When a filibuster isn't a filibuster -- UPDATE

When Republicans do it. Tell me again about the liberal media.

And speaking of the war, the D-G didn't find much room for details on the national intelligence estimate that reports on surging terrorism around the world. Here's a full NY Times account.

UPDATE: As expected, the Republicans' filibuster was successful. The vote to end debate was 52-47, but 60 votes were needed.

Comments

Republicans cried for an up or down vote when it came to confirming Alito and Roberts to the bench... and almost changed to Senate rules to stop the "obstruction" by the Democrats.... I guess getting a vote on a Supreme Court nominee is more important than finding out where Senators stand on the war... maybe the Democrats should threaten to change Senate rules... and I'm glad at least a few people in Washington lost a little bit of sleep over the war... Bush and Cheney sure haven't...

You could always go nuclear.

However, that was "bad" when the GOP threatened to do so.

Speaking of nuclear, how is Pryor's gang holding up.

Republicans are addicted to killing and death. They should be made to beg for it 30 hours at a time before the world suffers these bloody war mongering fools any longer. After watching much of this process one thing is clear they are so wrapped up in their lies and far to proud to ever admit that millions of lives and lost limbs are on their hands (for a botched robbery attempt).. so why not more? Seems to be their best plan.

Of course I didn't see all of it but can say Senator Harkin read letters from constituents late last night which brought the words "We were lied into this war" to the senate floor for what I believe to be the first time in the so called "debate." Senator Harkin deserves a medal for his speech, it was a rare thing of beauty.

Menendez (NJ) Made many good points and is another worth watching if some of these clips show up on youtube.

Cantwell, Really brought it home with "war for oil" "Iraqis wont sign the oil deal" etc..

Few senators were wiling to speak the actual truth but I do get a strong sense if this filibustering were to be the norm while for awhile that the facts would have a much better chance of breaking through and becoming a part of the debate..

So, much more of this Leader Reid, much, much more, please.

And Joe Lieberman (among a few others) is worse than Benedict Arnold he really want s war with Iran in the worst way and minces few words in saying so..

There were calls for the formation of a new gang of fourteen by Senator Collins in support of Salazar's bill which goes back to the dated and weak ISG and we know this has been Pryors plan for quite some time. Bottom line, a return to the ISG means the occupation or worse continues unabated.

Senator Landreiu had the audacity to place a large poster of Usamas FBI most wanted page beside her while ignoring the fact Usama is not wanted by the FBI in connection for any attack on US soil.

Of course there were plenty of calls for much more killing and increasing troop numbers while escalating into several other countries like Iran, Pakistan, Jordan, because you know this has all been such a grand idea from the get go..

McCain wants to steal the oil.. demands it frantically while making no apology.. at least that part of his lost soul is admitting the truth.

"the Republicans' filibuster
was successful. The vote to
end debate was 52-47, but
60 votes were needed."

So why not let the filibuster continue? Let the Senate grind to a halt until they get the 60 votes. It's the Republicans blocking things. Let them be seen as such.

It's 100% about stealing oil. Both parties believe America will wither and die without the oil under the ground in Iraq. That is the real reason this partial birth abortion in Iraq has been going on for 52 months.

I like oil...I like driving...but we're pouring blood into our tanks along with gasoline. On top of that we're earning the hatred of the world with our greed, with our torture, with our killing.

It is no surprise we're in more danger, not less. We've FK'ed the world for 52 months...they hate us more, not less. We've been safe more or less since 9-11, but that won't hold. Cheney has made sure another 9-11 will happen. Killing them faster won't work because we can't kill fast enough. This Christian nation simply can't kill fast enough.....what a thing to have to type!

Cheney will bring misery on us like we've never known. He must be removed now. We have to stop the war and figure out a way to use diplomacy to save our sorry asses.

We have to bring our troops home to help defend us from the Cheney dictatorship. That Order 51 business proves no elections are planned for next year.

The War in Iraq is distracting us from the takeover of America by Cheney neo-cons. We are the German people of the late 30s. We aren't smart enough to see whats coming at us. No group changes the laws, the meaning of the laws like Cheney has done unless they're planning a takeover.

It's no plan...it's now! It's underway and it's working. 9-11 will be a pimple on a gnat's butt compared to whats in store for us from the hands of Cheney neo-cons. We need our troops home now from over there in order to fight Cheney over here.

We are in the End Times....but it's not the end of the world.....just the end of America. Laugh at a Democrat today....lick the boots of a Republican tomorrow. Be mad...go nuts...it's time!

Why do liberals whine about the death of Amerika like it's a bad thing? A new world order is coming! The one we scared uninformed lackeys into helping us create. The olde world was over in 2000 and you still haven't figured it out. Bless our sacred war-monger, the Prince of Pieces.

"If there is hope, wrote Winston, it lies in the proles." "Until they become conscious they will never rebel, and until after they have rebelled they cannot become conscious." George Orwell

So why not let the filibuster continue? Let the Senate grind to a halt until they get the 60 votes. It's the Republicans blocking things. Let them be seen as such.

Spirit, As I understand it, Leader Reid pulled the vote/amendment back at the last minute this morning... so the senate will have to consider it all over again at some point in time.. before October.

Thank god for CNN's coverage of a plane crash in Brazil...while the death of our democracy crashes in all around us.

Did they say why he pulled it back, rather than letting the Republican filibuster continue?

If the Democrats aren't serious about the bill, why was it introduced in the first place? Just to get Republicans on record as being pro-war? That's a Republican-like tactic. The public already see the Republicans for what they are. Trying to rub their noses in it might end up backfiring, like it did for the Republicans, who took everything to the extreme in order to assure victory at all costs. In the end, their tactics assured them defeat.

DBI, Here is another in a long line of self declared fascist powers by the president on the White House web site...

These declarations have been coming out of the Bush white house constantly for years...

As Senator Byrd said on the senate floor yesterday..

Is anybody listening?

Executive Order: Blocking Property of Certain Persons Who Threaten Stabilization Efforts in Iraq

(Seemingly innocuous in name but frightening in scope, especially when viewed in conjunction with so many other executive orders of this nature.)

Spirit, the Demos are not about fixing or correcting anything at present. Least any of us forget they are all poll-driven politicians, except a very notable few--Kucinich on the L comes to mind and Ron Paul on the R comes to mind.

When they see poll numbers that says anti war stance will get them re elected they go for it; when they see poll numbers that signal gay bashing gets them into the golden parachute club, the best socialized medicine program in the world, lucrative retirement for life, they bash.
It is an exercise in Invertebrate Politics, mostly on both sides as the lowest common denominator replaces statesmanship.

Barrack is keen at it. Hillary is keen at it. Rs perfected it since 90s. Hillary still thinks her votes were justifiable while selling her audience on how intelligent a candidate she is.

"The report concluded that the United States would face a "persistent and evolving terrorist threat over the next three years."

That judgment was not based on any specific intelligence about an impending attack on American soil, government officials said. Only two pages of "key judgments" from the report were made public; the rest of the document remained classified."

Key judgements, an 'priori' conclusion reached by oil magnates in 1999.

Show me something that smacks of intelligence.
.

Which oil whore will get your vote?

Did they say why he pulled it back, rather than letting the Republican filibuster continue?

I didn't hear his reasoning, sorry.

If Leader Reid will rub the Republicans nose in the blood flow of American troops and endless stream of disappearing US dollars... I say God Speed Mr Leader!

The last time Republicans filibustered was against the civil rights bill in 1964... If Dems need to expose the Republicans through filibuster for the agents of death and plunderers of treasure they really are.. then so be it.

Frankly I view last night as the first tiny rehearsal step of what will be needed many more times to break the chain of lies and denial in DC...

Reid pulled the entire appropriations bill (sorry not amendment as I stated earlier) in order to be able to debate it again later.. why and what implications are debatable.. I for one am delighted he did this and only wish he did this sooner.. Republicans have blocked an up or down vote on the war 7 times this year (every time). It's time to fight the Republican quagmire, imo, since, you know, people are dying.

ymmv

Where's Philip Buster when you need him?

God I miss Steve Allen.

>"The last time Republicans filibustered was against the civil rights bill in 1964"<

You should check your facts.

On June 10, 1964, Sen. Robert Byrd finished a speech which lasted 14 hours and 13 minutes after it was determined 67 votes existed for cloture.

Last I checked, he was very much a Democrat.

A Red, Correct.. I meant to say conservatives.. those senate seats are now majority Republican... their philosophy remains intact.. and our democracy suffers because of it.

Now if only we could get Pryor to declare honestly where his true loyalty lies.

"surging terrorism around the world."

I just listened to Miss Condi state "we are ACTIVELY fighting Al-queda in Iraq,
and in Pakistan, in Afghanistan and in SAUDIA ARABIA."

Bet that comes as real news to our generals. Bet it also comes as real news to President MUSHARRAF, who has told Bushco repeatedly that he cannot survive with U.S. troops on his soil.
Oh wait! We lobbed some bombs into the netherland between Afghanistan and Pakistan. That's "actively fighting them."

Sorry Condi. Who would have thunk you possible of Bushlying.
.

If there is a God...and most of you know my stance on that...but if there is a God soon the Senate and the House will be in session 24-7 investigating and indicting Bushies...or I should say Chaneyies....which looks stupid in print.

I forget which at the moment, but the House or the Senate has the power to not only indict Harriet Meiers, but also to try her in the chambers. It hasn't happened in 75 years, but it's on the books and is certainly one of the things being looked at as I type.

So maybe the Senate staying in session all night was just a practice run for later this year when our Congress looks more like the Nuremberg Trials.

Those people aren't used to working a full day, much less day or night. But to get a rope around every Republican neck that deserves it means day and night court in the near future.

I'd like to avoid the rush and suggest early that Mark Pryor introduce a bill as soon as these trials are over....a bill that bans and banishes the Republican Party from US soil for 50 years.

Maybe in 2058 it might be OK to run a test trial and let a few Republicans run for dogcatcher. If that goes well, we'll let them try a run for higher office in 2060.

Records show Republicans have been more dishonest and deadly within the US over the last 6 years than any Neo-Nazi skinhead group.

Republicans don't burn crosses, but so far they've caused crosses to be erected over the wasted dead bodies of 3623 fine US troops. Which do you think is worse?
