The LR Nine gala

Former President Clinton was in his element tonight at the Little Rock Nine Foundation Gala at the Peabody Hotel, singing every verse of "Lift Every Voice and Sing" along with the Central High Madrigal Singers and concluding the evening with an energetic, emphatic and heartfelt tribute to the Nine.

"Look at them," he said of the Nine, seated at the long head table with family and others. "Fifty years later and they are still here with us. We thank God for that." He thanked them for enriching his own life.

He then addressed what he called the "psychological drama at the heart" of strife in the Middle East and around the world.

"Why were those angry white people trying to keep those kids from going to school? Think about it," Clinton said. "The deal was, Arkansas was one of the poorest states in the nation for whites as well as blacks." And the poor whites needed someone to look down on. There is, Clinton said, a"desperate need to believe that somebody is inferior to us. That our differences matter, not our common humanity." Honor the Nine, he told the crowd, by finding common ground and working to make ours a "more perfect union."

Hillary Clinton was unable to introduce her husband as scheduled. She sent her greetings via emcee Gwen Ifill. Sen. Clinton is expected to be in town for Tuesday's commemorative event at Central High at 10 a.m.

Earlier, Carlotta Walls LaNier introduced the nine winners of college scholarships awarded by the Little Rock Nine Foundation, which has received major financial support from Coca-Cola. Commemorative Coke bottles bearing the logo of the 50th anniversary were given to all the guests.

An eight-minute film of the Little Rock Nine was the emotional highpoint of the night in the ballroom of the Peabody Hotel. The audience began to applaud as footage that combined photographs of the Nine as teen-agers and their introduction at the 40th anniversary of the desegregation of Central High began to roll, until the entire room was on their feet, many wiping away tears.

Thanks Leslie, I got chicken skin just reading along a thinking about it all.

Heckuva time to ask, but is there any kind of shuttle service available this morning? Where is everyone going to park?

I should have looked first:

Parking and Shuttle Information
Parking around Little Rock Central High School is limited. In addition, major streets leading into the area will be closed to traffic.

Free parking at the Arkansas State Fairgrounds (2401 West Roosevelt Road) and shuttle service will be provided. Shuttle service will begin at 8:00 a.m. After the event, the shuttles will continue back to the fairgrounds until 2:00 p.m. Those riding the shuttle MUST have a ticket for the dedication ceremony.

Wouldn't it be great to have a President like that again? Maybe soon.

"And the poor whites needed someone to look down on. "

Reminds me of an old Kristofferson song:

"Everybody's got to have somebody to look down on
Who they can feel better than at any time they please
Someone doing something dirty decent folks can frown on
If you can't find nobody else, then help yourself to me"

there was nothing great about his presidency!

Is there something great about the current president? Umm, I didn't think so! "You never miss you water until the well runs dry". The well, has been dry for a long time, at least since Clinton was out of office.

In your erudite opinion who was our last great president?

I think readers here would find it enlightening to know.
.

There is none great. There are those that are greater than others though.
We are all fat and all we do is sit on our donothings and give our nation to anyone who can cross out borders.
Bush has made me just a angry as anyone but the damn democrap party is stinking dead. We need another party to rise up to take the democrat's place. The scum in the dem party is brown as it can get.
