The college report

Hendrix College has joined a group of some 60 colleges nationwide in saying fie on the U.S. News and World Report college ranking. I'm with them. There's a strong popularity contest element. The categories are broken down in such a way that just about everybody can claim something or another. I've stopped reporting on the results precisely because I don't place much stock in them, though colleges live and die by them.

If you want to gripe at U.S. News about it, you can do it in person. The magazine editor, Brian Kelly, is due to speak at the Clinton School on the rating system Tuesday. Dean Skip Rutherford defends it on the Clinton School blog. Apparently at least one faculty member there shares my misgivings.

What do you suggest as a substitute for selecting a college/univ Max?

Hey, but Dude, which one's the party school? That's what we want to know.

"Dean Skip Rutherford defends it on the Clinton School blog."

This is the first blog I've ever seen that doesn't allow reader comments. One person's "blog" is another person's "organized list of of unused press release text."
