Not so much freedom of information

The Washington Post fact-checker reviews the issue of fault in the slow trickle of records released from the Clinton archives under FOI requests. Conclusion: there's blame to be placed all around -- on cumbersome Bush rules and slow response by Clinton officials (Bruce Lindsey is reading, page by page, the material being produced before it is passed on to the White House for final review). Given the impediments on release created by Bush rules, it would seem the better course for the Clintons is to speed things on their end to the extent possible. Precious little -- even presuming the material is valuable to political opponents -- is going to reach the public expeditiously under the best of circumstances.

Comments

Hillary should have simply replied that she will encourage Bush-Lite to release all presidential records including his "Hands Off" National Guard records.

Not the pentagon official records but the real records stored in his, forgot to withdraw in time too, daddy's presidential library.

But how much fun was it to watch Hillary! squirm during the debate when asked about these records.

It doesen't mention that Judicial Watch is suing for the release of the records.

The records are important as Investors Business Daily wrote, "The Los Angeles Times reports that calendars, memos and reams of other records from the office of the first lady in the Clinton administration will stay off-limits to public scrutiny until after the 2008 presidential election, according to federal archivists at the Clinton presidential library.
While former President Bill Clinton has authorized lots of the records regarding Hillary's secret health care task force in 1993-94 to be publicly available, more than 1,000 pages have been censored, purportedly because they contain confidential advice protected under the Presidential Records Act.
But that act, amended by President Bush in 2001, makes it clear that the ex-president is the one who makes the call.
"Because the former President independently retains the right to assert constitutionally based privileges," Bush's order states, "the Archivist shall not permit access to the records by a requester unless and until the incumbent President advises the Archivist that the former President and the incumbent President agree to authorize access to the records or until so ordered by a final and nonappealable court order."
We can only imagine some of the comments in those 1,000-plus pages that Bill and Hillary consider to be obstacles to their returning to the White House.
Is there outrage over the Republican efforts to prevent her from stopping people from choosing their own doctor? Is there admiration expressed for the socialized health care systems of other countries? France perhaps? Or even Cuba?
Knowing Hillary's real thinking on health care will be imperative for voters."

Did she Lie????

Is Larry Craig gay? Sunday night, Senator Clinton said that release of White House papers detailing her past record - especially her Cheney-like refusal to allow any public daylight into her healthcare task force - was subject solely to bureaucratic delays. Her former co-president, Bill Clinton, also recently said that he wanted total transparency with respect to these papers. Mike Isikoff finds - surprise! - that these statements are only "true" in the sense that anything the Clintons say is "true." Money quote:

[W]hile publicly saying he wants to ease restrictions on his records, Clinton has given the Archives private instructions to tightly control the disclosure of chunks of his archive. Among the document categories Clinton asked the Archives to "consider for withholding" in a November 2002 letter: "confidential communications" involving foreign-policy issues, "sensitive policy, personal or political" matters and "legal issues and advice" including all matters involving investigations by Congress, the Justice Department and independent counsels (a category that would cover, among other matters, Whitewater, Monica Lewinsky and the pardons of Marc Rich and others). Another restriction: "communications directly between the President and First Lady, and their families, unless routine in nature."

Archives officials say Clinton is within his legal rights. But other Archives records NEWSWEEK reviewed show Clinton's directives, while similar, also go beyond restrictions placed by predecessors Ronald Reagan and George H.W. Bush, neither of whom put any controls over the papers of their wives.
You can download Bill Clinton's letter here http://www.newsweek.com/id/62133. You want to turn the page on Cheney's and Bush's secrecy and unchecked executive power? Don't vote the Clintons back into the White House.

(from Andrew Sullivan)

Uh huh.....more talking points. Maybe this is a good time to remember when Richard Mellon Scaife spent several million back in the 90s to send a batch of snoops to Arkansas to dig up dirt on the Clintons. I knew one of the snoops and he's probably busy raping a 3 year old as I type....disgusting people. And for all his money spent, Scaife didn't find anything to hang the Clintons with. And if you can't dig up dirt on someone in little ole Arkansas with 2 million in 1990 dollars.....they won't find much of interest when all the Clinton papers are released.

Not that either of them are perfect...after all they're politicians and all that that implies. The best snake will still bite ya know. But compared to any member of the Bush administration, Bill looks like Jesus and Hillary...Mother Mary with a sensible hair-do. People who support the most secretive administration in US history can't be throwing rocks at the Clintons.

Bushies hide Bush's records because they'll show George W. Bush is borderline retarded. We've got Chauncey the gardener for a President. Plus I personally think he's as gay as old foot tapper Craig. So rave on CJ and fellow wingnuts......I can't imagine waking up each day knowing you have to defend the likes of Cheney-Bush. It's like being the manager of the Anal Wart Museum.

I suppose this post pretty much trumps the question/statement I posed last night on another thread. I wasn't totally wrong but I also wasn't totally right either. I think BC's comment on transparency pretty well sums up my thoughts on the subject, but it certainly will not stop the wingnuts from trying to make a big deal out of it. Oh well.

Ok and what about Natonal Security issues that are in those papers of Hillary???? That's why the Bush White House wants to review them before they are released to CJ so he can read and read and whip off on the juicy parts. Bush must review them to cover his ass for security failures and possibly the papers may , just may, contain threads, hints that Bush was very forewarned about security threats. Then there's on going intelligence operations that could be compromised not that it makes any difference to
Bush's boss, Darth Cheney. But wait, there's likely classified intelligence stuff in there and if it's leaked and if it falls into the wrong hands THE TERRORISTS WIN! Hey, why not, it worked for 4 years for Monkey Boy.

Hillary is not going to urge Bush to release those records because it's not Bush's doing. That's so much spin. Many of Bush's rules re: records secrecy were overturned recently.

Max is doing a typical job carrying water for Hillary, but the Clinton machine is not going to weasel out of this so easily. So, of course, they've opted for the next best thing: playing the gender card. "Oh, these MEAN men all ganging up on the lone woman on that stage!"

Until the war ends, our children aren't fed Chinese lead and 47 million Americans get basic healthcare, I really don't give a damn about the Clinton or the Bush Sr. presidential archives. NOTHING in those records will give Americans NEW insights about their presidents or Hillary. We know the Clintons and we KNOW the Bush family...and we know what's going on in our country TODAY. Just another example of 'royalty' fiddling while their country burns.

'Madam President' is going to be sooo sweet!

(DBI...I, too, think he's gay as they come--and Rove is flaming!)

we have seen what happens when 50 million is spent when the clintons are investigated. nothing was found. bring them on. do you fools actually think there are bodies in the rose law firm that weren't found before? were there millions hidden in mcdougals safe for hillary that were never found? if there were he would have bailed those banks. how about male hookers snuck into the governors mansion for hillary while bill was having fun? how many nuts are necessary for a conspiracy to be thought fun about the clintons?

My only comment is that those that think that universal health care will stop us from being able to choose our doctors are either misinformed, or idiots that believe everything said to them by the corporations that are making a bundle deny care to so many.

In countries with universal health care, EVERYONE gets to choose their doctor, unlike here where if you are lucky enough to have insurance, you often have to choose from THEIR LIST of approved doctors. If you don't, they WON'T PAY for your care, even if it is an emergency.

Rablib is right; and with our insurance not only do you have to choose from their list if you want to avoid paying most of the charges out of your own pocket, but you still have to jump through several more hoops like getting referrals and approvals and consents and blessings to see anyone other than your primary care physician. The truth is that the first thing insurance companies consider when presented with a claim is "how can we avoid coverage?" The second thing they consider is "how can we hasten the demise of this person so we can make more money?"

I will say, however, that the mere consideration of universal coverage has improved the attitude of our company about paying claims; it's been several months since I've had to do battle with them.

Charles Eddie, click on blue name for a copy of the recent decision re the Executive Order signed by Dubya shortly after taking office in order to block the release of papers from Reagan and Bush I's time in office, but which they are now trying to use against the Clintons even though the stuff from Reagan and Bush I's terms still has not been released. If you wade through all the procedural stuff, you will be rewarded by a good exposition of the history of this thing. To sum up, though, BWC nailed it.

Whew, V4H that document is tough to wade thru when you are not an attorney......LOL, but it pretty well backs up what I said originally. Both BC and HC have asked the Archives to speed up the process but the process for releases is way to cumbersome to be tweaked in the least way. That also shoots the hell out of Severus's post as well.

Thanks
