Flying Nutt

Those wacky souls who frequent the Razorback message boards are at it again. This time, the anti-Houston Nutt contingent has started passing the online pot to fund planes towing anti-Nutt banners to fly before and during future Razorback football games.

The group has already raised enough money to put a plane in the air over this weekend’s North Texas game in Fayetteville. This weekend’s banner will reportedly read: “PLAYERS & FANS DESERVE BETTER – FIRE NUTT!” with other, more comical banners to come if fans are able to raise enough money to put the plane up for other games.

Here's more information and a link to the electronic offering plate.

"..passing the online pot "

Really getting high off the idea eh?
.

Banner #2 idea:
With so many Nutts and Dicks it's no wonder things are all screwed up!

Some people have waay to much money. How about using that cash for something that reaaly matters like feeding the hungry. Hell, I missed lunch today. I'd only need a fiver to stop that rumbling.

upon editing number 2 should read:

With Nutts & Dicks of course we're #&*ed.

Disclaimer: I like Casey Dick. That was just for fun. Shouldn't get on him on banners. Just coaches.

We should raise money for the African American high school girl at Central High that takes the AP classes and was featured near the end of the documentary on HBO last night. She's my new hero. Her and her mom. She could use the money more than these sports nutjobs.

an ignorant way to spend money. if you want a new coach then wait until the end of the season and fire him.

kind of off topic but related. Does anyone else think this guy Rick Schaeffer is a complete apologist for the U of A and you just want to shake him and scream in his face. I refer back to my Drive Time Sports listening this past week, which i like to do every now and then after a loss. Very entertaining in that sad, yet oh-so-funny, I can't believe these are real calls and real answers kind of way. I recommend it.

"an ignorant way to spend money. if you want a new coach then wait until the end of the season and fire him."

What a laughably uninformed comment.

Yeah, fans, why not just go ahead and fire Nutt after the season?

...and Dick was inserted after Johnson was pulled a couple of seasons back.

Don't be too quick to send in money, the banner will never fly due to homeland security regulations.
Banner towing is now prohibited over "large outdoor gatherings" which include sporting events, racetracks, state & county fairs, festivals, etc. Hundreds of banner tow businesses have been grounded by HSA & FAA due to the Bush administration lest some terrorist group spray anthrax, ebola virus, nerve gas or other nefarius substances over crowds having a good time. You might be able to fly over the deer woods on opening day out in the boonies, but what would be the point & you might end up getting shot down by the gun Nutts or their kinfolk.

"homeland security"

Never did like that title...too German/Soviet government for me to accept.

Actually, it was a little prick that was inserted after a Johnson was pulled out... only to be replaced by an older Dick.
But, I digress. Back to the real world.

Did the AT Blog condemn Moveon.org as a bunch of wackos after they used the same tactic (public shame) against a similar foe (entrenched establishment)?

In a guerrilla war, the media is as much a consumer of the message as the proletariat. Here you've passed on the message to many that will never get to see the banner in person. Thanks for helping out!

If the AT is looking for a sports story more along its strengths of muchracking and personal vendettas, you should see what Danny Nutt and his bleeding brainstem have been doing this season.

The flight will take place for about 45 minutes from 1:45pm to 2:30pm. The plane and banner pilot is booked after that.

FYI: FAA 9-11 regs only require that planes be clear one hour from kickoff.

http://www.razorbacktalk.com (Razorback message forum) has all the details and a poll where you can vote for what the next banner will read.

Thanks, ironfortified, for conflating a spat over a football coach with the debacle that is the war in Iraq.

In fact, if the general Joe Fan got anywhere near as worked up over the way the White House is running their game as they do over how their particular football team's coaches are doing, Bush, Cheney et al would be not only fired, but under lock, key and armed guard awaiting trial on a long list of crimes.

But hey, if it's important to you to show your ass over a silly game, Karl Rove wins again.

I'm not comparing the Nutt situation with Iraq. Football is much too important for that.

So please, continue using both houses of congress (which Democrats control) to do nothing about the situation in Iraq. You guys are doing a heckuva job.

So WILL the plane fly over or not? How much you figure it'd cost to get a little advertisement banner, wagging back there behind the big banner?

I wonder if those flying the banner have considered how it will impact team morale. I imagine they have, and have concluded that getting a new coach to enhance the underclassmen's success is worth the price.

There is no connection to what follows, except typing the preceding sentences made me think of it:

I wonder if those protesting the war in Iraq, declaring it impossible to "win" and seeking a timetable for withdrawal have considered the possible impact on the morale of soldiers serving there. I imagine they have, and have concluded that getting those soldiers home alive and well and restoring their families is worth the price.

Please be assured I don't compare or confuse sports with war. I just thought comparing the concepts of bitter medicine now for better days later was interesting.

Why such hatefulness on a sports thread? I am not a Nutt fan. He has been controlled by Saint Frank. I am now seeing the same formations I saw thirty years ago. Run right, run left, run up the middle, punt. Pass occasionally. Saint Frank has said that the only way to win in the SEC is to run the ball. Well, I am certainly not an armchair quarterback, but I can recognize that without a balanced offense, passing and running, you won't have a winning team in the SEC. After two losses, McFadden is now out of Heisman consideration. How sad for this talented athlete. Who or what is to blame? A virus? A concussion? Nutt's play calling? David Lee? If the head coach over rules the offensive coach, ties the hands of the defensive coach, then how will there be a win against a SEC team? Nutt can hire all the incredible folks he wants to, but, until he lets go of the control, quits blaming the assistants, my Razorbacks will continue to be a mediocre team. I love my Razorbacks. Why aren't they succeeding ?

Marcus Monk.

How many times has he caught the fade in the red zone? Think he's worth three points against Alabma? Think Nutt calls more passes if he's in? Think he brings more early scoring against Kentucky? Think it's the head coach's fault if you only have one of him (even as a Nutt fan, I do.)

Let's see, against Alabama Nutt was wrong for not laying down and giving up any attempt to get the 3-and-12 first down with a rollout pass that was to be a run if the receiver wasn't open -- wrong for no plunge into the line. Now he's wrong for too many plunges into the line.

Until the players he has (and I know, he recruited them; he's accountable) can throw and catch a decent percentage of the passes they do throw, why are folk clamoring for more?

Oh, and Nutt gets **none** of the credit for featuring McFadden and utilzing him in a way that he enters the season as a Heisman favorite, and *all* of the blame when his campaign falters despite superhuman efforts by Darren.

TAP,
Don't you think McFadden and Jones would be able to do more if there were a decent , or occasional, passing game as a diversion for the running game? My apologies for disagreeing about the necessity of establishing a passing game. "Decent" won't work to free up McFadden and Jones, in my humble opinion.

Houston, we have a problem!

------------------------------------
Yes, Curious, I do believe a better passing game would free McFadden and Jones to run more. I recall in the bowl last year, after Dick and Mustain misfired horribly on passes, the announcer saying (and I paraphrase only a little), "It's a shame -- if they had quarterbacks good enough to be called awful they could really be good." I don't think that was play-calling.

I think when Houston has a QB who can throw like Stoerner and a receiver who can catch like Lucas, he'll call plays like he did his first couple of years. Is it his fault for not recruiting those guys? Certainly. Was Mustain such a QB? Perhaps, but he showed no sign of it in his freshman year. (BTW, I wish him the greatest of success at USC).

Does a freshman need time to develop? Certainly, but as the OU freshman Sam Bradford is demonstrating, some do it the first year.

As for this year, I think 450-500 yards of total offense a league game ought to be enough to win, and a passing yard counts no more than a running yard. I think Monk is a drive-finisher, and they miss him.

I think I'm no football expert, so there is no need to apologize for disagreeing with me! There's no reason to think I know what I'm talking about.

I think that, unlike the Hogbloggers, I get no joy out of arguing, especially with folk I like and enjoy as much as you Curious. (that goes for Cato, eLwood, Gaddis BigFan, etc.).

I should probably leave the sports threads alone.

Peace, always

TAP

Maybe you should leave them alone....as should I.

Nutt is the problem on the hill. He plays not to lose. There is a big difference in playing to win.

As for Monk....one receiver does not make a team. At least he shouldn't. Monk has a tendency to drop passes just as the other guys do.

Mustain is being highly praised at USC for his work on the prep team where it is said he is picking the defense apart in practice. He needed a coach. Not a new place to play.

"As for this year, I think 450-500 yards of total offense a league game ought to be enough to win, and a passing yard counts no more than a running yard."

Apparently not..... One would think that if you can run all over the field....up and down...that you could stick the ball in the end zone. The reason we can't is not due to the lack of one player...it is misuse of the ones we have on the field.

Again....coaching.

"I think Monk is a drive-finisher, and they miss him."

Nutt is using Monk as his excuse.....let's talk again once Monk is back. Bet there is a new excuse.

I enjoy the discourse.....I love the hogs and until the last few years I have found them to be a good distraction from all the really serious stuff in life.

Basketball and football.....loved them....oh look what they have done to destroy my team. Egos....

Have a nice day folks!

Do they still play sports up in the NW corner of the state?

I couldn't care less.

BIGFAN, you may be right. Maybe I can't see past the friend (then) I played with at LRCHS. But I don't think it takes a Nutt fan to realize this:

Flying around with a FIRE NUTT banner on a day when invited or uninvited recruits may be in the stands (1) is very self-indulgent, when a letter writing campaign would do about as much good, maybe more; (2) creates a highlight reel for opposing recruiters; and (3) seems more about venting their anger/frustration than helping the University, even if they are 100% correct.

There were about 25 potential recruits in the stands last Saturday when Hog fans began booing their own team and coach. That didn't do anybody any good.

Yawn!

UAF is a mid-sized school in a large conference and regardless of a Heisman candidate UAF will usually end up losing as many as UAF wins.

What's the banner going to say. "We're a very powerful booster that Nutt and Broyles banned because we kept repeatedly trying to violate NCAA rules, and we've been out to get him ever since?"

"Flying around with a FIRE NUTT banner on a day when invited or uninvited recruits may be in the stands (1) is very self-indulgent, when a letter writing campaign would do about as much good, maybe more; (2) creates a highlight reel for opposing recruiters; and (3) seems more about venting their anger/frustration than helping the University, even if they are 100% correct. "

TAP you are exactly right. It baffles me how people who purport to be Razorback fans would do something that so clearly undermines the entire football program. Everyone is entitled to their opinion about Nutt, but just think about how that will completely take the legs out from under our recruiting efforts. I've got some doubts about HDN, just like a lot of avid Hog fans, but this is not the way to express that opinion.

As much as I want to see a coaching change....I can't support this move.

The program is a laughing stock around the country now...we don't need this extra attention.

Go Hogs!

Thank you, TAP. Your posts often make me think, re-think, search my convictions to decide if I want to continue in the same thought patterns and behaviors or do I need to change. I thank you for that.

Nutt is gone. He'll announce his new job at or near the end of the season. He knows the new AD is not his daddy. TAP, DMitch and Curious are right about this stunt just hurting recruiting. What's even worse is that "fans" were throwing stuff at Houston's kids sitting behind the bench with some recruits. I asked how anybody knew they were little Nutt's and was told that three of them go to school at the U and all of their pictures are in the media guide. It's going to take a while for the program to recover, and we'll never have the money to buy and keep a great coach--see basketball.

I hope the Danny Nutt thing isn't investigated because it will hurt us more. He was sanctioned by the SEC for roaming the sideline Saturday night in coach clothes, wearing a headset. The serious crime is that he's still drawing his $157,000 salary three months after he resigned.

I feel sick!

I gassed up this morning. Loaded my camera and camcorder, and was past Mountainburg when I got a call on my cellphone from the banner company at 12:39. He asked how I was doing and I said fine and that I was on my way to see the banner fly.

Then he said there was a slight problem with the banner. He told me that he called the pilot to make sure everything was ok and was told that the banner was ripped in half while en route from Missouri!!

I asked if it could be repaired and flown ASAP and he said no, it was ruined, but that he would either refund the $ or do the Auburn game with the funds already sent to him. I told him that I would have to contact the contributors and see what they wanted to do, but that this has put me in a very bad situation. People are EXPECTING to see it and now it's not going to happen today.

He apologized repeatedly and said the company would make it right. He added that this has never happened to him before.

I'm so mad right now I can't see straight.

I'm no conspiracy theorist, but... I gotta wonder what's going on here.

I'm now going about the process of contacting contributors and finding out if they want the rescheduled flight to take place at the Chattanooga game in Little Rock or the Auburn game in Fayetteville.

I'm also going to see if the banner company can take a picture of the ripped banner, so I can see what happened to it.

My apologies to those who made special arraignments to see it fly today.

Best regards,

Reaganite
