Perfected: The Ann Coulter Song
on blue name

and with that I'm outa here
a couple of days with computer upgrades and
installing new service.

Two Democrats, Sens. Charles Shumer (NY) and Diane Feinstein (CA), have announced their "support" for Mukasey's AG nomination. Shumer says Mukasey is not his "ideal choice", and Feinstein's reasoning is that at least he "isn't Alberto Gonzales".

Some support.

Anyone hear from our friend Jimmie Higgins lately? I miss our "People's Tribune" friend...

ARK. BLOG: Like Joe Hill, he's alive as you and I.

Can anyone tell me when Gus Blass went out of business?
Was it in 64' or were there still stores with the name after that?
Thanks to you "old timers" who can tell me.....

I saw a Michael Reagan column today.
Here's a direct quote:
"I know you Democrats don't want to do us Republicans any favors, but just this once let us have our way. Give us the opportunity to give the Republican attack machine another shot at Hillary Clinton. Let her coast to victory in the primaries. Then we'll take it from there."
The only thing Michael Reagan has ever done is ride daddy's coattails, so I really don't care what he says, but it's sure good news that he admits that there is a REPUBLICAN ATTACK MACHINE

An environmentalist needs to ask Mayor Stodola about this. What coal fired plant is he referring to? Click on my name to go to the article.

U.S. Mayors Climate Conference: Gore IV
Gore: no more coal plants without sequestration

Mayor Mark Stodola of Little Rock, Ark., asked Gore squarely about coal. He said that his city's electrical rates had been rising, but that a new coal plant opening soon was going to lower the bills.

The Blass and Pfeifer names were dropped in the mid 70's although they were merged in the 60's.

Go to the Butler Center for Arkansas Studies at the Main Library and I think they have all of the old newspaper articles about the consolidation before Dillards bought them.

And the more I think about Stodola's comments, I really want to know how he knows what Entergy's rates are going to be in the future and if we can quote him on the impact. Perhaps he has some kind of deal he should disclose to his citizens.

If he is referring to the proposed SWEPCO plant in Southwest Arkansas, I'm not sure that it will impact Entergy rates. But it is nice to know that the mayor of Little Rock is concerned about power rates in other parts of the state. As I've said before, if he focused half as much of his energy on solving Little Rock's problems as worrying about other people's problems we may actually make some progress.

It almost sounds like the mayor of Little Rock was serving as a lobbyist for the coal industry. Guess he thought residents in Little Rock wouldn't follow the news outside of Arkansas.

So, if the whispers about budget overruns in Little Rock are true, we can count on our mayor to give it at least half of his attention.

You're correct, Any*Mouse. Blass sold out to Dillards in 1964, a couple years after old Mr. Dillard had bought Pfeifer's, another great old department store. The stores then became known as Pfeifer-Blass and eventually the name was changed to Dillard's. Before the purchases, Blass and Pfeifer's, along with Kempner's and M.M.Cohn, made for superb shopping in then bustling downtown Little Rock. At least that's what my 104-year-old, sharp-as-ever Aunt Birdie reports. I still have a spectacular old Tiffany lamp with the original glass shade that my mother bought at Gus Blass Co. in 1929.

Thanks for the info guys.
Needed to date a gown....

I believe, not 100% sure but think that Feinstein's, another Little Rock institution, can claim direct lineage to Pfeifer's.

I have a question. Is it true that Arkansas has open primaries, where if you are registered as an independent you can vote in any primary?

Already this year in Chicago, 54 people under the age of 19 have been killed by gunfire. Last week alone, three children were murdered.

If the answer is yes.. I will drop my registration with the AR Democratic party first thing Monday morning..

I really think our Senator Pryor should be tried along with many others for war crimes and his continued support of people like Mukasey just reinforces my stand on his culpability.

it's another sad day for America.. Chuck and Di Fi are doing Bushies bidding and we can be sure Mark will help all he can... Considering that.. I thought John Dean had an excellent idea of what the Senate should do at the very least..

Letter from John Dean to Josh Marshall at TPM:

A Last Thought Before the Senate Judiciary Committee Confirms Judge Mukasey
By John W. Dean

As the Senate Democrats complete another sad concession to President Bush, and confirms a nominee who refuses to declare "water-boarding" torture, allow me to offer a brief historical reminder: the Senate Judiciary Committee has conspicuously forgotten that there are direct situational and historical parallels with Judge Mukasey's nomination to be Attorney General and that of President Richard Nixon nominating Elliot Richardson to be Attorney General during Watergate.

Nixon's Attorney General had been removed (and was later prosecuted for lying to Congress) - a situation not unlike Alberto Gonzales's leaving the job under such a cloud. Nixon was under deep suspicion of covering up the true facts relating to the bungled break-in at the Democratic National Committee headquarters at the Watergate, not to mention widespread rumors that he had engaged in abuses of power and corrupt campaign practices. Today, Bush is under even deeper suspicion for activities far more serious than anything Nixon engaged in for there is evidence Bush has abused the laws of war, violated treaties, and ordered (or approved) the use of torture and political renditions, which are war crimes.

Since Judge Mukasey's situation is not unlike that facing Elliot Richardson when he was appointed Attorney General during Watergate, why should not the Senate Judiciary Committee similarly make it a quid pro quo for his confirmation that he appoint a special prosecutor to investigate war crimes? Richardson was only confirmed when he agreed to appoint a special prosecutor, which, of course, he did. And when Nixon fired that prosecutor, Archibald Cox, it lead to his impeachment.

Before the Democrats on the Senate Judiciary Committee completely cave-in to Bush, at minimum they should demand that Judge Mukasey appoint a special prosecutor to investigate if war crimes have been committed. If Mukasey refuses he should be rejected. This, indeed, should be a pre-condition to anyone filling the post of Attorney General under Bush.

If the Democrats in the Senate refuse to demand any such requirement, it will be act that should send chills down the spine of every thinking American.

Interesting song (at my name)

It's the Latin mass done by a choir of Congolese children.

I can understand Schumer, he proposed Mukasey in the first place, but Feinstein has the spinelessness of Mark Pryor. She definitely has joined Pryor and Lieberman on my "Quisling" list of Democrat Bush collaborators.

Too bad that unlike Lt. Col, Colby Volkey (http://tinyurl.com/33l383) so many Senior Democrat leaders believe the oath they took ". . . to defend the U.S. Constitution against all enemies foreign and domestic . . ." is as important as soiled tissue paper.

No wonder the Congress polls even lower than Bush. Hopefully, come Tuesday, November 8th 2008 we can return them to private life where their lack of integrity and callow character does not further the damages Bush-Cheney.

It has been illuminating. Who would have thought six years ago, even with the Supremes selection of Bush, that so many senior political leaders, Democrat and Republican, would be in danger of war crimes prosecutions for aiding and abetting Bush-Cheney.

Grrr...nothing like watching yet another Democratic betrayal/rollover to brighten the spirits ha. Given the rhetoric and the fact that it's about TORTURE, I thought the Dems might actually take an ethical stand...and hold it for more than 10 seconds. Well, wrong. Evidently most dems are incapable of taking a stand against monkeyboy and wouldn't know an ethical stand if it bit them on their collective butts. I just wish they wouldn't toy with me by offering up glimses of justice and a two-party system. I was use to them screwing their constituents and our values...and it was cruel of them to make me think they were going to stand up to Bush the Torturer. Bastards.

Thank god a smart Republican didn't steal the presidency...'cause if an idiotic moron like Bush has run this many circles around our 'brilliant' Dems I'd hate to see what a non-monkeyboy would've done.

"It's the Latin mass done by a choir of Congolese children." -- Eureka Springs

That was lovely, Eureka, thanks. I haven't heard it in years, but I had an LP of "Missa Luba" back in the 70's. The portion of the mass on the clip was the Credo (Nicene Creed).

widji - Small world note.. The gentleman who posted that little tidbit used to be a student DJ at KUSF, just a couple of blocks from my house. I listened to him all the time but never met him. Now he is one of my favorite progressive political congressional candidate scouts and I work with him frequently.. I don't know what I would enjoy more, meeting him in person or rummaging through his music collection. *g*

Eureka, by "KUSF" did you mean KUAF in Fayetteville? I was a volunteer DJ there myself during the 80's--pre-NPR. Every Saturday from 9AM to Noon I did classical programming, and after my show I had to start the Metropolitan Opera program feed before leaving--or sometimes stall, if the feed was delayed. My show was on the air when the station switched from 10 Watts to 100 Watts, and it was a thrill to begin getting phonecalls suddenly from Eureka Springs, Berryville, Winslow and Mountainburg.

Er, was your on-air friend's name Mike, perhaps, or maybe Kyle?

I loved KUAF when lived in Fayetteville but KUSF is in San Francisco.. great alternative rock etc. early 80's through mid 90's for me. DJ Howie Klein. I think the closest equivalent in Fayetteville would be kxua student radio (at my name).

I'd put the pre-NPR KUAF into a category with KXUA, then. Very eclectic. I remember Saturday afternoon there was a reggae program, and once I was prevailed upon to substitute for the "wimmin's" programmer--with great trepidation, I might add.

Eureka, you may already know this but by clicking on my name you can listen to KUSF online via Live at 365. Just being helpful....I've never listened to it and I'm afraid the rock they play now will not be soothing to older more delicate ears...ya know.

Boy....KUAF in the 73-76 period was an unformed thing. I remember lots of dead air time and always figured the DJ was out behind the building burning one. I liked it...but it was far from the well-oiled machine it is now.

I feel old every time they say Your NPR station for 21 years.......in the 70s if someone had said NPR to me...I would have thought of the little window on my gear shift lever that said P R N D L......I don't like becoming a dinosaur....and we all know what ultimately happened to them!

Love the Ann Coulter song eLwood,,,,thanx
I've been computerless for a week, too....had mine in the puter hospital getting updated,
cleaned, scrubbed,,,all the mysterious things geeks do to the dang machine,,,,they called
me one day and said I needed more "memory," I said, "Boy, you got that right."
Only set me back $145...I was expecting to have to get a bank loan.
I sure missed all you guys n gals...what did we ever do without this @#$^%$#@ machine???
My son, in Calif. is A ok, house ok, no looters, dodged a bullet this time.

Welcome blog home jazzy. Glad to hear all is well with the family.

dbi - Thanks for the link.. the Alternative stations were always a bit tough for me to listen to for extended periods of time, unless it was a favorite DJ.. I remember when U2 was alternative, to edgy for mainstream..only to be heard on the likes of KUSF or in the dark clubs SOMA or in the Haight etc. many other examples especially the good stuff which we would have never heard anywhere else.

I still have my Free James Brown T-shirt.. I'll bet they were hard to come by in Ft Baptist. *g

Using another's terminal. But the tech-guy must have like me. I finally gave up 98SE for Windows XP.
He bumped my RAM to 1 gig. Entire tab was $50.

It's an old machine but very fast. The fellow who designed it and sold it to me
was a game-computer maker. I often keep some memory-hog programs running when I work and then check in here and another blog thru out the day via Mozilla tabs. Jazzy, if you are not using Firefox-Mozilla browser by all means do the free download. 10x better than Internet Explorer. I've had it for 2 yrs and cannot understand why people would use anything else.
eLwood

My machine is only 3 yrs. old....I have Windows XP......I am mostly self taught and
everything you wrote was like trying to read a letter from my french in-laws.
I have a wonderful friend/guru who has helped me soooo much but she leads such a busy
life I hate to call her too often.
I was happy with the tab,,,,expected $500 !!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!
I appreciate all the help and tips from you guys, I save every one.
