Rough day

Gorgeous, yes. As someone suggested \I should do, I visited the Cliffs of Moher. I also left $110 Euro with John Considine's mobile tire shoppe after I obliterated my front left tire on a curb in the parking lot, while overcompensating in the wrong-side driving here.
It was only two hours after we'd deplaned at Shannon, not an auspicious start. But I've only hit one more curb so far, and the tire held. Could have been worse. I could have been watching the Hogs play Kentucky.
The Internet service is not splendid here in Westport on the Bay of Clew, so I'm going to leave off posting with this. The eating is good -- as with this combo plate of open-faced crab and smoked salmon sandwiches in a fine pub. Yes, there's a Guinness nearby. Or maybe a Smithwick ale. Consider this an open line. The staff will be getting back to news Monday. But fill in for us here, if you have anything to offer. Thanks.

After Delta State defeated Henderson State 9-7 in Cleveland, Miss., Sept. 15, the coaches met at mid-field. Rather than the usual congratulatory stuff, the Henderson coach said, "Not bad for a bunch of guys with no talent, huh?" The Delta State coach said, "What are you talking about?" The Henderson coach said, "That's what you said in the paper." The Delta State coach said, "I never said that." The Henderson coach said, "Yes you did, I saw it right there in the paper."
Soon the coaches' spat escalated, then spread to the players, and next thing you know a totally out of control, good ole-fashioned slugfest and ass kickin' among dozens of players had broken out. Both coaches were suspended by their conference from being present at their school's next game and apologies flew from embarrassed administrations at both schools.
Well, thank God there are never any misunderstandings like that on the many threads of the Arkansas Blog! I guess that's because nobody here has ever read (or thought they read) a comment they found offensive but, truth be known, was not intended by the writer to be that way. And certainly, nobody here has ever knee-jerked and responded heatedly to a perceived offense. And that's a good thing, because it would be terrible if it happened and Max had to suspend us from the blog for a week or whatever.
Let's keep up our good record, gang. May misunderstandings and verbal slugfests NEVER occur on these hallowed threads!

Max,, you didn't say if the curb incidents were Guinness related. By that I mean, perhaps you didn't have enough of them at that point, to steady the hand and focus the concentration for the wrong side driving.Sheesh. Be careful out there.
I imagine we'll see alot of Houston Nutt entries here in the days to come.

At my name is a complete listing of this weeks upcoming Congressional Committee Hearings and the respective web links for audio/video or cspan..
As always Glenn Greenwald is a must read today:
Congress will likely pass legislation retroactively immunizing telecom lawbreakers and Regime officials, so they will never end up in court.
snip
The idea of granting blanket retroactive amnesty for private companies and high government officials who repeatedly broke the law in how they spied on Americans is the stuff of tin-pot third-world dictatorships. It is so corrupt and reprehensible that it ought to be beyond the ken of what could even be considered. But with an indescribably (and increasingly) accommodating Democratic Congress, along with Democratic power brokers like Gorelick working in tandem with telecoms and their Republican lobbyists to bring about such legislation, its passage - as both the NYT and Newsweek are reporting - is close to guaranteed.

In an article on Feinstein Greenwald had this to say about Demo Congress: "It really is one of the most extraordinary -- and downright embarrassing -- political facts that more Republicans than Democrats approve of the 2007 Democratic Congress. And why wouldn't they? The Democratic Congress has not restrained the Leader at all, but has done much to support and empower him. The Democratic Congress -- especially the Senate -- is controlled by the likes of Dianne Feinstein, and what Bush supporter wouldn't be satisfied with the role she is playing? "
I'm supporting and voting Rebekkah Kennedy for U.S. Senate.

If I was you, Max, I'd send for my things, clear out my checking and savings account by remote control and stay in Ireland for the rest of time. No one's mad at the Irish today, their economy is booming, the Protestants are laying down with the Catholics. Best of all, there is no Houston Nutt, George W. Bush or Dick Cheney over there. Sure, ya might have to gut Irish chickens for a while and be looked down on by your good Irish neighbors. But......
It's just getting too damn depressing and dangerous to be an American any more. Every day worst news comes out. We hear more ways Cheney-Bush have FK'ed us, others and up. The weaker the Democrats appear in Congress. More US jobs lost, more dead US troops, more secret scary shit out of Blackwater USA, Halliburton. More top Generals conspiring with Cheney to support our troops by allowing them to be slaughtered in a war we caused and cannot win.
We'll sure miss you, Max. But like it must have been to watch a fellow prisoner of war escape a Nazi prison, we'll be happy in knowing you're out, safe, free....happy. Maybe if we survive all this, one day we could all come for a visit in your lovely thatched-roof cottage with a view of the Cliffs of Moher. Then you can take us and show us where John Wayne gave ole Maureen O'Hara that spankin in The Quiet Man......
Save yourself while you still can, Max. You'll be one of the first to be led off when it's Crystal Night for liberals in America. During the hours we have electricity we can www-up the Ireland Times Blog and see how you're doing and get some needed words of advice and encouragement. And don't forget to go forth and multiply so that one day Ireland can send a mighty force to rescue America and return it to the light side.
As the Irish say, May the saddest day of your future
But no worse than the happiest day of your past! Erin go braugh-less!

Max,
I strongly suggest you stay near the coasts. Ireland is a bowl with a ring of hills near the coast. The shore is dramatic eerywhere.
Inland is interesting but monotonous. 3 meter hedges all around so it is similar to driving down a tunnel with little gaps for a glimpse of the country.
If you wish to impress the locals let them know you personally know Bill Clinton. We all went to Irie for my brother's wedding to a freckled, green eyed, redhaired girl from Celbridge.
My sister is with Heifer Int'l and since the Clinton Library is right next door they thought a little note of congratulations from Clinton, whose Easter Accords pretty well ended the Catholic/Protestant fighting, would be a nice thing. Well it gets fax'd to the hotel where we all were staying in the middle of the night. Clinton was like a rick star over there.
The staff went nuts! During the night they drove it around to every employee's house that was not on duty so they could see it. They all made copies and then finally brought the frazzled and dogeared fax to my brohter. By lunch the next day they had a framed blowup mounted in the lobby.
We were no longer just some American tourists, we were dignitaries from Clinton's home state.
I wonder if they Irish would treat Max like dignitaries if they knew he was from a state next to ol' Sh/t for Brains' claimed home state!

One more reminder:
Markos Moulitsas, my favorite national political blogger and founder of the Daily Kos, is coming to Fayetteville on October 24th, speaking up on the UA campus at 7:00 p.m. in the J.B Hunt Building, across Dickson Street from the Greek Theater. It is free and open to the public.
Daily Kos, the most-read political blog in the world, has struck a nerve with millions of Americans and revitalized political awareness in this country.

Look out Arkansas. Old Mark Pryor will surely vote with Lieberman and Marks new buddy Norm Coleman (boy can Mark pick out some strange friends) again this week with S A 3017 coming up for a vote. Paving the way for attacks by us on Iran. (dkos post about it at my name)
<<<<<<<
Senate Resolution: use "military instruments" against Iran
The resolution - an amendment to a defense appropriations bill - is sponsored by Jon Kyl, Joseph Lieberman, Norm Coleman, and Lindsey Graham. It expresses the sense of the Senate that the U.S. should "combat, contain, and roll back" Iran's "violent activities and destabilizing influence inside Iraq." It counsels doing so "through the prudent and calibrated use of all instruments of [U.S. power], including diplomatic, economic, intelligence, and MILITARY INSTRUMENTS." It also urges the administration to designate the Revolutionary Guards a terrorist organization.
<<<<<<<
Military instruments means bombs! These senators are insane!

In 2008, Bush v. Gore Redux?
By BOB HERBERT
"The Presidential Election Reform Act is the name of a devious proposal that Republican operatives have dreamed up to siphon off 20 or more of the 55 electoral votes that the Democrats would get if, as expected, they win California in 2008.
That's a lot of electoral votes, the equivalent of winning the state of Ohio. If this proposed change makes it onto the ballot and becomes law, those 20 or so electoral votes could well be enough to hand the White House to a Republican candidate who loses the popular vote nationwide."
It ain't over till the fat lady sings, don't get cocky Dem's...'the fight has just begun!'

Wow, blue sky in Ireland..on my 10 day trip around the country, that was a rarity, so feel blessed Max! The Cliffs of Moher were particularly rainy and windy, but still so beautiful. Drink a pint of Guiness for us back here in the states! Sláinte!
