Drugs and grades at UA

UA Chancellor John White announced today that, indeed, a couple of basketball players had tested positive for marijuana in the course of apparently routine random drug testing done on college athletes.

I don't mean to be flip, but ... College kids? Smoke marijuana? Say it ain't so.

On a more important topic, one-day-wonder Dana Altman apparently said at an Omaha news conference that there was nothing to reports that his concerns about academics among athletes at UA and a rumored inability to bring in an academic advisor were among reasons he decided to stay at Creighton. This is a subject of continuing concern to anyone who thinks a university serves a function beyond providing entertainment for sports fans.

PS -- I see the D-G is reporting that one basketball player is on team suspension for academic reasons. Talk about the soft bigotry of low expectations. I think it has existed for years in the UA athletic department.

If my floor was tested after a weekend, over 50% would test positive.

It's several times more common than cigarettes.

When I was a student at UA, I could hardly wait until I graduated so I could go out and buy a beer. I didn't inhale, though.

ARK. BLOG: Come on, Louie, surely it took you until 25 or so to get the required credits. Didn't I used to see you at the D-Lux?

I remember when a few clowns in my fraternity got their underpants in a wad because "aghast!" people were smokin' pot...

There was a nice "blowback" if you know what I mean...

When I was at the UofA, I PROUDLY "puffed" with the stars of the Nat. Championship team.

In case you didn't know, there is a lot of weed out there!

OVERGROW THE WORLD!

You guys better WISE UP - Alberto is listening, doncha know??!!!

NOW if we could stop all the 'hogwash' and take on a REAL problem - the "War" on drugs...

If these drug tests had been in place earlier, many of our Razorback icons would be tarnished, not to mention suspended for a game or two.

It's long past time to at least decriminalize pot. I favor the legalization, but I'll settle for a fine. College kids are better off smoking pot than tobacco or drinking alcohol to excess.

And did anyone notice when these drug tests were done? Was after spring break. Good grief.

I'm way more concerned about the kid suspended for academic reasons than I am over the two pot smokers.
