The Hog opera -- UPDATE

Part 3 in ESPN's series on As Fayetteville Turns focuses on UA Athletic Director Frank Broyles. The football coach, Houston Nutt, loves him some Coach Broyles.

"Frank Broyles is the best," football coach Houston Nutt volunteers, without being asked. "He's the best athletic director because he understands what a coach needs. And he's a dying breed, and that's what upsets you the most. That they had a lot to do with his decision of standing down. …

"It bothers me. It bothers me a bunch. I don't think it will ever diminish -- his accomplishments overshadow everything that's going to happen. This little stuff won't affect what he's done. This building will still have his name on it. The tradition, the caring of his athletes, that's going to keep going. His legacy will be phenomenal. But what hurts is to think that he stepped down because he thought this was the time to do it. I just wish things would have been different."

UPDATE: Jim Harris over at Arkansas Business blogs that these and other stories on the UA saga are being promoted by Nutt as damage control for the ire his stirred up in Springdale and frequently include accounts about his own history at variance with the facts, such as the real reason he departed in such a hurry while a player at Arkansas.

In Junior College, 2nd year creative writing that would earn a high "D."

Frank Broyles little kingdom must end as they all must. He may be the Mick Jaggers of Arkansas but Mick's days are numbered too.

A lot like JoePa, Frank stayed too long and tarnished his legacy. Although, now that he has taken the shine off of it, it was really more smoke than fire, a mixed bag like the rest of us, a few good things and some pretty poor ones.

Someone please hand HDN a hanky to wipe the big brown ring around his nose off....

"There's actually only about 2.8 million Arkansans, according to 2006 estimates published last week by USA Today. That ranks Arkansas 33rd among the 50 states in population, yet its football team ranked 20th among 119 Division I-A schools in attendance, men's basketball 12th out of 334 and baseball second nationally, according to 2006 numbers. (Arkansas officials say they lead the nation in baseball attendance this spring, highlighted by a record 29,000-plus turnstile count for a recent three-game series with LSU.)" -- Pat Forde

SOUNDS LIKE A BIG-TIME SUCCESS STORY TO ME. MY FRIENDS. IMAGINE TAKING YOUR BUSINESS FROM A $900,000 ENTERPRISE TO ONE VALUED AT $44 MILLION. BROYLES DID IT, AND IT WAS DUE TO HIS BRAINS, ENERGY, DRIVE, AND HARD WORK. THE WHINERS' PETTY CRITICISM AND NIT PICKING ISN'T GOING TO CHANGE THAT.

DITTO DURANGOLKID FOR ME!!!!!

From my sources, I hear that Houston Nutt actually meticulously planned all of this when he transferred back in 1976, and these ESPN reports represent a culmination of his hard behind-the-scenes finagling! I've no doubt he's sitting in his office right now, calmly stroking a fine white-haired cat, content that his finely crafted plans have at last bore luscious fruit. This madman must be stopped!

Tell me again how this is good news?

Rome's on fire, and we're all fiddling and going to the circus.

i read the article and it is wrong for a board member to vow to make changes in the athletic dept. the springdale situation is crazy and at this point i am ready to nuke the entire town after letting 3 or 4 people i know leave first, i am so sick of the name springdale. i wish everybody would hush about the soap opera and just start worrying about the players and who can run, block and catch. these are kids playing games, i realize that they are high money sports we made them that byu paying the tickets and contributions, but it is still 18-21 year old kids playing sports. what is funny is the people screaming loudest are not ticket holders, they are 'interested people" if they are so interested then spend their money and show support. we watch because it is fun, not because we have a personal intrest in who is screwing who after the game is over or who text messagex who outside of their family. who cares?

In case you need reminding of HDN record as UofA head coach:

38-36 in SEC play
0-5 vs. GA
0-3 vs. FL
3-6 vs. LSU (0-4 since '02)
2-4 vs. Tennie
1-1 vs. Vandy
2-2 vs. Kentucky (7 OT win w/ MJ)
5-4 against Bama and 1 game over .500 against Auburn.
0-2 in SECCGs
0-2 vs. USC (120 against - 31 for total points)
2-5 in bowl games (0-3 vs. Big Ten)
0 BCS appearances
67-44 overall with 19 wins over the likes of SEMO, Mizzou St., ULM, etc. and 21 wins over the Mississippi Schools, S. Carolina and Vandy.

(borrowed)

O.K., Cato, I'll bite. I have seen these kinds of statistics before.

So someone please tell me what Nutt has on the administration to keep his job.

In an environment of teetotaling self-righteous fundamentalists who titillate themselves with text messages to sexy sports anchorwomen, what the hell are we supposed to believe?

what difference does it make to any of us if he does anything with a whole group of girls? this is what i am talking about. did nutt make a pledge to you that he would not chase cute girls as coach? if not what difference does it make to any of us? this is football, not presidenting where they put their hand on the bible and promise to fathifully execute the job of president and not ever get any blowjobs.

About the current turmoil in the Razorback nation, Kelly Whiteside wrote the following in the Sports Cover Story of the Tuesday, May 29 edition of USA TODAY:

"It would be hard to understand even if the Razorbacks had struggled last season. Instead, the team won 10 games for the first time since 1989. Their four losses, including the final three games of the year, were to teams ranked in the top five in the season's final poll. They won the Southeastern Conference Western Division title. Nutt was named SEC coach of the year. Running back Darren McFadden was the Heisman Trophy runner-up and is a leading Heisman hopeful entering the fall."

In the same story, Whiteside quoted McFadden as having said, "For us (the players), it (the fracas) hasn't been difficult. For Coach Nutt, I feel like it's outrageous and crazy for anyone to have to put their family through things like that. He knows we support him, the whole team."

And running back Felix Jones? Whiteside wrote that Jones takes the attack on Nutt personally and quoted him as saying, "I just feel like when you're attacking him, you're attacking us as well."

But hey, for what does the season record count? And what the dickens do players like McFadden and Jones, and outsiders like Whiteside know? All that really counts is what all the little wannabe Ken Starrs have to say as they run here and there with their silly little investigations, FOIA requests, lawsuits, and all the rest.

Were I Houston Nutt's psychiatrist, the first thing I'd do is point out that the unrest and nasty fan interference is not unique to him or to Arkansas. It's pervasive throughout the SEC. There have been 26 SEC coaches to come and go during Nutt's time at Arkansas. Wasn't long ago they were about to behead Mack Brown at Austin, too. You can be sure they'll be on his case again soon. Oh, how we do love to pick at and judge others! Makes us feel really superior, doesn't it.

Houston just doesn't understand that when he's paid close to 2 million dollars a year - much more than heart surgeons and medical faculty, that he's actually scrutinized about how he treats his players.

If even a small part of Mitch Mustain's allegations are true, than Houston Nutt is a poor excuse for a coach and mentor of young men.
