Soup's on -- UPDATE

Enthusiasm seemed high, so I've speeded up the startup of a new food blog, Eat Arkansas.

Click it here. Belly Boy has already posted news to me of a great burger in a Wright Avenue produce market.

It's a soft opening. It will take a little time to get a rhythm to it. But your notes will be invaluable. Write me at max@arktimes.com

We'll take tips, food-related news releases, your reviews, your photos -- anything related to the wining and dining and noshing and snacking and cooking arts. Attitude welcome.

UPDATE: People are trying to post to the food blog already. Indeed, my control mechanism shows several comments HAVE been posted. But, for some reason, they are not showing up on the website tiself. We have some fine-tuning to do.

UPDATE II: Comments are posted now. I don't know if they are going automatically. I may have to moderate for a time.

QUESTION: Yes, recipes are OK.

Mike Huckabee to Hold Media Availability Prior to Campaign Fundraiser
Little Rock, AR - Former Arkansas Governor Mike Huckabee will be joined by fundraising co-host, Deena Burnett-Bailey, to answer questions from the media this evening from 5 p.m. - 5:15 p.m. CT, prior to a fundraising reception at the home of Lisenne Rockefeller. Mrs. Burnett-Bailey is the widow of Flight 93 hero, Tom Burnett. The media availability will be held at the Rockefeller home at 3518 Hill Road. The fundraising reception is closed to the media.

Food is a favorite subject of almost everybody.

On the subject of favorite subjects, I'm surprised DBI hasn't turned Billiken Man into a sex blog.

And speaking of "Soup's On", does Arkansas have a best-known place for soup? I've always dreamed of what the Soup Nazi on Seinfeld was selling. It must have been wonderful.

I guess soup questions should go on the food blog, though.

Did somebody say FOOD?

The BIG in BIGFAN1 is a descriptive term.

One of my favorite places to pig-out is Larry's Pizza.

I love me some Larry's Pizza. Variety is the spice of life. The Pizza Parade is great. Bring them on girls!

But the other night...one of the cute servers walked by and said in a questioning tone....."Baked Potato?"

Yes. Baked Potato Pizza.

Tasted like a....you guessed it, Baked Potato.

Chives, butter, sour cream and potato slices on a pizza crust.

Uh.......yum, yum?

ARK. BLOG: Get on over to the Eat Arkansas blog and add your thoughts to the open refrigerator item.

OK, it won't let me post at the food blog, apparently, but I can still post here, I hope...

Living in fast food chain territory, I can only try to imagine the cheeseburger described.

But regarding the 2" thick burger, there's something I've only recently discovered in life. It's possible to ruin a good thing with too much stuff. There's an ideal mix.

I've discovered it's possible to put so many goodies on a pizza that it's not really as good as a more balanced one.

I've discovered that you can put too much butter in a pineapple upside-down cake and, instead of being the best ever, it's just too wet, and too rich. Imagine "too rich". But it IS possible.

Likewise, too much burger, like too much bread or any other ingredient, can throw off the balance and make things worse, not better.

That being said, I'm sure Belly Boy is right and the Hall and Sons Produce cheeseburgers are worship-worthy. With any luck, I'll get to find out some day!

That burger sounds like it would hold you all day! I'll have to try that. You can get a variety of good soups around LR at Dave's, Cheers in the Heights, the Downtown Deli, Saigon, PeiWei and the Stockpot.

Spirit, LR has several restaurants that serve good soup, but it's hard to beat the soups at Bossa Nova. (In Hillcrest, where else?)

Dave's, Cheers in the Heights,
the Downtown Deli, Saigon,
PeiWei and the Stockpot.
...Bossa Nova in Hillcrest.

I'm serious. I may have to drive the multi-hour 2-lane to Little Rock some day just to eat at these places.

Pocahontas has your standard, delicious, good local BBQ and catfish places, one local place that does good fried chicken, one private steak place that does great work (by local standards). All the other eats come from national chains.

So I waste away, at just under 200 lbs., wishing for samples of Little Rock's, and Arkansas' best. Looking forward to the new food blog.

The first two times I tried to post, I got a message approximating "your message has been received and will be review by our hard-working staff". In the past, that meant they went into oblivion, but these seem to have made it to to the blog, so all is fairly well.

Spirit,

Go to your blog and check the comments on "Home Field Advantage."

I left you four of Al Yeganeh -- otherwise known as the Soup Nazi -- best recipes including my favorite and Kramer's Indian Mulligatawny.

Enjoy!

Spirit, if you have minimal cooking skills and limited time, I posted my cream of brocolli soup recipe just for you.

Got 'em. Thanks!

Much appreciated!
Browned garlic should be every cook's secret weapon. Yum!

Not sure I've ever seen soy milk for sale, but I don't do the shopping. I'll put in request and I'm sure it'll appear like magic!

Thanks!
