Beebe stands in
One for the our-small-state file:
About 7 a.m. this morning, about 100 people of Indian descent gathered on the steps of the Capitol for the Friends of India's annual commemoration of India's independence from Great Britain in 1947. Mayor Mark Stodola was the scheduled speaker, but he'd been delayed. Jonathan Runnells of the secretary of state's office, who'd made arrangements for the event, was on hand and felt the pain of an absent dignitary. He spotted Gov. Mike Beebe pulling into his parking space by the tunnel under the Capitol steps. He dashed over and asked Beebe to fill in.
No problem. As our reporter told it, Beebe put on his coat, strolled to the lectern and gave a warm speech about the love of one's motherland and adopted motherland. The boy from Amagon could have a future in politics, they say. A rising star. The group, said M. Manjunath, was delighted with the substitute.

Gosh Mike Beebe is such a breath of fresh air. Ginger and he walk to church. He drives his own car. He keeps his promises and his initiatives are meant to improve ALL of Arkansas. Mark my words he will go down as one of Arkansas' greatest Governors!

If I didn't know better with regard to the source, I'd think that comment was sarcasm. While I'm certainly not the political expert that a serial political candidate is, I don't think we ought to be in the business of judging our governors by how they get to church and whether they drive themselves about. Paying attention to, say, issues might be a better idea. If we do that, we can observe Beebe playing coy on gay foster parenting or appointing industry lobbyists to key positions. Coupling unprincipled opportunism with a penchant for driving his own car does not make Mike Beebe a good governor. Actually doing something will handle that, and I'm not holding my breath.

Stodala partying too late? Maybe, but I figured he got the big head real fast.
BTW, the good mayor now gets big bucks, right? How big are the guv's bucks? I haven't kept up.

As a fellow Episcopalian with Gov. Beebe, I am not the least bit surprised. I would have expected nothing less.
