Lawyer indicted

Richard Scruggs, a Mississippi trial lawyer and brother-in-law of Sen. Trent Lott, was indicted yesterday in Mississippi for trying to bribe a judge. Local angle: Scruggs filed class action lawsuits in 2006 against a couple of Arkansas hospitals for charging uninsured patients more than insured patients.

And, yes, as several readers have noted, Scruggs' jet was used to ferry Houston Nutt to his Ole Miss coming out party.

Comments

How could anybody with the smarts of Scruggs be so stupid? I realize Trent Lott has not been accused of any wrongdoing (yet), but given the abrupt announcement about his quitting the Senate, one can only wonder what's next.

It's got to be blatantly 'bad' if ANY relative of Trent Lott is indicted in Mississippi. Durango...I quit wondering a long time ago whether Lott was a sleazy good ole boy who traded the moral/legal obligations of his office in favor of lobby money/political power. And coming from Mississippi, he didn't have to pretend otherwise...much.

According to one of my Mississippi lawyer friends, Scruggs provided the plane that has been carrying Houston Nutt back and forth between Fayetteville and Oxford.

Gee. Does Houston have any experience dealing with illegal or shady booster activity? Might as well get down and dirty from day one. . .

I always thought at the very least folks should have investigated why and how Lott's property was restored so quickly after Katrina..compared to almost everyone around him who are still in shambles. Considering the myriad of scandalous corruption he presided over in the worst congress in history.. There is just no telling how egregious his dark secrets must be.

A good lawyer knows the law. A GREAT lawyer knows the judge. Failing that, a sack of cash might do. Scruggs also helped mastermind the nationwide tobacco settlements.

Pascagoula is a small place. If you've seen the Insider it is depicted well. Dickie's house was right on the beach, I haven't been back since Katrina so I don't know if he rebuilt. Also, despite all of the allegations and negative press Trent Lott is a great guy. When I was growing up in MS he was always very personable. At one time, he was even the most powerful man in the Senate. No wonder his house was rebuilt quickly.

STRANGE BEDFELLOWS ?

Host Indicted, Clinton Fund-Raiser Canceled
Mary Jacoby reports on the presidential race.

A Dec. 15 fund-raising event for Hillary Clinton at the home of prominent Mississippi trial laywer Richard "Dickie" Scruggs is off, now that Scruggs has been indicted for bribery.

Bill Clinton was set to be the star attraction at the event at Scruggs's Oxford, Miss., home. Hillary Clinton wasn't scheduled to attend. It was the first event that Scruggs, who made a fortune suing the tobacco industry in the 1990s, had offered to host for Clinton, a campaign spokesman said. It was canceled on Wednesday, after the Federal Bureau of Investigation raided his home and the federal indictment was announced.

After reading the legal mumbo-jumbo, I am not convinced that the man is guilty of anything. I generally distrust lawyers (except mine, LOL), but I know this: If he is instumental in getting hospitals to charge the same rates for insured and those that are not insured, hurrah for him.
