A plea bargain
Whether it was an official plea bargain or not (the Hot Springs newspaper doesn't say), the wild-in-the-streets skateboarders who got taken down by the city constabulary in June pleaded no contest in district court yesterday to the charges stacked on them and walked away with small fines.
Skylar Nalls, 19, was fined a total of $150, plus costs, for skateboarding, fleeing and obstructing government operations. He also must perform 30 days of community service.
Judge Ralph Ohm fined Matthew Jon McCormack, 21, $210 plus costs for third-degree battery for his contact with Officer Kenneth Billingsley. Cops claimed McCormack caused an injury to Billingsley's right hand while objecting to the takedown of a fellow skater. McCormack must also do 30 days of community service.
According to the newspaper, the judge said he'd consider expunging the record of the convictions if the two pay fines and complete their community service.
Four other juveniles involved in the dustup had cases handled in juvenile court, where records are sealed.
I know you'll want to review McCormack's "battery" of the officer one more time.

FedEx should deliver this afternoon a complimentary new cat-o-nine-tails to replace the one you wore out flogging this dead nag.
ARK. BLOG: Had to get the last chapter. (Which seemed like a pretty good resolution all things considered.) Good WEHCO coordination on this, by the way. Story in Hot Springs paper but not in D-G, which had front-paged it.

American memories are not long enough to remember that before Reagan the protesters in this country were as routinely abused as prisoners in Oz. Reagan instructed his security apparatus to spare the anti-abortionists as they supported him. Thank baby Jesus we are going back to the good olde days of torturing free-speechers whos' content we disagree with.
"It is by the goodness of God that in our country we have those three unspeakably precious things: freedom of speech, freedom of conscience, and the prudence never to practice either of them."

Recall Raygun called for a "bloodbath" at Berkley (69-70), "if that what it takes."
No one "battered" the officer. He looks like he would fall like a wimp if someone ever
battered him.

Arkansas red neck cop outta control. May I reccommend the video "BUSTED" for the young skateboarders? It's great for teaching citizens how to conduct themselves during police encounters.
It just stands to reason that with an administration which encourages martial approaches and attitudes toward the world and American citizens, the police will adopt more martial techniques as well.
Know what I'm tired of? Seeing policemen dressed in military cargo pants and combat boots. That's military type dress, and the police ARE NOT A BRANCH of the military. If your're a cop, you need to take that crap off. One more way to blur the line between the military and local police. I'm thankful the citizenry is armed. I actually fear out of control police more than out of control military.

I absolutely agree with you on this issue of police acting like school yard bullies. This is just another instance of it.
What a joke, the officer sustained an injury to his hand while beating the crap out of a "dangerous" skateboarder.
I thought the comments by police about " what video doesn't show" was particularly hilarious.
You notice nobody ever gets away with that argument when confronted with cop car dash cams.
I think these kids could have handled themselves differently but what part of that video warranted grown men beating up kids I couldnt tell you.
These guys are cops, they should know beter. I also notice how quick cops are to claim that they had to defend themselves because they were in "danger." Danger ? give me a break.

I agree, and while we're on the subject, how about the black, black windows of unmarked cars -- and trucks? Someone in our local constabulary drives a big black, black truck with windows as dark as the paint job. Reminds me of those mean lookin' helicopters . . .
Now tell me. Someone who doesn't know who the driver is should feel safe pulling over for that unmarked big, black, black truck (or the old beater driven by a certain constable)?
The way I heard it black windows are illegal, guys. You gentlemen get a special dispensation or sumpin?

This video never fails to tick me off. What happened to the officer? This guy SHOULD NOT have a badge. What about a civil suit against the city for the injuries to the kids?
Boycott!
