Guilty Plea in Maumelle Hate Crime
Shawn Hardin, a Maumelle woman indicted by the federal government earlier this year after she sent a racially-tinged threat to her neighbors, pleaded guilty yesterday of a civil rights violation. The charge, Criminal Interference with Right to Fair Housing, carries a maximum sentence of a $100,000 fine and a year in jail. A second charge of sending a threatening communication through the mail was dropped. A sentencing hearing has yet to be scheduled.

Has she not heard of Fair Housing? Well, I guess she is now the poster child for Welcome Wagon.

I can't believe the insane high priced penality on such a crime. There're wrost crimes being commited everyday and they don't carry a penality like this.

It would have been hard for her to have pled not guilty in the face of the damning piece of paper in her own handwriting. By now she must be finding it hard to get any support. I wonder if she can even be seen on the streets without jeers and pointing. Good enough for her, and a good enough lesson for those like her, if they will but learn it.
I had a grandmother and a mother that frowned and tsk-tsked whenever they heard the word "hate". They taught me from early childhood not to hate. I hope that lesson sticks with me until the end of time.

Obviously my reaction is probably tinged by my skin color, but I think I'm as disturbed that the letter writer, offensive as her comments are, could be considered guilty of a federal crime as I am that she would spew such venom.
The Terrys were rightly offended. Had I been in their place, I would have called the police also, but to make certain that Ms. Hardin knew that she was to refrain from any contact with my family.
I can see no threat in her note and to pursue federal charges because she mention the word "house" seems to me to be overkill.
As law abiding as I generally consider myself, it truly sounds like I could have been prosecuted for a similar incident. A number of years ago, two young men rented a nearby house. Within days, they got on my bad side by posting a graphic sign on my corner post along road frontage. I yanked it down and stalked over to return it and laid a few choice words on them about displaying the sexually oriented content. Some time later, I caught them grocery shopping in the freezer in my (never again unlocked) utility room. In addition to calling the police, I called their landlord to complain about them. In the course of the latter conversation, I did raise the sign issue and discuss the young men's sexual orientation. By doing so, no doubt I was interfering with their housing rights, and far more than Ms. Hardin appears to have done.
Ms. Hardin acted like an ignorant fool -- no doubt. But why do we waste time and money prosecuting ignorant, but apparently relatively harmless, fools on federal charges?
(And I can't believe I agree with chasv . . .)

Ignorance is no excuse to let her off. Sometimes out of ignorance comes examples for others. and ignorance can come with a high price. I have no sympathy for her, because this isn't the first time, she's been ignorant, but this is the time she will pay for it.

Naw, you would have been in the clear, Doigotta, cause homosexuals have no rights, haven't you heard? Everybody's got to have somebody they can look down on and discriminate against and apparently the gay folks are all alone on that bottom rung now. And it looks like folks like it that way in Arkieland just fine.

Chasv--just a question: How harsh would you consider this punishment to be if the tables were turned. What if a black family moved into a white neighborhood and left a threatening message in their mailbox that told them to keep their "white asses" in their house and made specific references to their children, using such words as "whitie" and "albino." Frankly the language I used was no less offensive than the type of language this woman used against these people. I think you'd probably be singing a different tune then, wouldn't ya. Jeez, Chasv...that's mighty white of ya...

chasv, again I would like to direct your attention to late night AETN schedules. There's many wonderful adult education classes offered on late night AETN plus you can set your TV recorder in case you don't stay awake that late. There's great one hour classes on sociology, economics, and grammar too. Give it a try.

What an out of touch, insensitive moron. Right out of the 1950s. There's no ignorance like stubborn, self-afflicted ignorance.
ARK. BLOG: Are you the guy who said "stuck pig squeals" is an inappropriate response (even to a bellow of unspecific outrage at carefully reasoned and supported points of view with which the squealer happens to disagree)?

Yes, Americans more than other humans in industrialized world have a strange need to create boogey men. I think J.Edgar Hoover had something to do with it.
To counter your point that gays are the preferred target, ain't nobody getting more hate than illegal immigrants at present.
"The city of Rogers received on Tuesday a memorandum of agreement from the U.S. Immigration and Customs Enforcement 287(g) program.
The announcement was made by Mayor Steve Womack during an 11 a.m. news conference at the Rogers City Hall Wednesday."
Rogers will not be a refugee city. Wonder what Jesus would say?

All who think that I am off center here will have to stand before God and give your account of what you say.... Every word you say will have to be accounted for at that judgement.
You like me must think before you speak.
eLwood you drink too much cool-aid. You are silly funny... I got way more to do that to watch aetn and I don't support that station anyway.
HEY folks It doesn't matter if I have colored people, as a matter of fact I have colored neighbors, to yell at me I am not going to file a complaint against them. Damn it, I believe in free speech and threats are nothing till it is acted on..... If my neighbor is Perturbed at me we'll work it out and nobody else needs to stick their nose in it. Although we don't have any reason to be perturbed.
My grandson was elected captain of the football team and walked a pretty colored girl and kissed her on her cheek today during the ceremony and we are pleased he and she were elected for that joy.
They won the game tonight, too.
I think anyone who is offended by any accusations must be in need of a head shrink.
There's an old saying, stick and stones may break my bones but words will never hurt me.
Also if you are offended by what people say about you or to you you got to be mentally disturbed, especially if you know it is not true!
A man worst enemies are those of his own household, the bible said.
I say it is not your enemies that you should worry about it is your friends that you need to worry about.
I got to repeat it is a sin to have pride. I don't care if you are white or black pride will kill you. It will cause you lose friends and make you sick. Pride is an abomination!

chasv, I know you don't cotton to AETN, but do you remember the old Saturday Night Live show? Not the current poor excuse for the production that goes by the same name, but the one way back there, the one that was REALLY funny! Well, dude, you could be the star on that 'un. It's not so much what you say as HOW you say it that just cracks me up. Every time. Congrats to the grandson! It was good of him to kiss the colored girl right out there in front of God 'n everbody, and somewhat promising that you approved.

I suspect that chasv falls into the age group of people I give a pass to when it comes to race relations. I don't mean I think it's OK, or cool and I sure don't excuse them from taking shots at "colored people." But older people are most often the product of the environment of their childhood. My grandfather's generation wasn't polite enough to say colored when discussing black folks. I suspect chasv, in his own way, has come a long way.
A woman named Shawn with kids young enough to play in the yard wasn't born in 1927. Unless she was raised by the KKK, there is no excuse for her thinking or letters. Shawn gets no pass. On the other hand, in my opinion this case has dragged out too long and received way too much attention. The court's action borders on Thought Police. Hardin wrote ugly stuff, she didn't attack anyone with a club, gun or knife. If she had written I WILL CILL YOU ALLS......without actions....is that really worth $100,000 fine and a year in jail? How does this compare to the punishment Scooter got? Scooter!
If I drink 3 beers and get caught driving home, I see a jail cell an hour later. This woman should have been picked up and jailed and given a ticket good for a $500 fine and later her neighbors could have quietly delivered a good ass beating, when no one was looking. America would be a better place the next day without wasting our beautiful minds. Thought Police might be worse than racism if we let it out of the bag. Be careful!

Oh DBI, you had me at Scooter. Oh, Scooter!
I think we put waaay too much emphasis on race. We make it out to be such a huge issue until it has some sort of creepy power over us. Actually, I take that back. We make it out to be such a huge issue until someone comes along, rubs their hands in glee, and uses it to have some sort of creepy power over us.
I guess it could be worse. We could be Jena, Louisiana.

Racism is still alive and well! This has nothing to do with free speech! When free speech negatively impacts the quality of life of others; it's no longer FREE. And, if it is free; free to whom?
African Americans live with this each and every day!! Every day, when I go outside and face the world; I am faced with this type of ignorance. On the other hand...I must say; there is often a "little" truth to every bias! Even as an African American (Black, etc...) I would not want to live in an all black neighborhood. I live in Maumelle, in a section with very FEW blacks; due to my economic status. Even I get a little "brothered" when I see other blacks move into the neighborhood. We had a black family move in; now you "hear" them coming down the street playing loud music; they don't keep the yard cut; and there's been a few times on the weekend there were several cars parked in and around their house with "friends" from the hood.
However, the bottomline is this; we're all bias - that's natural. It's what you do (or say) re the bias (when it crosses the line on someone's eles quality of life) that get people in trouble. I'm bias; that's my business. However, i will not allow my bias impact the way I treat another person.

I hope that your trust doesn't lie in being in a white neighborhood. I wsh you could understand that your economic status doesn't always make you acceptable. Do you wonder, are you accepted because you are actually liked are because you drive a nice car, wear nice clothes and live in a nice neighorhood? It didn't seem to help the Terrys. You are nothing more than a "ghetto snob".
