Hallowed traditions

Razorback football resumes this weekend. And there's something else to cheer about, our Fayetteville bureau reports. Maxine's Tap Room will welcome beer drinkers again this weekend, nine months after a fire heavily damaged the legendary joint. Our man reports: "And they have a recording of the late Maxine's trademark closing call, 'you have 10 minutes to drink up and GET THE HELL OUT!' which she so lovingly spewed out over the mike at every closing hour."

Is that what Maxine was yelling? I remember her schreeching something then the next thing I always remember was trying to get back up the hill to campus.

Hooray! I'll hoist a coldie in Maxine's honor. Reminds me of another '80s Fayetteville "last call" hollered by Bird at Roger's Rec: "You don't have to go home, but you can't stay here!"

'you have 10 minutes to drink up and GET THE HELL OUT!'

Wouldn't you love to yell this standing in the front door of the White House? May Maxine's be around for another 50 years and the new owners channel the absolute understanding of UA students that made Maxine's the best training wheels ever attached to a beer bike......whatever the hell that means. Did I take my pills this morning?

What's the word on the jukebox and how did they find those bus seat booth benches? Can't wait for my annual old guy pilgrimage to the place I spent so many of my finest years.

It's gonna be a wonderful weekend for NWA-Fayetteville. At my noon dog walk it was in the eighties.
Saturday's Farmer's market should be a bounty on the Fayetteville square after the rain in the past 10 days, there's the annual Clothes Line Fair in nearby Prairie Grove for you who like downhome collectibles.

A little plug if I may, a new Thai restaurant on W Huntsville in Spdle, E-San, the best of genuine Thai-Lao offerings. Try the coconut soup and papaya salad. mod $. Most servings are large enough for two.
.

Okay, Auburn is playing K-State Saturday and we are playing Troy State. Who do you think will be better prepared for UA-AU???

Pert near the only time I was ever carded was at Maxine's on my 21st bday. I had been a "regular" since my Freshman year, even though I was still able to get into the Ozark for the price of a 12 year old (I was a popular date). I wanted my "free" beer and Maxine came to the table. She looked me square in the eyes and said, "It's about time you were honest with me. Pay for your own beer." I think I grew up a lot that night. Maxine was the best of the best, as were Bill and Lil Tichnor.
