Pryor-Halter

The matchup came up in our Q&A tonight. So happens that Congressional Quarterly has a squib about it too. They say Pryor is still a safe bet. Me, too.

Me, three

"Arkansas is home to many conservative voters - preventing Pryor from being deemed a safe bet this early in the campaign season."

I can attack this from 2 directions, which is hard if you're as full of pork loin as I am at the moment.

If Arkansas is indeed home to many conservative voters, which I'd tend to agree with, then Pryor is their man. Even the Republicans should be voting for Pryor in 2008...especially the Republicans.

On the other hand if a good Republican comes along (it was hard to type that line) and enough of those same conservative voters join with people like me who will castrate themselves before voting for Pryor again....He could be toppled.

I think it's fantastic to contemplate an Arkansas outpouring of love for a Democrat who not only voted like a Republican during the most dangerous time in modern history to do so. But also confirmed most of the Republican criminals in office today. And....and and and...voted FOR TORTURE.

Arkansas rejected the Republicans in the 2006 election and appears to like Bush about 28% and yet we're led to believe that Mark Pryor is beloved and can't be beat. How does that work? With the exception of a couple of votes Pryor could be spelled B-U-S-H.

Have we quickly returned to the old days when the Democrat gets elected automatically? Is it because Mark made it 1 term without getting caught with a stripper? Is it Daddy's name? Are we afraid to have an intelligent, forceful person in our Senate seat?

If Mark Pryor was a baseball player, with his record, he'd be sent back to the farm team or traded off. What happened to wanting the Best and the Brightest?

I look forward to seeing him run on his record. Halter should be able to hang him with miles and miles of his own rope. We can do better!

I disagree. Bill Halter received a lot of cross-over votes from Republicans last time. In heavily Republican areas, Halter received more votes than any other Democrat. Running against Holt wouldn't be the same as running against Pryor, but I don't like the way Pryor votes most of the time. I think he is having an identity crisis. He can't decide if he is a Democrat or a Republican. I have a hard time following the Democratic stance that you have to support the person already elected because they stand a better chance of keeping the seat. Having said all of this, I really think Halter might be a little hesitant to jump into the arena again so quickly.

Halter is whetting his bill for the Governor's chair.

I'd look forward to a fresh face giving Pryor a run for his money.

I don't know enough about Holt or Halter to even answer a poll question with a yes or no. Looking forward to learning more.

But the next election has a lot more senate republicans up for a fight than Dems and of course it's a good damn time to be wearing a D badge. So it's a very safe time to do the right thing..as if we shouldn't clean this guy out no matter what.) He wouldn't even qualify as a decent republican, imo.

Every party may let just anyone claim their affiliation but we all need to do some house cleaning along the way. Pryor is a blemish on our AR D party and the national party. He was the very last D to join ranks and vote (once) towards ending the Iraq fiasco.

I still think his vote for Gozales as AG caused us serious problems...and thankfully it came back quickly with a slap in the face lie.. (Blanche voted no AG Gonzo, along with the vast majority of D Senators)

And voting to reverse our laws back 800 years...pre magna carta for goodness sakes! Habeas Corpus is the only right our founding fathers wrote into the body of the constitution because it is that important. Frankly I want somebody with their ideas directed towards the same couple hundred years..preferably the next hundred years with liberty intact.

If we Democrats can't clean our own house when it's absolutely needed then we have no credibility when criticizing others.

"I think he is having an identity crisis."

I think you're probably right, Farkle, only it's not whether he's R or D. Mr David no doubt brought up Mr Mark in "the ways" of politics, but young Mr David seems more focused on following his dad's "ways" toward success than on following his dad's heart.

I think they need to sit down and talk.

Hmmm

Think Progress has post up RE Sen Ted (it clogs the toobz) Stevens is in such hot water even Bush doesn't want to deal with him on appointing USA's.. After all Veeco did pay to jack up his house and slip a new first floor under the original first floor.

Don't know if the R Gov would get to appoint a new Senator or if a special election would be called but that is one bad Rapple that probably wont be around long.

And the Hill is reporting Saxby Chambliss is vulnerable in the next GA election as well... I say bring back Max Cleland with a smile.

Hill link at my name

Just checked with an Alaskan and this is what they said...

Eureka Springs,

After then ex-Sen, now ex-Gov Frank Murkowski appointed his daughter - after he had been elected governor, thus vacating the senate seat - Sen. Murkowski's (the Sen. Murkowski now in the senate) appointment was seen as unseemly. Since then a voters' initiative has changed the process so in most cases, the voters would choose the replacement. But we're getting close enough to Stevens's seat coming up in 17 months, there would be an interim replacement, who could then run as an incumbent. Alaskans would probably elect a Republican in either process.

I'd take Halter over Pryor in a second. Not even really knowing his position on many issues. I've written Pryor several times during his term when he's sold out Democratic values for what I guess he deemed "safe" votes. He's dead to me as a candidate. (Unless he wins the primary, then of course I'll be stuck with him.) Maybe a tight primary will scare some liberal into him.
