The Arkansas history debate

The press conference we mentioned yesterday about historians unhappy with new state guidelines for teaching Arkansas history.

Well, it's nice to see someone expressing concern for a school issue that matters.

Now I 'know' this doesn't involve Houston Nutt, Native American football mascots or heisman candidates, but, Arkansas, let's see if we can pay attention long enough to resolve a real educational issue.

"Thompson acknowledged that it was "unfortunate" that the textbook review occurred the same year as the standards were revised, and said the agency might have to take a closer look at what materials are available for teaching Arkansas history in the high schools." ~Baxter Bulletin

REALLY? It's 'unfortunate' is it? Well, that's the schedule the ADE has set up; it happens EVERY year to EVERY subject as their frameworks get revised.

Unfortunate - yes, indeed.

Why doesn't someone change it?

Regarding the frameworks - I can tell you that about 1000 Student Learning Expectations (SLEs) were added for economics in grades 5-6. Teachers have been frustrated by this.
