A little nuance on Huckabee
Joe Klein (I know) writing on Time blog, assesses the Republican candidates on Iraq. For once, an analyst who thinks candidates should be striving for more than soundbites and one-liners on enormous policy questions. Re Huck:
The mini-debate between Ron Paul and Mike Huckabee was entertaining, but insubstantial. Paul is right on the merits, of course. (His answer on Iran, by the way, was eminently sane--the fact that Iran may someday build a nuclear device is a problem, but not an existential threat to the U.S., or Israel, for that matter. Any Iranian nuclear attack on Israel would also kill tens of thousands of Muslims and make the third most holy Islamic site--the Al Aksa mosque--uninhabitable.)
Huckabee's summoning of the Colin Powell Pottery Barn rule--you break it, you own it--was apt. We do owe the Iraqis something. Huckabee seemed to have no idea what we owed them, though...and he seemed far more concerned about America's honor than about the devastation in Iraq. He offered no way forward and has yet to show even the slightest bit of evidence that he understands the situation on the ground.

Pompous political asses, like Huck, who so eloquently and superciliously wrap this vicious war up in nice, digestible words about American honor and compassion for the Iraqis do themselves and the country a disservice. Plus they make me sick. If we really cared about the Iraqis, rather than just about fulfilling the neocon's wet dreams, we might have kept a running tally of Iraqi deaths (like our deaths) rather than ordering that no count be kept...like Rummy did. We might have eased some of the Iraqi refuge crisis by allowing more of the fleeing Iraqis into our country (we've taken in less than eight hundred). And we might have scraped some of the crumbs off Halliburton's table and given them to an Iraqi Halliburton (perhaps Chalabi qualifies). Iraqis have less of the day-to-day basics (water/electricity/medical care...piddly little stuff), live with more violence and then get to hear our politicians pontificate about American honor and lecture about American timetables and ungrateful Iraqis. I just don't understand why we haven't won the hearts of every Iraqi...much less the entire Middle East.

Zelda, you are so right. We just don't know how many Iraqis have died, how many have been wounded. We do know that their country has been destroyed civil war is a reality.
Bush does not give a shit about the Iraqis - his goal is to get the bling after he leaves office.
He doesn't care about our troops either. If he did he would bring them home and get them out of danger, all the while admitting that he fu**ed up.

If there weren't self-serving people like Huckabee throwing up what amounts to noise, we might be able to stop a minute and truly understand what America has done to the Iraqi people.
What America did under the rule of the criminal and incompetent Cheney neo-cons is take people already oppressed by years of Saddam's rule and make their miserable lives a living hell. Or in hundred of thousands of cases, we ENDED their miserable lives in the most brutal of ways to die.
According to two former CIA officers, President Bush was informed by George "Medal of Freedom" Tenet in October, 2002, BEFORE we attacked Iraq because of the lie that Saddam had WMD, that Saddam had NO WMD, NO WMD NO WMD. According to the CIA men, "The president had no interest in the intelligence," a CIA officer disclosed. "Bush didn't give a fuck about the intelligence. He had his mind made up."
So Americans.....America attacked Iraq and killed hundreds of thousands of people for NO REASON. We didn't break Iraq.....that's far to simple.....it's too innocent sounding. We RAPED, TORTURED and MURDERED hundreds of thousands of innocent people. Our leaders did it waving our flag, quoting the Bible, saying God was on our side because we're an honorable nation, our people are Christians, they always do the right thing. Though it was mostly Saudis piloting the planes and not one single person from the country of Iraq. We the people, were stupid enough to let Bush turn justifiable revenge against Osama into an indelible black mark on our souls.
The truth is, we can't do anything to make it up to the Iraqi people. We broke it past fixing. The only choice we have is staying with them and killing our young until we have no more or walk away and let the wolves do their dirty work, like leaving a sick pet in the woods. We can't fix Iraq and we can't make it up to Iraq and we'll never get the black mark off our souls. Jesus may save, but he's out to lunch on this one.
Ron Paul wants to walk away and sin no more. Huckabee cares nothing for the Iraqi people, but wants to save our honor.......honor of which we have none to save. Only people like Huckabee with nothing invested and nothing to lose want to stay the disastrous course. His willingness to save our honor with the blood of others is cowardly in the first degree. We've been cruel enough to the Iraqi people. It's time to stop this cruel game masking our greed and lust for Iraqi oil.
If we can not find our way to punishing the neo-cons who have brought lasting shame upon us all, at least let Iraq die in peace. We've fouled their soil long enough with our capitalistic stench. We've ruined the myth of America's greatness. Our very actions prove there is no God. We've done enough damage to the world. Bring our troops home to guard us from our home grown enemies. We've lost the War in Iraq, but we have a slim chance to win the War for America.

There's a lot we can do to help Iran, and screw Huckabuck. The first thing we can do is get some sane, talented people running the operations. That would be a 100% improvement. Throw out WPE's religiously chosen, inexperienced, dumb, and dumber program managers and get folks over there with competence and experience. If Huckabuck sees these religious mess-up messiahs Bush installed as changing over to worship him he will keep their incompetent asses.
Next step is that fav Republican cuss-word, diplomacy. Other nations around Irack are suffering because of the refugee overload. Over one million Iraqis with money and talent have fled. Now the poor are leaving and we in Ark know what it's like when one nation dumps their impoverished upon another nation. Diplomacy won't solve all the problems but it will help prevent needed workers from exiting.
Third step: Take all of Darth Cheney's appointees who remain after Jan 20, 08 outside and shoot them. Frame Darth for it.
