David Iglesias in Portland

More from the city of roses: David Iglesias, the former US Attorney for New Mexico, spoke candidly today to AANers at a lunch talk. He kicked off his speech with some quips about being a disillusioned Republican, who'd, to paraphrase President Clinton he said, "sipped the loyalty Kool-Aid, swished it around, but not swallowed."

The only real question he wouldn't answer was who he thought of the remaining US attorneys had prosecuted cases based on politics. That  followed him admitting that he thought there were "a couple" out there.

Other things of interest: He said he found Ashcroft to be a straight-shooter, and he said that the shift from Ashcroft to Gonzales was one of working for people doing law enforcement to working for the White House.

He also said that he believes there's a smoking gun email out there and reminded the audience that forensic investigations dig up "conveniently" deleted emails all the time. That nothing's ever really deleted.

What else? In the open Q&A, Alan asked if there's likely to be any fallout with N.M. Representative Heather Wilson and Senator Pete Domenici, both of whom called Iglesias to pressure him to proceed with election fraud charges on Democrats just before the elections last year. Iglesias noted that Wilson only won her seat by some 800 votes, so her position is probably tenuous, but that even though Domenici's poll numbers are as low as they've ever been, the only Democrat in N.M. who could likely unseat him is Bill Richardson, who's got bigger fish to fry right now.

PS: If ever in Portland, the Japanese garden in Washington Park is worth a look. I forgot my camera cord, but I'll have pics up on Rock Candy early next week. Off for more debauchery learning and with a jacket!

Click on my name to go to the New Yorker which just released a 9 page article by Seymour Hersh entitled, 'The General's Report."

Army Major General Antonio M. Taguba was given the task to investigate the abuses at Abu Ghraib prison. Though he released his report all up and down the military chain of command, Rummy and other top brass testified before Congress that "oh my good heavens...this is the first I've heard of such a thing"......you know what a liar Rummy was and is.

Anyway...get a jug of tea or beer and some popcorn cause this is a long read. And of course in the end...they shoot the messenger. Read it and weep.....it's not your father's country any more.

CW says to watch the pressure in this Attorneygate scandal to turn up as Bush vetos spending bills and presses to keep up the failed occupation of Iraq.

This can all easily lead to impeachment, but apparently no one has the balls to toss out King George even though there is a mountain of evidence of impropriety and even strong hints of criminal wrongdoing.

Everyone up there in DC is obviously still too interested in the status quo and quietly making money off the war through their investments, even while being barely vocal against it as a token measure of trying to have the appearance of being against the war. UGH. It's disgusting. If you don't believe me, do some research on who all owns stock in Halliburton, for instance. Or pick any other military-industrial giant that's traded on Wall Street.

The Kool-Aid has flown into the collective cups of all in Washington, and they need a serious wake up call...can we afford to wait till 08? If not, what then?

Will weeks after weeks of the Congress revealing to America all the dastardly deeds of the Bushies result in any real changes? Not yet. So how about ending this bipartisan circle jerk and start doing your jobs, ok?

A paper published by a think tank last month warned that Sen. Blanche Lincoln's ascendancy to the Agriculture Committee chairmanship was a bad omen for passage of climate-change legislation in 2010 due to her close ties to agricultural producers and processors seen as major contributors of greenhouse gases. /more/
