a chink in their armor. But talking and blogging and mean sound bites on the evening news bothers them not at all.

We're expecting the milk of human decency to start running in their veins. We're expecting them to honor laws and tradition. The Democrats in Congress are waging an honorable gentleman's battle against alley rats.

Congress and the American people will continue to lose as Bush-Cheney grow stronger as long as we do nothing but expect better out of the White House. Shaming the Mafia into acting better has never worked and it won't work with Bush-Cheney either.

Lwood, Eureka, DBI,

Who would have ever believed Democrats would remember Nixon fondly . . .

>The Democrats in Congress are waging an honorable gentleman's battle against alley rats.<

Well said Death. However don't be too fooled by appearances. Even the Mafia guys know when to cut their losses, clean up the cash flow and go legit. They were never stupid, just survivalists who saw that old White Guys had it all sewn up in NYC, Chicago and other power centers. They just wanted to wet their beaks. For the most part Mafia types only operated on this Continent. Neo-Convicts operate around the world, on several continents (see Smedley Butler).

Neo-Convicts will, like the Mafia morph into other areas. Religion is where the last refuge lies and it seems they will run there until new torch bearers are found and the Corporate takeover of churches is acknowledged for what it is, supression of dissent and wages, and reducing the faithful to tokens with barely enough left to buy the fat-ass soft sofas and feed their gaggle of faith-issued chillin. Bass boat payments will be missed, houses reposessed, and credit cards cancelled.

Science has a way of overcoming even the Great Inquisition as we move ever slowly into Greater Consciousness of our selves and our universe and every living system on Earth. Even once dyed in the Oil Corporate Chiefs are siding with Al Gore meterologists and acknowledging what was known 20 years ago.

Darth Cheney moved most of his retirement funds into Euro-based bonds in Mar of '06. He may not wish to serve their wines but he doesn't want to be part of the Great Decline that's coming.

lwood in the above context i believe the word is pronounced COMMINISTs with an i instead of a u. it is kind of like putting the k in nuclear as our fearless leader does. it gives the speaker a certain ignorance and he doesn't really know why other people are laughing at him.

The love child of Nixon and Satan would not be as evil as our Current Leader.

I miss Dick!
