Gang bang
That headline is not my descriptive, but that of another blogger characterizing the pile-on that was last night's Democratic debate. Moderators and opponents both piled on front-runner Hillary Clinton. And, fair or unfair, she didn't help herself with answers that avoided simple declarations on several issues
So today, for better and for worse politically, she decided to back the driver's license bill for immigrants in New York. We long ago backed a similar measure here for many good reasons, including that fact that it encourages immigrant workers to get insurance.
She also picked up a big union endorsement. Will she get some sympathy for the gang attack? Or is Hillary simply disqualified from sympathy votes?
(The video is from the Clinton campaign.)

Comments
I thought Russert was unusually hard on her last night. And, yes, she did waffle a tad too much.

"Gang bang" LMAO ! You can tell Max grew up in the 60s.
"And, fair or unfair, she didn't help herself with answers that avoided simple declarations on several issues "
You of all people should know that what IS simple will be twisted beyond any resemblance of the original when Rudy, Mitt, or Ron Paul's spin meisters get down to ball-bustin...or help me out here Vegan...what do you call it for wimmin?
The other candidates were attempting to get Hillary to sign on to NY's Guv Spitzer's call for drivers lic for all immigrants who operate a vehicle. It's not a bad idea since I live in a virtual sanctuary city and have damn near been broadsided by a few Hispanics without lic plates on their vans and SUVs.
Without a drivers license they cannot obtain insurance. Which way do we want it?

How come you didn't disclose that Mrs. Rodham Clinton's staff made that video?
Also, what are your thoughts on her opponents, and even Tim Russert, challenging her on the library documents?
After all, you made no bones about chiding the state GOP for the same question.
ARK. BLOG: You are an idiot. Didn't you read the last sentence of the item that said clearly it was from the Clinton campaign?

Arkansas inbRed,
You mean the video that was posted by "hillaryclintondotcom", which has the big "Hillary for President" logo next to it? Is that the one you think needs explicitly credited to the Hilary Clinton campaign? Sure, why not--it's not like that's Sooper-Seekrit.

Somebody please correct me if I'm wrong on this but I'm under the impression that Hillary's White House papers as First Lady are under the control of the National Archives, who also have control of BC's papers as well and they, the National Archives, have so far refused to release any of them despite her requests and BC's requests for them to do so.
I would swear I read this in the media somewhere, maybe even on the blog.
Anyone, except Red, is welcome to correct me if I'm wrong.

If you step back and look things over, as much cussing and screaming as we've done towards Cheney-Bush and Fox News....well, we should reserve a little of that for the MSN. They play cat in mouse with deadly serious issues trying to stretch things out so we'll buy more papers and watch their TV shows so they can make more money.
In normal times that wouldn't be so bad, but in times like these....there are some things too serious to be part of ABC's marketing strategy. I had to thump on the NY Times today (yeah, I know how much I must have upset them) because of an opinion piece that heavily implied Kucinich was a nut because he was "arguing about U.F.O.s" in last night's debate.
What a stinking piece of crap! Anyone who was watching heard Tim Russert come out of the blue with a question for Kucinich about a quote in Shirley McClain's book. Like we need any wisdom from moonbat Shirley McClain! Kucinich tried to say that it was true, he did see a U.F.O a few years ago, but that all the moonbeam stuff Shirley added was just silliness. And from that exchange the far left Liberal NY Times paints Kucinich with the nut brush. Why didn't they call Russert a loony for asking such a silly question in a Presidential debate? Why not BawBaw Walter's famous question to Kate Hepburn....if you died and came back as a tree..what kind of tree would you be? puke
One of my least favorite Republican friends mass mailed a cartoon showing Witch Hillary riding a broom over the White House and below it says, NOW THIS IS SCARY! So while some of us may doubt Hillary will win, the wing nuts are already screaming bloody murder. And she does scare them to death. Good!
If we manage to have elections and they are any brand of honest the only direction for us is right straight UP! Whoever becomes the Democratic nominee will be our next President and I'll gladly take any of them, including Mike Gravel. May Allah, God, Buddha and the ghost of the late game show host Bill Cullen watch over us and keep us from Cheney death until the Great Impeachment or January, 2009, whichever comes first!

Charles E. the question came from Russert who claimed Bill Clinton issued the directive that no papers be revealed until 2009. I have no idea what the truth of the matter is. I'm sure if National Archives have control then Hillary would have used that defense to the max. There are likely national security matters involved. So Red, just keep in mind if Hillary's papers are released , THE TERRORiSTS WIN!

"help me out here Vegan...what do you call it for wimmin?"
Hmm, eLwood. I don't know. I yield the floor to the distinguished gentleman from Fort Baptist -- DBI; his vocabulary in this area exceeds mine, but I beg of him not to use the "tit in the wringer" phrase again. That image is too painful to have to read more than once a week.
"she didn't help herself with answers that avoided simple declarations on several issues."
MB, isn't that how we ended up with Bush getting enough votes to be able to steal two elections? He had lots of simple answers, as opposed to Gore or Kerry, who had working brains. And haven't those simple answers worked out well for us? I say we stop requiring simple answers of candidates; but if you simply must have simple answers that don't work this time around, I submit the Huck for your consideration.
I'm avoiding watching any of the debates, but from what I saw on Olberman just now, there was nothing wrong with what she said. I will be happy to have a President who considers all aspects of an issue before taking a stand, and who is willing to change her position if circumstances warrant. That is far preferable to having a petulant spoiled child in office who will not back down no matter how much harm he brings to the country.
This to me was pretty much a non-event. I'm sure she expected, as the front-runner, to be the object of everybody else's affection, so to speak; and the video is funny. I would prefer the other candidates campaign by talking up their own good points rather than attacking her, but nothing seemed so objectionable that it would prevent me from voting for them in the general election if they end up getting the nomination rather than her. The only candidate who improved in my eyes was Joe Biden, because of his comment about Guiliani. If he keeps this up, I may forgive him for Clarence Thomas. Or maybe not; I try to be a good person and not hold grudges, but I never seem to succeed.

Right on the head of the nail, DBI, and the right wingnuts and tar-brush busheviks deserve every last image of the nightmares for payback.
Their despair, fear and abject terror is probably the only bright spot we'll get as the true depths of the Bush administration's incompetence are exposed and the bush-enablers slither back into the shadows as the concealing rocks are turned over.
Just look at today: after 2-1/2 years Karen Hughes resigns and the news summaries lionize her establishment of a bushevik working group of quick response spin doctors in the middle east, too bad it hasn't worked; bush-cheno-mics takes oil to 95 plus on its way to ?; the dollar is sagging to all-time lows; even the wallstreet bonus babies are investing in hard currency (gold $800+ per ounce); the army is admitting that they have barely met recruitment requirements by raiding next years crop and have no hope of meetig this year's goals; the state department's diplomats are on tetherhooks about winning the Iraq assignment lottery and whether to go or resign; and the bush administration decides not to reward the press agent who set up the fake fema press conference with the promotion to press officer for the director of national intelligence; etc. etc. etc.
Go "Iron Petticoat!" scare the vermin!!!

"tit in the wringer" Is that like a mammogram?
The worst performance last night was Brian and Tim of NBC... good gaed they are complete idiots and i wish each and every candidate would have jumped their as* for asking such stupid baited question of no substance..
That said, Watching Obama the last couple of debates has about reached the point of being painful... He is just awful at it...and these are not really debates just really poorly framed Q & A's for the most part with an occasional meek gotcha from Russert.
Hillary won't answer a question in a straightforward manner to save her soul and no one should ever expect her to.. You think she expects us to demand she tell us what she thinks or really plans to do or not! HA! It's fancy footwork to be sure but it should not be a behavior deemed respectable, trustworthy or equated as a strong leader.
Edwards just keeps getting better and better.. His words were powerful, honest, respectful, and reflective of what the people want in these times.. he is listening on his campaign and not just to his consultants.
Kucinich, a man of integrity and straightforward love for our Constitution, Democracy and the American people.. should have looked Tim directly in the eye and said one of two things GFyourself or Tim, have you never looked up at the night sky and seen something out there you couldn't explain? If not, you don't get outside very often do you? BTW, U stands for Unidentified, Tim... whatever you want to imply might make you a freak.. so don't wipe it on my new sports coat.
As for the drivers license ordeal.. my verdict is still out... But there is a nifty little document already in existence called an International drivers license and everyone may obtain one or buy insurance with an Int'l DL. Why not encourage more use of it? After all, in my most humble opinion, not to many uninvited people are going to walk into a government office and willingly provide a home address for ICE if they are at all concerned about being raided, detained, or deported.

Hmmmm, instead of "tit in the wringer" , shall we not create another descriptive phrase for the Dems going down the tubes? Perhaps there would be a better phrase for the gentlemen undergoing a prostate exam?
The animosity among the Dems and Repubs, are leaving this Independent without a candidate.
Not sure who will win the vote of this painted anti-American, illegal despising, resentful of those receiving services who are not citizens, wanting to save SSI payments for those who have paid into the system, believer in the Constitution.

I asked you not to say it, Eureka. Okay, technically I asked DBI not to say it. And a mammogram doesn't hurt, it's just uncomfortable and awkward (if I were really mean, at this point I would say "much like sex with one of the AT good ole boys," but I won't).
You are so right about Kucinich. Tim Russert is an obnoxious ass, and he's not worthy of being in the same room with Kucinich. It's typical of the idiocy of the MSM that they are trying to make Kucinich look like some sort of nut at the same time they are fawning all over Mike Huckabee.
As for Edwards, the more time he spends attacking Hillary rather than touting his own record, the less I like him; but if he is the nominee, I will happily vote for him to get the republicans out of the White House. And again, I did not watch the debate, but from the clips I've seen, Obama just seems to give rather scholarly answers like Gore did; and I'm sure not gonna fault him for that.
But Hillary's still my candidate; and I'm happy things are going so well this election. Last time I started out for Kucinich. Then I found out he voted for impeachment, and that's a deal breaker for me. I switched to Dean; then he got hounded out of the race for saying "yeehaw." I can't remember, but I think there were a couple more who dropped out, then I finally was down to Kerry; but by golly I had sense enough to know he would be a better President than Bush so I voted for him. And I still wonder what exactly is wrong with windsurfing anyway? It looks like fun to me, and it certainly takes more coordination than choking on a pretzel while lying on the couch.
But I digress. Any of the Democratic candidates would make a fine President. Anyone who's even brave enough to run deserves our respect for being willing to take on the job of trying to straighten out the mess Bush will leave.

V4H, I really don't think much of the attacks from candidates on stage were out of line.. They were not personal in any way which voters should not be bothered with.. jmho. Obama stumbles with uncertainty in that kind of forum and seems to have no sense of direction for what he would like to do as president... except in an Why can't we all just get along way. Edwards just came across (to me) as the person on that stage who wanted the job more than any other and everyone knows they have to confront HC as a front runner. Tim and Brian both were simplistic and petulant with their questions and tone... far more personal too.
Even though I wasn't watching things on a daily basis in pre primary '04, I remember catching the clip of the Dean scream on some news show and thinking.. so what. I never really understood why that ended a campaign for anyone.
Interesting point about Kucinich.. would be interesting to hear his take on that vote.. He usually has a pretty good, though sometimes not apparent reason for his positions.. Even if wrong about impeachment of Bill and I agree it sounds wrong to me, imagine a man like him, a true stickler for accountability at the top after Bushco leaves DC.. Wow oh wow... war crimes charges and cleaner elections in the future (among other reforms), a stickler for the constitution and rule of law would be the new black!

Veg....if you got a real fine wringer with lots of fresh rubber on the surfaces, a man could be in as much danger of getting his tit in the wringer as a woman. Sure...like during sex, we'd have to aim better than a woman would...but in the end, isn't aiming what we're all about? I have not been a better husband, but 25 years ago I aimed to be a better husband.
Probably before you were born, America aimed to be a better country than it is today. But little things like Republicans got in the mix and dumbasses, not learning any lessons from Nixon proceeded to vote more of them into office until they grabbed up all the power and started waging war and torturing to distract us from all the loot they're stealing from us. In order to do this they had to secure loyalty oaths from their people and figure out ways to gather up weak Democrats like our own Mark Pryor.
We should have known there was going to be trouble when the Republicans stole God and put an R behind his name. Funny how nearly every day we find out another Family Values, God loving, gay hating, flag waving, Republican has been caught in a hilariously twisted sex scandal. I love you Veg, but I will not dress up like a girl and pay you to have sex with me on an out of town trip. NO.....don't even ask! You go put some clothes on and behave!
With the quality or lack of it from our national news media, no wonder we live in the most information packed era in world history and yet know less and less all the time. If you look at FEMA, the high military command in Iraq and most of the MSN today....it is clear that though their paychecks are giant, no one is demanding competency in the work place any more. Just be loud and pretty and vote Bush and you got a job for life.
Our friend LRMan shows that even though the Civil War has been over for 142 years, racism is alive and flourishing in America. Just imagine what an ugly world we'd live in if there were no minorities to dump on and we had to spend each moment picking on other white people.
They'd be a war on left-handed folks first. Damn! They look funny when they write! And cripples....who the FK needs em? White men would have to ratchet up the stories about larger breast size equaling smaller brain size. Women would have to make sure that everyone on earth knew that only...ONLY penis size matters and advocate for the small willies of the world to be put to sleep. Thank you Allah for giving us minorities to kick around!
So here we are.....hated like never before in our history. Our government torturing and killing and sending us the bill. Election stealing criminals spinning their evil unabated. Our news media corrupt and stupid but loaded with fancy graphics and sound effects. A century filled with amazing advances behind us and us no better off for it. And we pretend we don't know the way out of the woods. Maybe we deserve exactly what we're getting? I'm going to the basement to work the kinks out of a new tit guard I'm working on for Veg. Holler at me if they declare VI Day in Iraq......

Brian almost psd himself getting out of the Mj Decrim. issue, after Dodd said the most intelligent thing I heard all night, and Edwards made the dumbass "sends the wrong message" response... Seems to me that only the "minority" candidates have any actual IDEAS, rather than "more of the same."
Here are some facts:
Myth: Reducing penalties for marijuana offenses sends the wrong message to our children.
Fact: Marijuana prohibition has tempted over 900,000 teens to become sellers of marijuana.1 This has made illegal marijuana more available to the young than beer.2 Marijuana has been used by well over half of the young by the time they reach age 21.3 Regulated trade for marijuana would reduce youth access to this intoxicant, as it does for alcoholic beverages, while increasing tax revenues that can support schools, health care and other programs that benefit youth.

Check out this very well thought out piece on why Democrats should be against Illegal Immigration and what it will mean come general election time;
"Perhaps I am not giving my fellow Americans enough credit, however, it seems to me that the Democratic presidential field last night just committed suicide en masse, with Hillary Clinton the last to swallow the poison by holding out until this afternoon to endorse New York Gov. Eliot Spitzer's proposal to give illegal immigrants some form of driver's licenses. First, let us recall that the reason comprehensive immigration reform failed this past year was not because the president blocked it, but because the people rose up and opposed it. Recall also that Spitzer's initial plan on driver's licenses failed, for similar reasons. John McCain's candidacy crumbled in the face of his support for immigration reform. And a new Democracy Corps study (PDF) finds that the issue of unprotected borders/illegal immigration is the No. 1 issue cited by independents........... If the Democratic field unites around the position of supporting driver's licenses for illegal immigrants, as they now appear, with the notable exception of Sen. Chris Dodd, to have done, they risk being unable to meet the threshold values test of the contemporary electorate."

"which AT good ol boy(s) did you have sex with since you stated as much above?"
eLwood, I must start paying more attention to the wording of my posts. First I start a rumor about Houston Nutt and Britney Spears; now I imply I have had sex with one of the AT good ol boys. I don't know about Houston and Britney in the first one, but I must respectfully deny the latter. I was just speculating, or maybe assuming; and you taught me how true the old adage is about "assume."
Eureka, I agree the attacks were not personal and were to be expected since she is the frontrunner. I just am more impressed with candidates who spend their time saying why I should vote for them rather than attacking one of the others. And I must admit to a double standard on Kucinich and his impeachment vote. I got mad at him, but not at Marcy Kaptur, and am really not sure why.
And gee, Larry, it's election season; we can't have any honesty or common sense creeping in. I think the lower tier candidates are the only ones who dare to speak truth because they have nothing to lose. The media just waits for one of the leading candidates to have a yeehaw moment so they can do the stick the fork in thing and pronounce them done; so everybody tries not to offend anybody or say anything at all controversial. Look at what's happening to Kucinich over the UFO remark.
And DBI, I have a couple of skeins of yarn left over from knitting a sweater, so as a token of my appreciation for the, er, item of clothing you are preparing for me, I will knit you a sock so that you won't be arrested for violating the proposed statute mentioned in the other thread. My "guard" only needs to be an extra-small; but from what you have posted in the past, I'm not sure two skeins of yarn will be enough for your sock. You'll have to let me know the correct size.
And one more thing about Dennis Kucinich: I'm getting sick of all the remarks about his looks. He's cute; and the people saying otherwise are just jealous he has the hot young wife. And a little known fact about the two candidates with hot young wives: Despite the difference in their appearance, Fred Thompson and Dennis Kucinich are exactly the same age -- but Kucinich is a vegan. (I may have made part of that up).
