Immigration bill defeat

The Senate beat the compromise today by refusing to end a filibuster. With 60 votes needed, 46 votes to end filibuster and 53 opposed it.

Sen. Lincoln voted for the motion; Sen. Pryor against. His statement:

We must reform our nation’s broken immigration system with tough, fair and realistic legislation.  I voted against the President’s immigration plan today because the border security and enforcement measures are inadequate and the bill fails to effectively address the individuals who are already here illegally. We should not pass a plan the Congressional Budget Office estimates will only reduce annual illegal immigration by 25 percent.

The Senate has now failed to pass immigration reform for the third time. It’s time for a new approach. I advocate that we strengthen and implement the enforcement measures in this bill and show we can fully enforce immigration laws. As the Senate works behind the scenes to draft a stronger and more sensible bill, President Bush can and should take immediate steps to enforce the laws already on the books. He can do better, and so can the Senate.

I wonder how "libergressive" radio will react?

That Pryor is amazing. Maybe Huckleberry should run against Pryor. He could be the progressive candidate.

The majority of American citizens want all 40 million mexicans sent back accross the river, now! NO excuses, period. Anyone caught using them should be fined and jailed.

I wish the bill would let us keep the aliens and ship the rednecks out.

Arguably, we need MORE immigrants. It would make our country stronger, smarter and more competitive on the world market.

The senate bill was a horrible mess that didn't solve problems. It also treats those here illegally much better than those who go through the legal channels. It would have bankrupted the social security and medicare funds. No one who is fiscally conservative could in good conscience vote for this bill. The senate didn't even bother getting a cost estimate for passing the bill.

Any time President Bush works with Senator Kennedy on a bill, it turns into a disaster. The No Child Left Behind was the last big project that the two developed.

Since Senator Kennedy feels so strongly in his support of the Mexican people, it would seem that he would push for reforms in Mexico to make that natural resource rich country more palatable to its citizens. It is embarrassing that we have a country to our south that is so corrupt and is so lacking for opportunitites for its citizens to make a decent living.

"it would seem that he would push for reforms in Mexico to make that natural resource rich country more palatable to its citizens."

That's crazy talk. Enough with the logical comments.

chasv..... I follow this very closely... and I don't know what poll your talking about.

Most national polls in the last 5 years has shown that U.S. citizens overwhellmingly support a guest worker visa, and some kind of fine and legitamate status for the 12 Million plus illegal aliens who are here already. Do your research.

This bill was not the best solution.... by a long shot...but... it might have been better than nothing.

Untill 1929 there really wasn't any illegal immigration. Lotty dotty everybody could come in. So most of our ancestors came in before there was any laws against it!

America was built on successive waves of unskilled and low skilled immigrants.

The Irish pushed up and displaced the english, the Italians pushed up and displaced the Irish, the Pols to the Italians, ect....

Each wave took over jobs that the last wave had grown tired of working. Thus, mostly pushing the last wave into the next income and socio-economic level.

The U.S. depends on this for long term economic progress.

Coming across the border illegally is a CIVIL MISDEMEANOR by law... about like speeding or running a stop sign... maybe we should deport everyone who runs a stop sign....

The reality is that it shold be a felony, however, IT'S NOT!

The curent punishment is that someone gets BANNED for life from applying for a visa, even if they are married to a U.S. citezen, have U.S. children, and are a contrubuting member of society.

That is an awful harsh punishment for a misdemeanor! I usually just pay a fine for one.......

We have to secure our border with everything we have. We also need to get as many people out of the shadows as we can and find out who we have here. If they have no hope of a Visa of any type they will stay in the shadows.... which is a hugh risk to our security that we can not afford.

Probably for the exact opposite reasons, I'm glad this "partial-birth abortion" immigration bill is stalled.

It turns brown-skinned human beings into Piņatas. Those for this mess of a bill really want to stomp some puppies. Instead they'll settle for causing extreme misery and hardship on an entire class of people. What's wrong guys....weren't breast fed at birth?

Big Business has welcomed our brown brothers and sisters with open arms. There used to be a private bus that operated between the southern border and Fort Baptist....I'm not sure that the bus has quit running. Gathering up chicken gutters, ya know.

These people settled in and got right down to work. They've caused very few problems and buy up new stuff every time they get a paycheck. I don't give a damn if they're legal or not. Screw a little piece of paper, as long as they're law abiding citizens...that's all that counts.

The folks for this pus-pocket bill are either operating on fear or hate or both. It makes their skin crawl to think of some dark skinned family moving close to them and walking around their town. They're Daddies felt the same way about black folks. Their granddaddies probably lynched a few.

Those in fear watch too much Fox News and lay down every night imagining some Spanish speaking rapist is going to get them before the sun comes up again. These same folks actually believe we have to kill them there or we'll have to kill them here someday in the near future.

They also likely still believe Saddam was behind 9-11. They'll eat Tyson chicken, but like Boss Womack, they want them damn Mexicans to live far off where they can't be seen. They don't operate in a world of reason.

When you combine the 2 you get chasv. Hates everyone, fears everyone.....would probably kill a Mexican if no one was looking and if Pedro was walking away......yep....chasv is a back shooter.

And all of this bother over an immigration bill that will never be passed and if passed never enforced keeps our eyes off the War for Oil in Iraq. Takes our attention off the evil being spun by President Cheney. What deficit? What body bags? What Justice Department?

Though I know he did it for the wrong reasons, I'm glad Pryor voted no today. But I'm sure he's reading from the script he was handed. They're gonna gum this one to death boys. We'd be much better off to forget immigration reform like we forgot Social Security reform and let everyone work and live and be happy.

Don't be fooled by smoke and mirrors. Our biggest problem is criminals in our government. Mexicans aren't ruining America, corrupt Republicans and weakling Democrats in nice suits are the guilty parties. Examine your priorities!

Thanks for your post TeddyRepub. You have cleared up some things for me and given me lots to think about.

Chasv, your Skinhead spew is ironically what makes many Republicans afraid to line up for immigration control. We don't want to be anywhere near your racist ilk.

If there are 40M *Hispanics* (not Mexicans) here and only 12M Illegal Hispanics here then logically about 28M Hispanics (nearly 3 out of 4 you pass on the street) are here *legally*. The sad truth is that you don't want immigration control or reform - you want ethnic cleansing. I'd take 12 wetbacks in trade for your sorry a$$ but I can't ship you out anymore than you have a right to call for 28M legals to leave.

This is the real conundrum of immigration reform - separating the need for reasonable immigration policy including the elimination of drug, weapon and human trafficking from pure knee-jerk racism.

Everybody knows there is a right way and a wrong way to do anything. Well, I guess some of you are blind and can't think that far. This is not just your country! How many of you have a mex working for you? NONE.
You are crazy to think America needs millions of mex here to only work for a few months only to end up on welfare or some government handout or assistance.
There are NOT Immigrants! They are invaders of our nation... severus said it right.
Well, folks, here is the only solution for this problem.
Anex mexico! make it a state just like the other 50 states.

chasv, how far do you live from a Mexican family? I happen to live in the middle of what looks like hundreds of Mexican families and none of them are laying around on welfare. Stop spreading lies.

They're hard working people. That's why their labor is valued. They'll work the jobs none of us want and be happy to cash that check.

They're replacing the Vietnamese who have moved up the ladder. Fortunately they're so hard at work they don't have time to notice guys like you.

It's a myth that they're sucking up government benefits.....it's a fairytale, a lie, a Fox News anti-fact. They came here to work and that's just what they're doing.

I'm delighted a bit of my tax money is going to educate their kids. Hell, ship up some kids from Darfur.....you can never go wrong educating a kid, it's the Christian thing to do, it's the right thing to do...it makes the world a better and safer place...we can afford it....bring them on!

Put immigration on the back burner and speaking of burn.....sit back and watch the Cheney administration burn to the ground. The fuse is lit.....get the Cokes and the lawn chairs....it's going to be a very hot summer in DC. Burn baby burn.

DBI that is not a lie. You are just looking a very small fraction of the invaders. There are over 40 million of them here, 40 million. Mexico only has around 140 million citizens. They are inundating our heath system costing much more there than they add. I bet you have lots of pets living in your house. Those people are NOT profitting you at all and you know it so why the bleeding heart. ANNEX MEXICO.
Why not send ships to all foriegn lands to bring their poor here so they can find a job. EVERY ONE IN THE WORLD Can't just cross a river to reach the land of milk and honey.
I know they'd love living here too. Why not? If we don't that is discrimination. Wake up!

Then you better take that inscription off the Statue of Liberty. You know the one that says......

Give me your tired, your poor,
Your huddled masses yearning to breath free.
The wretched refuse of your teeming shore.
Send these, the homeless, tempest-tost to me.
I lift my lamp beside the golden door!
Emma Lazurus, 1883

They pay taxes like the rest of us. Someone can't escape income tax, property tax, sales tax, whatever tax, unless they're part of the cash economy (which far more 'good' American citizens belong to than any other group).

The anti-Hispanic bias is not because of economics. It's because people don't like people who are different. Our society has simply moved part of the energy we formerly spent persecuting blacks and women over to hispanics.

Mexico needs to be changed so it's people won't have to go anywhere to find work or peace of mind. What is wrong with mexico? Why the hell do the people exist their borders?
Some how somebody fix it damn it.
Theodo do do . like po po,
Stress of nations is one sign of the end of the world. Get ready or else go through Tribulations.

Ah, chasv, that is a very good question. Mexico (and many other South American and Central American countries) has several problems.

First and maybe foremost, the right wing religious people have outlawed abortion and tell everyone that birth control is wrong. So, the women have a hard time controlling their reproduction.

Second, the right wingers are in control of the government (encouraged and supported by the US), so there are a very few haves, and a BUNCH of have-nots.

Then there are the free trade agreements that were put in (Cafta and others), that had nothing in them about human rights or respect for their economies. Their countries were flooded with with cheap US corn, driving many farmers out of business.

In fact, I would think that those that don't want more immigration would support Hugo Chavez because of his social programs. The happier the people are there, the less they will want to come here.
