Unfiltered: Another candidate Q&A
I submitted a round of questions to Little Rock School Board member Michael Daugherty, who faces opposition for re-election from Anna Swaim and, if he gets his filing worked out by Monday, Drew Pritt. Verbatim:
Q: Care to comment on your announced opponent?
A: It would be unfair for me to comment on someone I’m not familiar with. I will say I have the utmost respect for anyone who offers his/her time and dignity to serve the public in the capacity of school board member. The school board is one of the most challenging positions any public servant could undertake when the only reward you get is knowing you have been of service to others.
Q: Will you participate in candidate forums if they are held?
A: Yes! Candidate forums are especially intriguing to me when they are conducted by people of good character and allow for civility among participants. Properly conducted forums provide an opportunity for people of interest to ask relevant questions and get comparative answers.
Q: Do you have a response to reports about an inaccurate personal resume and testimony about your educational background in the past?
A: I’ve often thought of challenging this openly but in order to do so would require me to provide transcripts to individuals of questionable character and I am uncomfortable with that. Finally, after considerable consideration and with the knowledge that providing the information to those who had already made up their minds about me then asked the question whether I needed them to validate me. I chose not to. It is without question those who think I do not require validation, no explanation is necessary. And for those who do, no explanation will suffice. If you’ll remember, I was told who I was or was not. I was never asked.
Q: Do you support the new WLR School? For what grades?
A: Yes, for grades k4-5. I think the best testimony for the need for the WLR School came from Dr. Linda Watson in her interview for the interim superintendent’s position. She also demonstrated a definite need for building a school in WLR and provided data to indicate this is necessary to help in our efforts to relieve the overcrowding at Fulbright, Jefferson, and Terry Elementary.
Q: Is Central High School on your radar in any way? Specifically, do you think the principal should be replaced?
A: I have been made aware of some concerns at Central High in the last several months. I do believe the issues are something that can be and should be addressed by the incoming administration. I would support the recommendation of the superintendent to the board.
Q: What do you say to those who think John Walker has too much influence over the School Board?
A: People who do not like Mr. Walker can find every reason to attack him covertly. They speak of the more than two decades of federal court involvement. Yet they fail to see the other side of the issue. Mr. Walker filed suit in court several years ago and if his case had no merit it would have been summarily dismissed from the onset. The LRSD kept itself in court by failing to comply with the court’s orders. It’s only now that LRSD, because of incentives from the State, has decided to work to comply with all of the court’s requirements. Can anyone argue the idea that we are much better suited to deal with the edicts of No Child Left Behind because of our court supervision and the fact we already had most of the necessary programs in place, than we would have been otherwise? Also, every child in the LRSD has benefited in some way from the actions of Mr. Walker and the Joshua Intervenors. Be it the creation of magnet and incentive schools to the hiring of literacy and math coaches, all of our students have benefited.
Q: Do you think the race of a candidate is important in making a decision in a LR school board election?
A: I hope this is a rhetorical question. However, in the last election two African-Americans were elected to the board that joined two other sitting board members who represent the poorer and underserved parts of the City of Little Rock. They demanded more accountability from the current administration and have been challenged at every turn by supporters of the chief administrator. I do believe the actions of certain members of this group of supporters have been reckless in their attempts to control board actions through the filing of frivolous lawsuits and have limited the board’s effort to achieve that accountability. This leaves me with the conclusion that what is being challenged other than whether the LR CTA has a right to exist is, whether community oriented African-Americans can provide leadership and make rational decisions when representing their zones if they vote similarly and in a majority.
Straight answers -- well, with one exception -- from another LRSD parent and long-time Board member.

Funny thing about his answer is that he assumes everyone has already taken sides. I doubt it is true. I still have an open mind about it but am rapidly deciding not to trust a politician who can't disprove accusations.

Please list other jobs where you don't have to submit educational and previous jobs in your resume. I have an open mind, but please, Mr Daugherty, get your information out there quickly, or doubts will begin to grow.

What's up with this recent mentioning of firing Central's principle? Where did that come from?
As best I can remember, that woman has had glowing recommendations for years. Curious, to say the least.
ARK. BLOG: I think it's safe, first, to say that there are few high school principals that don't inspire strong feelings one way or another. Central's current principal is a take-charge type and those types can often inspire emotional responses. But beyond that, Central has become symbolic in many ways, most of them racial. I think it is fair to say that there are a number of black people who place perceived shortcomings at Central -- particuarly that oft-expressed notion of "two Centrals" -- at the feet of the white principal. I don't share those views. I think Nancy Rousseau is a good principal. And I fear that the criticism of the principal is actually a pretext on the part of some critics to tear down what, on balance, is a fine high school. But I'm one of those "elites" who had a good experience with two children who are Central graduates. (Notwithstanding the fact that my son went round and round with Mrs. Rousseau over a fairly stupid backpack policy.)

Q: "Do you have a response to reports about an inaccurate personal resume and testimony about your educational background in the past?"

Was this answer composed from the contents of a paper shredder? It is evasive to the point sounding schizophrenic.

So, Max, does that make you an "individual of questionable character"?
(And I hope he never has to submit that paragraph to scoring for the essay portion on the SAT...)
ARK. BLOG: You are free to draw that conclusion. As Groucho said, I wouldn't join any club that would have me as a member.

Well gang Max has determined I am not a "credible candidate" so I shall use this comment page to address these questions. Yes I am not the John Walker candidate nor the supposed Chamber candidate, but I am a candidate just the same, and one who is credibly looking at addressing a true problem. Maybe if we stopped trying to determine credibility and focused more on solutions we wouldn't be in the mess we are in.
Pat Lynch interviewed me today and you can hear my interview online at : http://lyncho.com/PRITT080207.mp3
To Max's credit he told me this himself and well thats his call though I think Election Day he will be eating crow.
Q: Care to comment on your announced opponent?
A: Michael Daugherty is the incumbent and he has had a chance to be tested and quite frankly been found wanting. Some of his supporters and he are playing the race card. Is it fair for me as a member of the GLBT Community to play the orientation card? Should my other opponent play the gender card? No, it's ridiculous and it has no merit in this race whether that issue looms or not, we are buying into the fear and the loathing rather than trying to overcome it.
Anna Swaim has an impressive resume and she supposedly has money and a machine. Well that doesn't mean much more to me than more of the same and more of the problem. Her announcement doesn't address any real issues or solutions to any of the problems.
Q: Will you participate in candidate forums if they are held?
A: Yes! Plato I believe once said Democracy is a hungry beast that must be constantly fed. Voter apathy exists because politicians avoid door to door and candidate forums while focusing on the money chase. True leadership is listening as much as speaking.
Q: Do you have a response to reports about an inaccurate personal resume and testimony about your educational background in the past?
A: Michael Daugherty should set the example and come forward. There should be a transparency in all of our elected offices. I equally will state here that there have been in the past questions about my sexual orientation (I am gay), bad checks from when I was a young and more immature person (they have been paid off), as well as recent disputes with AdCraft. The answer is no I have not paid AdCraft and will not because it submitted as documentation materials they did not produce nor have they produced credible evidence of me ever agreeing to these phantom contracts for work that never was performed!
Q: Do you support the new WLR School? For what grades?
A: YES! I support a PreK-12th set of schools. Children should be able to attend the nearest possible school and preferably in their neighborhood. The demand is growing and we need to have kids in the classrooms or in their homes, not on the buses!
Q: Is Central High School on your radar in any way? Specifically, do you think the principal should be replaced?
A: Central High School is on my radar. With the 50th Anniversary approaching it should be a significant event in which its on everyone's radar. I do not think the Principal should be replaced at all.
Q: What do you say to those who think John Walker has too much influence over the School Board?
A: John Walker doesn't have too much influence over me. If I am elected to the School Board, I will listen to John Walker as politely as I would Warren Stephens. In the end, I will listen more to the students, teachers, parents, and residents of Zone # 2 in regards to their schools and the issues facing the school board. My election truly means that there will be a swing vote. One faction will have three votes and the other will have three votes. This means I will be the Unbought and Unbossed seat on the Little Rock School Board. I will vote accordingly with what is in the best interest of LR School District students and teachers and parents, not the special interests!
Q: Do you think the race of a candidate is important in making a decision in a LR school board election?
Should sexual orientation or gender be a matter of importance? Officially when seeking a job or retaining a job thats not a factor. Reality of the situation is that some on either side are demagoguing this issue and the media in an attempt to make a "newsworthy issue" are stoking the flames. So yes it will be an issue but it shouldn't be an issue.
Dr. Martin Luther King, Jr. once said and I am basing my campaign on this principle : "Cowardice asks the question, 'Is it safe?' Expediency asks the question, 'Is it politic?' But conscience asks the question, 'Is it right?' And there comes a time when one must take a position that is neither safe, nor politic, nor popular but because conscience tells one it is right."
