« BREAKING: LR school meet delayed -- UPDATED | Main | LRSD in crisis »

Slowly they turn

I've been reluctant to push down the LR school discussion because it's the dominant news of our city again today. But a friend passes along a column from Joe Klein, part of the Beltway media herd that has, for better than seven years now, denigrated Al Gore and other Democrats and sycophantically played up to the "daddy" administration and the swaggering fake cowboy, George Bush.

The worm, and I do mean worm, has turned. Musing on the disastrous war, the scandalous treatment of injured military and the runaway takeover of government in the attorney purge, he concludes:

When Bush came to office--installed by the Supreme Court after receiving fewer votes than Al Gore--I speculated that the new President would have to govern in a bipartisan manner to be successful. He chose the opposite path, and his hyper-partisanship has proved to be a travesty of governance and a comprehensive failure. I've tried to be respectful of the man and the office, but the three defining sins of the Bush Administration--arrogance, incompetence, cynicism--are congenital: they're part of his personality. They're not likely to change. And it is increasingly difficult to imagine yet another two years of slow bleed with a leader so clearly unfit to lead.

Welcome to our nightmare, Joe.

As much as I want to believe a lot of these 'Bogus POTUS' Enablers have, at long last, gotten a bellyful of George W. Bush and his gang of political power hungry liars, I wonder if they are really convinced or just wavering on the winds of self-interest.

Do Klein and others really believe Bush is a bad as he is or have they realized that either: 1) Rove is losing the power to attack and punish them as the Bush administration melts like the Wicked Witch of the West under the scrutiny of oversight; or 2) The Bush administration can not reward them with privilege, readers and access anymore and they have to find new patrons to support their pundit pornography.

Remember these late converts in the future, they may be just as enthusiastic over the next 'goebbeled' figurehead clueless of how to do the job or even what th job is.

right on doc,

"Harold Ickes, White Courtesy Phone... paging Mr. Harold Ickes" ....

....inch by inch.....step by step.

What strikes me about the clip from the article is that the "sins" he cites aren't "new". GWB and team have BEEN arrogant, incompetent and cynical for years. Molly Ivins tried to tell us he was like that in Texas and no one wanted to listen. I'm glad Klein and other former supporters are finally "getting it", but HELLO!

Bush Sucks! That can not be overated. He has set our country back 20 years, not just in what he has done, but, by what he has failed to do.

Unfortunately, hasn't it really gotten to the point that all politicians suck. It is just a matter of degree. Senators, by and large, are so bought and paid for that they are a joke. Why do we call it public service? That's the all time joke in this day and age.

They (all politicians) let lobbyists write legislation, corporate shills dictate policy, short term interests rule over long term strategy. We have within our system, the way it is now, the seeds of our own destruction.

There is a glimmer of hope in that Obama raised over 90% of his 25 million with contributions that were $100.00 or less. That is amazing. Hillary is already bought and paid for. She's too beholden to too many. Her fundraising is corporate and special interest. She's the same old same old, been there done that. And really, aren't we all Clintoned out. Sorry but it is true IMO.

Does Barack have a shot? Who knows. But it sure would be nice to get someone elected who actually views the job in terms of what is good for the country and leads. Will he turn into the same old same old. Maybe, probably even, but for now he looks like he may be different.

I'd love to see someone run who has a platform that simpy states "I'm not going to make short term decisions and sell out our country just to get re-elected. I'm not going to play that game. I'm going to set an agenda and try to do what is right for our country and, all of us, not just some of us. And I'm not going to let my own party dicate those things that I think the American people think are wrong.

I'll let the American people decide in 4 years if they think I'm leading on their behalf. And I won't govern based on fundriaising goals and needs. I think I can win with less money but more support of the American people."

Why is that not something we hear. I think you can win with that message in 2008.

Ideally we need a non-politican to lead at this point. Soneone who comes from the private sector. But that won't happen. Who would open themselves to the sillyness that our campaign process has degenerated into?

But that is another story.

Wonder if "Anonymous" has another book in the works?

I'm not a big Joe Klein fan, but at least he got it right in this article. One thing he left out in his Bush bashing, crookedness. A child could connect the dots between Cheney and Halliburton, so why didn't Klein use it to add a forth condemnation of the Bush administration?

He also left out the wacky religious crap that has been another leg holding up the Bush mess. We're not hearing Bush say much about his "higher father" these days. I figure they've dropped that ruse because it's not working for them any more. However, the money is still raining on his faith based programs, bet those folks are still beating the Bush drum.

Klein is right about the slow bleed business...it's April and Bush, Cheney, and Rove are still in the White House. While I applaud the methodical method employed by the top Democrats, get a move on I say!

Everyday more of our kids come home in a box, filthy Walter Reed gets fuller and Bush makes more enemies we'll have to deal with after he's gone. 2 more years of Bush is like ignoring a fast growing cancer for 2 years.....we won't survive it. Wrong Way Bush has to go!

BUSH/ Cheney is the proof that all the GOP/Republican's have to offer America is lies.

NIAGARA FALLS!

Let's face it kids. We're stuck with the guy for another two years. I've been bitching about him since 2000, when I was merely amused with the prospect that so many Americans chose to vote for the "dumb guy" rather than the "dull guy". But bitching is really all we can do, because this Congress we were all so happy to get ain't gonna do a damn thing about him. (To see what I think about them, if you care, click on my name).
SHIRLEY we'll get a Democrat Prez when the next opportunity rolls around. But she'll inherit the disdain the rest of the world holds for the good ol' USA - and that the US citizens hold for their own gov'ment. Willl we be patient enough to give her time to straighten it all out? Or will we chunk her after her first term and bring back another of these dictators? Who the hell knows? To me, Canada isn't looking as cold as it used to. Must be global warming.

What a bunch of sad sacks. If we spent enough time, we could come up with a similar list of "problems" for every president. This just illustrates the actual hyper-partisanship of your side. You throw that word around like it's one-sided.

Y'all get more hysterical every day. I love it. Thanks for the pick me up.

Feel free to write all kinds of responses. Unfortunately, I probably won't be able to respond again, today.

Have fun agreeing with each other. I know your neurosis demands group therapy.

should we concentrate on getting bush out or should we try to just end the damn war. i think we have a better chance to end the war. even the rethuglicans are tired or seeing the kids coming home dead. they are not loyal enough to the country these days to actually vote what needs to be done and actually vote against bush on impeachment. in nixon's time they told him they were against him and it was time for him to resign or they would impeach him. today they will vote rethuglican no matter what. the loyalty is to the party instead of the country. we saw that in the foley situation when they went to the political people instead of doing the right thing. they were concerned about taking care of the party.

we have a chance, with the attitude of the country to force the president to end this war. just like pryor voted against a timeline and immediately got protests and then a couple of days voted for it i think the rethuglicans can be forced to do the same thing. the people of the country are sick of this war and this attitude can be forced on the house and senate. the white house will eventually learn that this is not a monarchy.

I popped in last night ready to share the link to this story and found myself knee deep in a whole different mud puddle.

Max is getting close when he starts digging in compost looking for a word that best describes JK. I really don't know if such a critter has a name in nature so I am left with a combination of fictional mutants Grima-gollum Joe Klein.

He is nothing short of an idiot.. Of course much of what he says is finally correct but he fails to come to the conclusion that has been staring him in the face for so long by using this little statement in the
http://www.time-blog.com/swampland/
to point out his story...
he says
------
n which the author has a few things to say about the Bush Administration.

NO! I am not hinting at impeachment. There are no "high crimes" here. Just a really bad presidency. In fact, I consider impeachment talk counterproductive and slightly nutso.
-----------------

This is where I don't understand the worm most of all.. George Buswh is at best a globally dangerous war criminal.. and if we have any self respect, any basic belief in our constitution and the treaties attached to it.. we must pursue the trail of facts to an end. We must show as many of our citizens what the truth is with hearings and a series of trials from the halls of congress to the Hague.. The world is watching and most already understand this far more than the american public..

Joe Klein is a troll, scared of his own shadow, incapable of making a decision on his own or confronting demons.. If he is saying it his mother or some fellow like Joe Leiberman must have told him it was alright to do so. So as a weather vane his story is telling in that respect..

Zonker - Sorry mam, I beg to differ.. I impeachment were on the table actively with hearings providing sunlight to much of what I suggested above (war crimes). He would be much lass capable of continued sending untrained new recruits or already wounded soldiers back into Iraq. The joint Cheifs and other generals would have a much larger ability to decline following orders for an attack on Iran.. this neo cabal; means to due far more than they already have.. google the PNAC manifesto.. read the signitories (starting with Cheney) and what their plan has been for a long time.

We fail to confront these demons at all our peril.

What was it Benjamin Franklin said?? Those who give up liberty for security deserve neither.

Sorry, clicked post first, not preview.

What kind of person makes it his daily obligation to defend criminals like the Bush administration? How can nony be watching the same movie and seeing something so bizarrely different from the rest of us?

How can nony defend torturers and killers? Has Fox News scared him so bad that he'll take up with killers in hopes of being defended when the phantom hordes come to visit?

He should be worrying about the growing number of people all around the world that have begun to hate the US thanks to our crooked President. I think if the bombs ever start falling it will come from people who once were our friends.

What a sad day it will be for nony if he ever wakes up and sees he's been wrong from the start. What excuse will he make if our modern Adolph & Eva are one day found...suicides in the bunker under the White House?

"Feel free to write all kinds of responses. Unfortunately, I probably won't be able to respond again, today."

No response. I just can't help wondering what somebody like Anon is doing when he isn't on here taking up for the worst administration in the history of the USA. Any guesses?

DBI and RB,

I had a thought about that not too long ago.

I seem to remember 'the nonmous' rapaciously attacking DBI for daring to imply 'Dim Son' was like Hitler, since 'Dim Son' only eliminated posse comitatus, habeas corpus, due process, requiring warrants for invasion of private information and endorsing torture as a United States of America tactic to gather intelligence. But didn't send the combatants and homosexuals to death in Guantanamo 'Gas Chamber Crematoria" in the millions.

My thought was "Who is more guilty of the Bush Administration resembling the Third Reich? Bush, or the enablers that placed him there and roundly refused to believe anything, but the administration's latest 'Talking Lies' and who support Rove's most tenuous fallacies vociferously?

I'll be interested in the responses from everyone, but particularly from the "loyal Bushies."

My guess...ripping the heads off of small animals.

Ten Reasons to Impeach George Bush and Dick Cheney

1. Violating the United Nations Charter by launching an illegal "War of Aggression" against Iraq without cause, using fraud to sell the war to Congress and the public, misusing government funds to begin bombing without Congressional authorization, and subjecting our military personnel to unnecessary harm, debilitating injuries, and deaths.

2. Violating U.S. and international law by authorizing the torture of thousands of captives, resulting in dozens of deaths, and keeping prisoners hidden from the International Committee of the Red Cross.

3. Violating the Constitution by arbitrarily detaining Americans, legal residents, and non-Americans, without due process, without charge, and without access to counsel.

4. Violating the Geneva Conventions by targeting civilians, journalists, hospitals, and ambulances, and using illegal weapons, including white phosphorous, depleted uranium, and a new type of napalm.

5. Violating U.S. law and the Constitution through widespread wiretapping of the phone calls and emails of Americans without a warrant.

6. Violating the Constitution by using "signing statements" to defy hundreds of laws passed by Congress.

7. Violating U.S. and state law by obstructing honest elections in 2000, 2002, 2004, and 2006.

8. Violating U.S. law by using paid propaganda and disinformation, selectively and misleadingly leaking classified information, and exposing the identity of a covert CIA operative working on sensitive WMD proliferation for political retribution.

9. Subverting the Constitution and abusing Presidential power by asserting a "Unitary Executive Theory" giving unlimited powers to the President, by obstructing efforts by Congress and the Courts to review and restrict Presidential actions, and by promoting and signing legislation negating the Bill of Rights and the Writ of Habeas Corpus.

10. Gross negligence in failing to assist New Orleans residents after Hurricane Katrina, in ignoring urgent warnings of an Al Qaeda attack prior to Sept. 11, 2001, and in increasing air pollution causing global warming.

Annoymouse, nony, etc obviously is a connection at a Huckabuck site or Pelley-Family Council. Note the wide variance in posts, grammar, and syntax. It's either different people posting from one base or we have a genuine case of another mpd which does surprise me in the least. MONICA GOODLING RESIGNS
By DAVID STOUT

WASHINGTON, April 6 - Monica Goodling, the Justice Department official who helped coordinate the firings of eight United States attorneys, an episode that has jeopardized the position of Attorney General Alberto R. Gonzales, resigned today.

Ms. Goodling, who has been on leave from her post as the Justice Department's liaison to the White House, told Mr. Gonzales of her decision in a terse letter, a department official said

"May God bless you richly as you continue your service to America," Ms. Goodling wrote in her resignation letter to Mr. Gonzales, according to The Associated Press.

Democrats had hoped that Ms. Goodling would provide details about the role of Karl Rove, the chief political adviser to President Bush, in the firings of the prosecutors. After refusing to testify, she also declined a Democratic invitation to answer questions in a private interview.
NYT

Will new Monica go "Vince Foster" herself? Will God richly bless Alberto "The Torturer" Gonzales as he's blessed Mike Huckabee? Will Gonzo come up with a swollen PAC too?

So many questions go unanswered. And now another pesky weekend to temporarily stop the wheels of progress and investigation.

will Vernon Jordan help find Monica a job? oops.. 90's flashback, sorry... this is the Monica who won't open her mouth.

it will be telling to see where she goes to work next(brownies included)

i figure in Texas at a law firm or for Hagee/Dobson/Falwell... or whatever scam Barbara Comstock is running now (Free Scooter Foundation?) or maybe Mitt, Rudy, Fred, or Mac's campaign?

well, it is Good Friday, somebody had to be sacrificed

eureka first i hope the m was a misprint as i are a dude. just like the original of my namesake and hero zonker harris. next i do believe bush has committed a number of high crimes and a lot more misdemeanors. i just think we do not have enough rethuglican statesmen in the senate to get us to the 2/3 vote.to do that they would have to be honorable and actually vote their concience and go with the evidence instead of going with their party no matter what. well now to watch tv thru bill mahr. se ya'll at 10:50.

"MINNEAPOLIS -- It's a major shakeup at the offices of new U.S. Attorney Rachel Paulose. Four of her top staff voluntarily demoted themselves Thursday, fed up with Paulose, who, after just months on the job, has earned a reputation for quoting Bible verses and dressing down underlings. . . "

The management efficiency of Gonzales and the White House MBA at work.

Hey Zonker Sir,
Not sure where the mam occurred to me, sorry 'bout that.

Well just because it might not work doesn't mean we shouldn't do what is not only right but imperative. The facts at hand demand action via impeachment and war crimes trials.. I think if the facts were laid out in front of the public as well as the republicans in congress they would have to act accordingly.

Hearings would also place a shorter leash on the knee jerk war mongers in the office of the VP in particular because the facts implicate both offices in the white house.. jmho

If it doesn't work, well then, most of the citizens will know once and for all what we are dealing with. That is equally important to holding these criminals accountable.

Eureka,

i agree, for if W's and Cheney's conduct "does not rise to the level", then whatinthehell would ?
