Packing heat -- UPDATE II

Mike Huckabee's son, David, 26, was arrested at the Little Rock National Airport about 5:30 a.m. this morning for having a handgun in carry-on luggage while preparing to board a plane. The gun was found during routine security screening.

"It was a mistake," said police Lt. Terry Hastings. "It happens all the time. He just forgot he had it." He said airport security said such forgetfulness occurs three or four times a year at the airport.

A friend quotes David as saying it was a "stupid, stupid mistake." Young Huckabee, who travels in the mortgage business, often carries a gun with him on the road. He usually travels by car, but told a friend that he threw his computer case (and gun) in a bag when he got up at 4:30 a.m. for an early morning flight and simply forgot about the gun.

Huckabee was arrested and taken for a short period to a North Little Rock holding facility. He then appeared before District Judge Lee Munson and pleaded guilty to having a gun in a prohibited place, a misdemeanor. He was sentenced to a year in jail, suspended, and one year of supervised probation. He was ordered to perform 10 days of community service (he can pay $100 and avoid work duty) and assessed $605 855 in fine and costs. After the court appearance, he went through processing at the County Jail and was released.

Huckabee has told friends he plans to do his community service rather than pay $100 to avoid it. And we're provided this comment he sent to a friend by e-mail:

" I screwed up and made a stupid mistake. I forgot my gun was in my computer bag, which was careless, and now I have to deal with the consequences. I am the only one who made the mistake and the only one who can make sure that I do everything the court requires me to do for my punishment. The privilege to carry my gun is only there as long as I also accept the responsibilities that come with it."

Hastings said Huckabee has a concealed weapon permit and was carrying a Glock .40-caliber loaded with eight rounds.

From the police report of the  officer called to look at the  carry-on bag by an X-ray operator: "I removed the bag and asked Mr. Huckabee if he knew what he had in the bag. He replied he did now."

Police confiscated the gun and a clip with an additional nine rounds. A court spokesman said Huckabee could petition for return of the gun after the 30-day appeal period on the conviction had expired.

UPDATE: A letter is being drafted providing for the immediate suspension of Huckabee's concealed carry permit, as the law provides. It's unclear at this moment when he can apply to have the suspension lifted.

UPDATE II: Former Gov. Mike Huckabee, currently running for president, issued this statement on the incident:

"I love my son but what he did was irresponsible, but not intentional. The right to carry a firearm has to be balanced with an equal responsibility to not make foolish errors like forgetting about it being in one's briefcase. He was treated courteously and professionally but received no special treatment and he shouldn't have.

"David has to accept full responsibility and the consequences of his actions as any other adult -- and he is doing that.  I make no excuses for him and would expect him to accept whatever penalties are given. It is the court's responsibility to properly consequence him for a foolish act but his family's responsibility to love him and temper our disappointment with our support.”

I know that Huck and the Republicans are desperate, but his son will need to find another way to get support for his daddy! :)

(This has nothing to do with my general dislike of his father).

Anyone who has forgotten he has a loaded gun isn't adequately responsibile to legally carry one.

Wow, that's really something to be proud of, David, you're a real tough guy packing a .40 cal. Glock. But, Mike, are you even a little concerned about this kid's a) confessed memory lap, or b) falsehood? Can we ban him from college campuses? Forget you're carrying a Glock? Yeah, right. It's probably Mike's plan for locking up the NRA vote.

Not even a Huckabee would think he could take his gun through airport security. Obviously, he did forget he had it. Nobody would intentionally go through what he was put through.

But it's still amazing. As much time as I spend worrying about whether my lip balm is OK to carry on, I can't imagine somebody having a gun in a carry on and not even thinking about it as they approach the scanners.

Hughman hit the nail on head. With a memory like that one should not be carrying a gun.

But at least all the people at the airport were safer even though they would have never known it.

"if someone comes close to my powdered doughnuts, I will have to pop a cap" -David Huckabee 4/26/07

If he's the same Huckabee boy that tortured and killed the dog at Scout camp, then we all really have something to worry about.

Excuse the abort MAX you may want to pick up this one:

Supreme Court Rules TIF's Can't Take School Money

_

Mercy! I bet the folks on that plane would have felt much safer knowing donut boy/ dog killer was on Board and armed!

Ain't this the same ol' boy who got into trouble with the Law a few years back for beating up on little beagle dogs?

Some may try to blame it on his raisin', but it's hard to put it all on Mama and Daddy when Junior is just et slam up with the dumb-ass.

Hopefully he'll be a little wiser from the experience to go along with being a lot lighter in the pocketbook... and he can certainly kiss his concealed carry permit good bye as of this morning. And having started (or re-started, depending on the thing with the beagle dogs) his criminal records, it'll be hard to get another one.

That is the same Huckabee son who was fired after the infamous dog demise at Scout camp.

Maybe he was headed somewhere to defend some college students?

""It happens all the time. He just forgot he had it." He said airport security said such forgetfulness occurs three or four times a year at the airport."

I guess consistency didn't clock in this morning over at the police department.

happens all the time = 3 or 4 times a year

hmmmm......

He was never charged in the dog incident because the dog was already dead when he got ahold of it.

where can i get more info on the dog incident?

"He was never charged in the dog incident because the dog was already dead when he got ahold of it."

Oh. Okay then. But why did he need to get ahold of it in the first place?

It would be interesting to track this for a while to see if any special request are made to waive the court cost or get this double secret probation mark off his permanent record.

Ya'll, please tell me because I am gun-ignorant.

What do you use a gun like that, a Glock for?

Aside from...well, you know.

"Ya'll, please tell me because I am gun-ignorant.

What do you use a gun like that, a Glock for?"

It makes you pecker look bigger.

"What do you use a gun like that, a Glock for?"

Well, to pop a cap in somebody's ass and if you looked at David Huckabee lately, you'd understand that for his ass her would need at least 8 caps.

The link is to a picture of a Glock .40. Who knows if it's the same model David Huckabee packed.

These can be used for a variety of reasons: killing various varmints, holding up Seven-11s (thereby raising campaign funds), protecting commercial flights from real terrorists, and so forth.

Could be a shot in the arm for the Huckabee presidential campaign.

Here's a link re David Huckabee's killing and maiming of a dog: http://www.utopiarescue.com/oldsite/stop_animal_torture.htm

The boy's a real pistol. A chip off the ol' Glock.

"Could be a shot in the arm for the Huckabee presidential campaign."

Given the current national sentiment over the recent little uproar in Virgiania, it's more likely a kick in t' other end.

L'il Davy probably still has a bright future with the Farm Bureau, though, lobbying against animal cruelty legislation...

gracias opra

Maybe he was fixin to take Mormon Mitt hunting? I've never been a governor's son. Maybe he feels like he's in some kind of danger. I've also never wanted a gun carrying permit because I think I'd pass out if I tried to walk around with a gun in my coat.

I got a house full of guns passed on by dead relatives. I keep one pistol loaded at all times in case someone tries to get in my wife's underwear drawer at 3 am. But fortunately have never had to use it.

About every 20 years or so I take it out and fire it just to see if it still works and I know which end to point away from me. Every damn time I wind up scaring myself.

I never can remember if there is a bullet in the chamber after I take out the clip. 2 times now I've managed to shoot off an unloaded gun....easy to see how kids accidentally shoot their playmate horsing around with Dad's gun.

Someday they'll make a bad movie about the Huckabuck family and it'll go straight to Showtime. It takes a little bit of an ego to think you're important enough for someone to shoot....don't ya think?

So he tortured a dead dog or did his accomplice kill the dog before young Huck got hold of it? Regardless, I can't stomack anyone who has the ability to torture an animal...human or not. It tells me everything I want to know about them and their internal workings. And there's definitely a defective gene somewhere in that twisted pool. (Serial killers seem to always start with the animals.)

What I can't believe is that Terry Hastings is referring to this as a "mistake". Doesn't that minimize the whole issue? Why would the spokesman for LRPD characterize this as a "mistake"? HE BROKE THE LAW! IT WAS A VIOLATION OF THE LAW!

And...so...he works in the mortgage business...since when can you take a gun into a bank? What's up with that?

Think Dave Elswick is braggin on how well trained the conceal and carry folks are now? Guess young David's training didn't take. Sheriff Andy....where's my bullet?

he has now made the top of the page at raw story with what looks like a mug shot. i hope his parents are proud. actually they probably are. piglet is probably beaming.

"What I can't believe is that Terry Hastings is referring to this as a "mistake". Doesn't that minimize the whole issue? Why would the spokesman for LRPD characterize this as a "mistake"? HE BROKE THE LAW! IT WAS A VIOLATION OF THE LAW!"

>>Several have remarked wondering how in the name o' Jesus you could forget you had a pistol in your bag.

Terry Hastings said it was a mistake. How the hell does he know? Happens all the time?! There are 365 days in a year, and the 3 or 4 times is "all the time?" WTF!!??

What if it WASN'T a mistake? What if he fully intended, for whatever reason, to carry that damn thing on the plane? Can anyone prove otherwise?

I wonder if he'll be fired from his job? And another thing: why isn't his ass in Iraq if he wants to shoot a gun so bad?

"a Glock .40-caliber loaded with eight rounds."

Is this the same type of weapon used by Cho at VTU?

"It is the court's responsibility to properly consequence him for a foolish act"

Properly consequence? Shades of "is our children learning." This from the man who claims to have done more for education in Arkansas than Clinton. Lordy.

That NY Times reporter in town hit the mother lode of material.

>I wonder if he'll be fired from his job? And another thing: why isn't his ass in Iraq if he wants to shoot a gun so bad?<

Other than being a standard Repub chicken hawk who can say other than that the military does have minimum physical requirements...and mental ones too.
_

"And another thing: why isn't his ass in Iraq if he wants to shoot a gun so bad?"

Because the military does have some sort of cap on how big your ass can be.

As Rodney Dangerfield memorably put it in the 1980s cult classic movie "Back to School":

"Are you pleasantly plump?

A little on the hefty side?

When you go jogging, do you leave potholes?

When you make love, do you have to give directions?

At the zoo, do the elephants throw YOU peanuts?

Do you look a menu and say, 'OK'?

Are you FAT?"

"It is the court's responsibility to properly consequence him..."

No matter, Huckabee will be a man of no consequence soon enough.

Click on my name for David Huckabee's mug shot.

And ANOTHER THING, by God!

This gives a whole new perspective to Huck's book:

"KIDS WHO KILL"

Arkie life sure is strange...

For being liberal's some you sure make dick cheney look like a saint.

You cityboys have got this all wrong. He has a concealed BEAGLE permit, not concealed HANDGUN permit. When Beagles are outlawed only inbreds will have Beagles. Me and Charleston Heston agree on that!
I think it's high time we named a lake or a shooting range or something after this fine example of Republican manhood.

Lt. Terry Hastings is a stooge

I dont understand any links at all between being in the mortgage bidness and carrying a Glock, sorry. Is it really that treacherous these days?

ARK. BLOG: I didn't mean to suggest linkage. That just happens to be his business, packaging mortgage loans. But he does a fair amount of travel by car in his work.

Tina,

Loan processors can be quite persnickety at times. You never know when they might take it out on a co-worker or client.

As the young Huckabee learned in Boy Scouts so many years ago, one should always be prepared.

Reckon he bought that gun or was it a gift? Any paperwork to be scrounged up on that?

"Haw haw! That boy's fat!"

Honestly, can't you people come up with anything better to say about the Huckabee kids?

Can anyone say "Barry Switzer" - He did the same thang a few yrs back...Nothing happened..Im no Huck fan (anyofthem, mom-dad-the boys) so I will hold comment...I am a Terry Hastings fan, though..He is a good guy, good cop, elder in his church, etc...People do forget - ask Switzer...David is not the Huck I wish would go away - its his daddy....

"For being liberal's some you sure make dick cheney look like a saint."

Look! A 20%r!

But he may have a Glock...

----

Umm, no. Can you?

Oh, well, what about his eyebrows? He's got his daddy's, it seems. At least we can tell who his daddy is.

That's good, right?

"For being liberal's some you sure make dick cheney look like a saint." Posted by: wideopen

With all due respect, wideopen, please finish this quote: "For being liberal's..."

For being liberal's what?

I know conservatives are famously more literate than liberals, so please fill in the blank.

Thanks.

It's true...us liberals are quite special; but NO amount of hocus pocus, voodoo, exorcisms or incantations could make Cheney look like a saint.

The goober tortures a dog and tries to fly with a loaded gun in his suitcase...but it's all about liberals. That's pitiful widewhatever...just pitiful.

HOW does a person FORGET a LOADED GUN?

If a person can forget they have it, and where it is, they are a danger to everyone around them. What if they just happened to ask a kid (or anyone else for that matter) to get their bag for them and the gun went off? Or the kid messed around and got it out? I'm sure others can come up with other scenarios.

I am still astonished. How does one FORGET they have a loaded gun?

This is insane!

Where was he exactly? Boarding a private or commercial airline? If it was private and he had a carry and conceal permit, did that lessen the severity of the "Mistake"?
I want to know if in fact there have only been three or four "mistakes" by others in the last year and if they received the same treatment?

--------
Aside from that childs play we are a lot better off today with our Senator Pryor voting with every single Democrat to set limits to the Iraqi occupation.. This had to be a difficult decision and I want to thank him as well as Senator Lincoln.

Has anyone else ever heard of someone being arrested, charged, entering a plea, and being sentenced ALL IN THE SAME DAY?
How can anyone represent that he didn't receive special treatment?

My sincere thanks to Up The Road for the funniest comment I've read in a long time:

"Some may try to blame it on his raisin', but it's hard to put it all on Mama and Daddy when Junior is just et slam up with the dumb-ass."

Hilarious!

No, the dog was NOT "already dead when he got ahold of it." The dog was captured, tortured (hung, stoned, throat slit) for some time before he died.

This was huge news and the source of considerable outrage in "doggy" circles (it made the rounds of both rescue groups and the show folks) at the time it happened, and many of us wrote letters to then-Gov. Huck.

The main concern was that in every known case of men who become serial killers, they started out, usually as children or teens, torturing and killing animals.

My letter to Huck was not harsh, not demanding justice or questioning why the boy was not charged with cruelty (a misdemeanor in this state, but still a crime)...I merely suggested that for the boy's own good, perhaps a psychiatric evaulation and some therapy were in order.

An 18-year old boy does not capriciously torture and kill a dog if everything's "OK" inside.

You can guess what response my letter got. If you guess "NONE," then you know Huckabee. Not even a note from a staffer with a form response.

Next time I get pulled over for speeding I'll just tell the officer that I forgot I was in a car. I'm sure the LRPD will just consider it a mistake. No harm, no foul.

>>>>Honestly, can't you people come up with anything better to say about the Huckabee kids?<<<<

They are not KIDS they are adults.
ADULTS.

And he should have been charged for the dog torture when he was 17 or 18...that is not a "kid" either, but someone old enough to know better.

The comments posted here just show that liberals are compassionate and full of love until you stick a conservative in front of them, then they reveal their true colors!

The comments here demonstrate that liberals have little tolerance for animal abuse or for 'special' people getting 'special' treatment under the law.

On the other hand, Huckabuck defenders have demonstrated over and over that all facts can be reduced to a blanket attack on liberals.

"The comments posted here just show that liberals are compassionate and full of love until you stick a conservative in front of them, then they reveal their true colors!" Posted by: ARParrothead

Just show me a liberal who inadvertently strings up a dog , stones it, and slits its throat, and then 8 years later inadvertently carries a loaded pistol into a commercial airport, and I will be first in line to criticize.

Any-Mous: Yes, 17 or 18 IS "old enough to know better." But you know what? I just asked my FOUR YEAR OLD daughter a few basic questions, and suprise of surprises, SHE knows it's wrong to hurt animals. Wonder how old Dave was when/IF he clued in to that fact? And if he reached adulthood without knowing that was wrong, who could assume he's reached 26 knowing any better about ANYTHING?

Take a good look at that pic, guys. Imagine him getting slopped at a state dinner in the White House with John Mark and Janet. Soooooiiiieeee! Just keep your hands and feet away from his mouth.

I always like to come back (late) to a thread like this one. There's usually something funny like the 08:12 pm post.

Damn dogtownius...that mental picture even makes President shit for brains look good. And me ready for a drink!

Boy, isn't he attractive?

You know, this might not be too bad of a move for Huckabee. This will certainly turn the heads of NRA redneck freaks and make them lean towards him in the primary. To win the Repug vote, you need the NRA vote.
