The Hispanic influx

The Winthrop Rockefeller Foundation reported today that the Hispanic population in Arkansas grew 48 percent between 2000 and 2005, the largest percentage growth in the country.

It's about jobs. Between 2000 and 2005, there was no growth in native-born population in Arkansas, but Arkansas tied for fourth in foreign-born growth rate at 37 percent. The number of native workers in manufacturing dropped 9,000, while the number of immigrant workers grew by 12,000.

The immigrants (about half undocumented) earned about $2.7 billion after taxes in 2004, most spent right here. Beats a windmill blade plant all hollow.

Gosh, sounds like this is good for the state. Of course, if I scanned the 30 page report correctly, after assuming this and that, and all the othjer disclaimers, they (whether legal or illegal) MIGHT have contributed $20 million more to our community than they cost us.

I'm kind of impressed that the report could surmise there COULD have been a plus benefit of $20 million. A long way from $2.7 billion they took out.

Its all Greek to me. I figure that figures lie and liars figure so I can't figure this out cause if I figure it out that makes me a liar too.

The last time our local rag mentioned a story on immigrant labor and money it was the amount being sent to Mexico/So. America. Seems Springdale alone was responsible for over $12 million being sent back home. That was at least 4 years ago.

Which brings us to another reason government officials don't plan to hinder the influx...it takes the place of foreign aid.

Ya know...unless those Mexicans are eating that cash and shitting it in the morning it's being spent somewhere.

Sure some of it is going back to Mexico via Western Union, but that cash is going to good use there too. Think how far a hundred bucks must go down there. Plus that money going to Mexico is keeping other Mexicans from coming up here. So it's a win win!

I'll be happy with the money they've added to the economy, I'm happy with my new roof put on by Mexican hands. I'm happy with my neighbors and their cute little kids. I'm happy when they trade in their old beater in on a new Chevy truck though my truck was made in 1988.

I like it when I see one of their Mexican "coming out" parties out at the mall. They do something for their girls when they turn 15. I don't know much about it but they dress up like it's a wedding and the honored girl and her court arrive in a limo. Sure took a lot of chicken gutting to pay for that ya know.

They're a proud people and if we didn't have our white noses so far in the air we'd notice they have age-old customs and traditions that they honor like a priest and his cup of wine. There's more to them than you think and they're not near as bad as you think.

In 25 years they'll be a new bunch of people to piss on and by then a lot of the Mexicans you're giving the evil eye to now will be a part of the middle class. That is unless George Bush kills the middle class.

Quit worrying about Mexicans and start worrying about white Christian men who are on the verge of making all of us their bitch.

A paper published by a think tank last month warned that Sen. Blanche Lincoln's ascendancy to the Agriculture Committee chairmanship was a bad omen for passage of climate-change legislation in 2010 due to her close ties to agricultural producers and processors seen as major contributors of greenhouse gases. /more/
