Landfill deferral
At the request of BFI, the waste disposal company's request to expand its Southwest Little Rock dump was deferred today by the Pulaski County Regional Solid Waste Management District. Opponents of the expansion wanted a final vote and said rules required one, but still seemed upbeat about events.
An opponent who was there said BFI appears to indicate it expects to lose this battle and needs time to assess the cost of striking deals with other landfill operators to handle waste BFI intended to haul to its expanded landfill. New information today included a report from the district's staff that indicate there's sufficient landfill capacity in the county without the expansion.
The Board will meet Nov. 1 on the request. Mayor Mark Stodola reiterated today that he opposed the expansion. City approval would be necessary even if the solid waste board approved it.
