Uh huh -- ginger ale

From NY Times:

CBS Sports is refusing to show a commercial for Maxfli, the golf ball maker, in which John Daly, whose fondness for alcohol is well known, drives a golf cart on a municipal course while carrying what appears to be beer.

The 30-second ad is produced as a music video set in a rowdy bar with Daly singing “Go Long or Go Home” while he plays guitar (and dances). It is intercut with shots of Daly driving off a tee, tooling around in a cart, riding on the back of the cart and grabbing a cup of what looks like beer — Maxfli says it is ginger ale — but not drinking it as he drives away.

I know! Why doesn't CBS Sport use that time to show the mangled dead bodies of our troops being blown apart in larger numbers since Bush's surge!

Or maybe they could show Iraq veteran Ty Ziegel and his wife, Renee Kline's wedding pictures (click on my name). Lord knows a picture of a fat golfer holding a beer in his hand is far worse than missing faces and limbs.

I'd much rather have my kids grow up to be killed in Iraq for Exxon than play golf drunk. Maybe CBS wants us to worry about John Daily so we won't wonder why they fired Dan Rather for trying to save us from a criminal and turned their heads while Bush took us to war that's hell on our kids, but great for his Bushie Buddies. I for one fear the grave less and less these days.

Me thinks CBS doesn't see John Daly as much of a role model for America's youth.

Me tends to agree.

So if he's not drinking it on camera, what's the big deal? Lots of commercials, oh, like beer commercials, amaretto commercials, show booze.

Am I the only one who expected this story to be about Arkansas' First Lady?

Dunno, Spirit. It didn't occur to me, but maybe you are more attuned the pol side of things than I am (I tend to rank the sides of any controversy equally and read what grabs my attention).

Ginger has a long way to go before I'll think of her at the mention of ginger ale. (I'd more likely think of "Gilligan's Island".) I'm keeping my eye open, though, but I really don't expect any "Jethrene" moments from Ginger.

I do have an open mind, though. "Once burned ... etc."

Considering that drunk driving kills about 17,000 Americans EVERY year and about 250 Arkansans EVERY year, advertisers should be careful about the PERCEIVED message and the KNOWN messenger.
