Mexican consulate opens

A Mexican consulate opens Wednesday in Little Rock with great ceremony, including expected wackjob protests, Stephens Media notes. This is a great thing. A consulate will make this a more welcoming place for immigrants. The city has been enriched by the flow of workers from Mexico. Without them, I wonder if Little Rock would have enjoyed any growth at all in recent years.

(There, that ought to stir a few people up bright and early.)

Gov. Mike Beebe praises the economic benefits of a consulate, but, darn it, he's got a conflict that will prevent him from actually appearing at the event and participating in the photo ops. That fellow who's lt. gov. will do the honors.

Growth in LR? Perhaps w/o them.

Growth in NWA? Not bloody likely.

We've (non-nut racists) got to figure out a way to stop allowing corporate America from turning us against each other. The average Mexican and the average American have more in common with each other than they do with the elite/wealthy one percent who are running the PR show (and everything else) in each country. Without exception, every Hispanic immigrant I know and know of works harder than my own blood/guts working class family...and that's damn hard! Plus all of us could learn from their cultural love of and loyalty to family. (Though we do need to work on that rampant sexism...we've got enough of our own!) The main difference is that Americans still believe they have a right to a fair wage for a fair day's work...a right to a living wage and crazy things like healthcare. (And we'd prefer not to have to stand on the street corner waiting for job crumbs from the boss man.) On the other side of the fence, most immigrants are so desperate they'll do anything for their corporate masters so that their children can eat...just as we would. But frankly...I see middle-class America slipping back towards the other side of the fence rather than most immigrants moving to our side of the working fence.

I met the Mexican consular the other day. Nice guy.

I'm way past elated to be rid of the Huckster - but I'm getting a baaad feeling about Beebe. You know the feeling? - the one you get when you open a box of fishbait and first see the spineless worms.

If the rest of his term is like this, I wouldn't mind at all for him to be a one termer.

REALITY CHECK! Afiew years back, were not the Chamber and City Hall taken in by some con artists claiming to be emissaries from latin america looking to open an office here? Let's check that seal on teh ambassador'd credentials upon presentation in the Court of St. Petite Roche.

Well, Tulsa should be relieved. Instead of making the necessary trip to Ok they can trot over to Little Rock where a thriving business in legal and and fake "papers" will shortly take off.

White America has nothing on it's minds but getting an education so they will not have to work! It takes an ignorant uneducated person to do the work for these educated Americans and that's where the mexs come in.

Work to our citizens is not their goal in life. Being rich and laid back is the thing they desire and it's going that way thanks to be living in the richest country.

Well, White people are lazy being their own greatest enemy. White people will sell their souls to the devil in order to be rich and laid back.

I must say, chasv, that's an interesting take on things.

Charlie, you can now go back and tell your movement leader that you told'em how it is.

I agree with hugh...that's interesting take on things chasv. I'd respond in detail...but I'm still trying to digest it all and it's not going down too well.

oops

Max, LR's growth hasn't really been driven that much by Hispanics, not like NWA. In fact LR's Hispanic populations is less than the 4.3% of Arkansas as a whole. Maybe the consulate will help change this. I, for one, don't see a decent-sized Hispanic minority in LR as a bad thing. I think will add a little cultural flair the area needs.

ARK. BLOG: There's been huge growth in Hispanic population in LR, if not as large as NWA. Such as LR has grown at all -- and it's largely been static for a decade or so -- a chunk of it can be attributed to that growth. The most telling indicator is the measurable Hispanic population in LR public schools today. If I didn't make it clear before, I welcome this development with open arms.

Well with any luck this will once and for all make El Pour The Salt On change their recipes or close down for good.

(if they are indeed still open now)

I have to agree with Max and others that the influx of Hispanics has been good for Little Rock. More cultural diversity is a good thing, and the growth in Hispanic immigrants brings a variety of cultures --- from Central America and South America as well as from Mexico. We may even be able to grow a world-class field goal kicker for the Razorbacks from among the many soccer players moving here.

Oh Dios! Ms. Brewer has just bought a copy of Hateful Spanish EMail for Dummies! Just waiting for that hispanic field goal specialist.

Both legal and illegal immigrants, I suppose?

Will there be a drive by turn-in in the parking lot to hire illegals for cheap day labor?
