Nutt: Stick a fork in him

He's done. Houston Nutt won't return in 2008 as the Razorback football coach, Channel 40/29 is reporting. I think they're right.

(And, read on. I can envision a scenario in which he doesn't complete 2007.)

However, the university has issued this statement through Tysen Kendig, associate vice chancellor for university relations:

"It seems some media outlets chose to falsely legitimize baseless rumors with unknown details from unnamed sources without first seeking the benefit of fact from the university.

"The fact is, there has been no determination regarding the status of Houston Nutt, nor would there be until the normal review process for coaches takes place after the season. The chancellor affirmed this very clearly, on the record, some 24 hours earlier, and nothing has changed in regard to the coach's status of the Razorback football team since that time. Reports to the contrary are misleading and irresponsible."

Nothing happened publicly at the UA Board of Trustees meeting Friday either. But there was an executive session attended by Chancellor John White. The chances are good that football was discussed, but trustees declined to answer questions afterward.

I'll remind you, though, what a source of mine told me early in the year, shortly before the Frank Broyles retirement story broke, "By the end of 2007, neither Broyles nor Nutt nor Stan Heath will be working at the University of Arkansas." At least not in the positions they then held. Broyles, as you know, will continue as a UA goodwill ambassador after his retirement Dec. 31.

Whatever the specifics, it's clearly time for a locker room "Win one for the Nutter" speech. Or two of them. One for Miss. State and one for LSU.

UPDATE: Interesting quote from J. Frank on Channel 4:

 "People don't care to see you play, they come to see you win. And if you don't win you're in trouble," explains Frank Broyles about the challenge any head coach faces.

When asked if Nutt's job is on the line this was Broyles' response, " It wouldn't be if I'm the athletic director. If he wanted to leave I'd say that's fine with the negativity, I don't know, I don't know."

That sounds a lot like a non-confirmation confirmation, particularly when you read Jim Harris' report on speculation that Nutt has job offers dangling.

Indeed, I suspect the early stage of the replacement search is underway. And, while we don't know the specifics of Houston Nutt's departure, I'm thinking that it might be sooner rather than later if the Hogs lose to Mississippi State tomorrow. But, no, Frank Broyles wouldn't step in to coach the final game against LSU, as one blog wag suggested (even if the Nutt offense is reminsicent of the Broyles era.)

Why, you ask, would the UA oust Nutt after a loss? To jumpstart the replacement process and get an edge on other schools also searching.

Some say if Nutt hadn't run off an all-American quarterback or otherwise had a ready qb -- and if he could have kept his cell phone in his pants -- it might not have come to this.

PS: Yes, football was discussed during the board's executive session.

And Brummett reviews the UA's (mis)handling of the Mustain e-mail affair.

And Harry King runs the numbers on the cost of sending Houston Nutt away.

Comments

Well finally, the terrorists lost the battle!

I think when you can't pull together a good enough team for a Heisman candidate to shine, then yes, you need to go.

This season has been a shame for the most part. It can only go up from here.

state is going to win tomorrow.

p.s. you all need to get a life.

"state is going to win tomorrow.

p.s. you all need to get a life."

Why even comment on this thread then?

Just feeling mean?

I hope the report is true.

'nuff said.

"Why even comment on this thread then?"

Because I believe I possess the moral obligation to tell you that. It's fact, hell, it's even science. Truth be known, most of you on here are devoid of any social interaction skills that would otherwise lead to one-night stands, meaningful relationships, inconsequential relationships, or whatever floats your boat.

But devoid of all of this social happiness, this blog fills the vacuum in your soul. You feel big on here. No one knows you're balding, have bad breath, packing on a few extra pounds or just generally look like a massive recessive gene.

So, yes, I am being mean, but again it is because I can be. I know it is beyond your control to get a life. But hell, it's a lot of fun for me to poke fun at you.

Carry on.

Ah, Maxwell Smart, me thought you died recently but you've proven that myth wrong! As for people that blog here and leave their comments for reading and casual speculation, what harm is it? As for you assuming that those who leave comments are "devoid of all of this social happiness" and " devoid of any social interaction skills that would otherwise lead to one-night stands, meaningful relationships, inconsequential relationships, or whatever floats your boat." well that's just plain stupid and ignorant on your part. Look at you, you yourself feeding fuel for the fire...

Getting back to Nutt...Boyles leaving only left the door open for us all to finally stand up and say that Nutt has to go.
And he does...

Go mean again Maxwell Smart and I'll come thru this blog and rap on your keyboard...

Congrats BIGFAN -- You are like my Republican friend down the hall with whom I may disagree, but who I know wants nothing but the best for our country. I can't say I'm happy, but I know you want nothing but the best for the Hogs. (Dang, I hope they cancel the airplane banner for Saturday. Kinda pointless now and bound to be a downer for the players and staff.)

Max, I hope the UA powers don't think they are going to get any edges on other schools by starting their search early. See, e.g., Stan Heath -- axed March 25, the week before final 4 -- that did a lot of good.

Top notch coaches probably will wait to see if Dorrell survives at UCLA, if Leach is bored at Texas Tech, if Petrino wants to come back to college coaching at LSU, if Miles goes to Michigan, and ? goes to Nebraska.

The situation is ripe for the UA to get "Gillispied" once again. Maybe "Tubervilled". Some might consider that poetic justice.

Better to take plenty of time. Seems to me that in selling school football programs it's a buyer's market right now.

No. I am not Teresa Ann Prewett.

Oh, and how come Red Sox fans are deemed to have a life even though they are rabid supporters of their team but Hog fans aren't? Maybe per capita income or average level of education is supposed to the the indicator. Oh well, Go Blue! Go Torre! Go Dodgers!

63-51 with under two minutes left.

Somebody post something when the first Firejohnpelphrey site goes up.

Later today?

Or is it already up?

Maxwell Smart, if the rest of us are only here because our lives are totally devoid of meaningful human contact and it is "beyond your control to get a life," what in the world are YOU doing here?

If you're so much smarter and more sought-after than the rest of us, why are you wasting your valuable time being mean to people on a blog "just because you can"? shouldnt you be out putting the finishing touches to the cure for cancer you just discovered or something?

we are here because we want to be here and we like each other. I'm working tonight as usual, and this is my break time. I don't give a rat's patootie what you think of me or the blog, but I don't like for you to be mean to my friends here. If you're too good for us, we can certainly try to carry on without you.

Now back to the topic at hand - I bet it's Mike Leach. Of course, the new Hogs coach could also be me, which is one reason why Im working and staying close to the phone tonight. ;)

Does anyone know if a 2 yr old needs a ticket to attend a game?

TAP....

I am sorry you are saddened by the turn of events. Did you see the KATV newscast?

Nutt and Reed basically denied the reports...while mouthpiece Odus Kirk reports it as true.

I do hope that this helps OUR Hogs.

And I am sure Nutt will find another cashcow.

Now for that other matter....

~~~~~~~~~~~
Yo Maxwell!
You said....to my question as to why post on this thread...to just be mean?
" yes, I am being mean, but again it is because I can be."
Actually Maxwell....the real reason is in this line:
"You feel big on here."
Yes...you must.
Well. I am BIG off here.
And you are dumb and mean...but not so dumb as to realize that me being BIG off here is no real threat to you on here.
"But hell, it's a lot of fun for me to poke fun at you."
Maxwell
Ah yes....I guess it must be fun for you....
Ya know why I say that?
"Because I believe I possess the moral obligation to tell you that. It's fact, hell, it's even science. Truth be known, most of you on here are devoid of any social interaction skills that would otherwise lead to one-night stands, meaningful relationships, inconsequential relationships, or whatever floats your boat.
But devoid of all of this social happiness, this blog fills the vacuum in your soul. You feel big on here. No one knows you're balding, have bad breath, packing on a few extra pounds or just generally look like a massive recessive gene. "
Oh....did I say that?
Hey Maxwell.....
"Carry on."
'nuff said.
..and while Fayetteville will be going down to yet another embarrassing defeat, UCA will play McNeese State tomorrow for the Southland Conference championship.
Who needs the Razorbacks anyway?
ARK. BLOG: Cowboys will win.
All for the best, I guess, BIGFAN... No, I didn't see the TV news.
What do you think of tina's Mike Leach theory? Never a dull moment.
Tuberville wins, but I always thought Nutt beat him a couple of times with less overall talent.
Coaching the Falcons can't be any fun, but it pays well.
Who is the *next* Urban Myer anyway?
Go Hogs.
Stogster - Everyone needs a ticket, regardless of age.
"Because I believe I possess the moral obligation to tell you that. It's fact, hell, it's even science. Truth be known, most of you on here are devoid of any social interaction skills that would otherwise lead to one-night stands, meaningful relationships, inconsequential relationships, or whatever floats your boat."
And here we have an example of douche bag pretending to be a clever asshole. "Because I believe I possess the moral obligation to tell you that." MaxwellSmart, you're really only allowed to use this line when explaining to someone the importance of practicing safe sex when they know they have an STD or an equivalent situation.
Now that Maxwell has thoroughly described his pathetic self maybe he will change his two week old underwear, see if his 11 year old car will start and make it to Taco Bell drivethru.
I heard Nutt is headed for Baylor.
Go to coacheshotseat.com and you will see that Houston is at the top of the list. He even beats out Charlie Weiss of Notre Dame.
Don't fret about Maxwell, he'll be gone soon......he is close to signing a contract with Fox News. No face time for him, tho.......his job is to prep the on-air talent by yelling idiotic things at them just before they are turned loose in front of the cameras.
Sanford...ya owe me a keyboard....mine now has Diet Mt Dew all over it and my monitor.
I have found the monitor is easier to clean up.....
Baylor.....?
I heard the same thing.
TAP....don't know much about Leach....let's hope I ain't on here in few years typing in Caps about him.
GO HOGS!
TAP.....I found this posted by the main guy who was responsible for the banners, his board name is "Reaganite":
Quote on the Razorbacktalk site:
"'m going to stop short of saying Mission Accomplished, but it looks like Nutt's time at Arkansas is about done.
I stated earlier in the season that if an announcement came forth that Nutt would not be back in '08 the banners would stop. The announcement hasn't come from one place today, it's come from several.
SO:
Banner operations are now over. No more banners.
If you contributed to the banner that was to fly tomorrow in the last week, you'll receive a refund [less the paypal fees charged to me] sometime this weekend (I have to do them individually on paypal).
Thanks to the many that helped fund them and to those that gave the operations their moral support.
We called those banners, brotha!"
~~~~~~~~~~~~~~

I too am glad that part of this is over.

Can Coach Spurrier call the Hogs?

Bye Bye Houston.

Thanks BIGFAN. Best regards.

I don't follow the blogs and sources like some, but isn't Spurrier to Arkansas kind of like Self to Arkansas? Floyd to Arkansas? Calipari to Arkansas? Pitino to Arkansas?

Why? Why in the world? Spurrier's got the Carolinas and Georgia to recruit from, and Florida has more talent than its 3.5 big time programs can use.

(I e-mailed a very famous sports columnists in the middle of the Heath/Altman thing. He told me that Arkansas was renowned for its arrogance, got played by Gillispie when all the college basketball world knew what was happening, and had fans who didn't realize the job wasn't half what the people inside the state thought it was.)

But who knows? That was basketball . . . Maybe it'll be Spurrier.

GO HOGS!!

TAP...we gotz to dream.

And if we are going to dream....DREAM BIG!

I hope the Hogs kick some a$$ this last two games!

Go D-Mac!

Go Hogs!

A Two year old wont have to have a ticket for the big game.
However, it will have to produce a drivers licence, as proof of age.
Preferably it should be a New York Licence.

I guess loving the Helmet and preaching out loud about "2012" was a part of the show.

blue link....end of video....interesting

I've never been in on the Great Debate of 2006-07, but I have to say that when I first saw a headline saying Coach Nutt was leaving voluntarily, I felt a great sense of relief. I think it's just time to move on.

Move on to where, though? Who might the next coach be?

ISTM there are some promising prospects at Mizzou and Kansas whom one would not expect to be too proud to take the Arkansas job. I have a hard time imagining Spurrier in Fayetteville. Of the former Florida coaches, Zook seems more likely (and a better fit). And even he is extremely unlikely, I think.

What about Gus Malzahn? . . . chuckle

"No, I didn't see the TV news."

TAP, I saw it and will fill you in, in spite of the fact that you probably don't want to know. Those idiots spent about ten minutes of the time that should have been devoted to real news discussing instead a rumor that Nutt will be leaving. Then they talked to other people about the rumor, stressing all the while that it was just a rumor, and then talked amongst themselves some more about it. I know this is an important story, but could they not confine it to the sports segment until they have some real facts to report? They saved about fifteen seconds to report the apparently, to them, less important story that another Arkansas soldier had been killed.

Thank you Vegan. How sadly, and foolishly, have I lost perspective.

I suspect that coaches enjoying historic success, with more to come, at Kansas and Missouri in -- arguably -- the best conference in the country (3 BCS possibilities for two slots) would consider moving over to Arkansas as quite a step down.

As in the case with Self, Calipari, etc....the question in my mind is "Why would he?"

On the other hand, maybe Lou Saban would be interested tonight. If he'd take a million dollar cut and we raise the severance tax, we could probably pull it off.

On top of that, the pilot who has been busy flying banners at Razorback games lately can probably pick up some good work in Tuscaloosa.

IMO, the only person who should be fired is Wally Hall for continuing to fan the flames of "emailgate", "textgate", etc.--not Houston Nutt.

Besides, the rumors misconstrue Chancellor White's policy: The AD won't even start the review process till the season's over. If the stories about the BOT are true, all they're doing is asking White to keep them updated on his discussions with the AD; it's White who will make the final decision, not the BOT or the AD.

That's how it was with Stan Heath; so it will be with Nutt. Besides, IF he leaves, it will NOT be because of anything related to "the divas of Springdale" (Mustain & his mom, Malzahn, etc.--I'm glad they're gone).

Does anyone have ticket or revenue numbers for the football program this year? That's why Heath was fired; it those numbers are down, that will tell you if Nutt's job is on the line or not. There may be a new AD, but Frank Broyles (who just said he wouldn't fire Nutt if it were his decision) is still close by and White still makes the final decision; the process won't be any different this time.

BTW, I just read the BOT article; it confirms everything I said. This ain't the '60's, when the BOT supposedly gave Broyles a "lifetime" contract; the UA system today is too big for the BOT to make every big decision in Fayetteville, even the football coach. As both I and the article said, though Long, Broyles, and perhaps even some BOT members will have input, it's White's decision--and it won't come till after the season is over, including any bowl game (even if it's the Weedeat---uh, PetroSun Independence Bowl).

About that picture...

Someone must have asked him to do his best Ted Baxter impression.

So much talent gone to waste due to the inability of the coaches. Isn't it possible that this is the reason the fans are calling for Houston etal to go somewhere else?

Ah, yes, Curious, but not all agree that talent has been wasted by coaching. Your experience, study and analysis of the game may yield a different impression than mine: to wit -- I look at Nutt's supposedly one-dimensional offense and the fits it gave Florida last year versus the Gators' man-handling of the Heisman winner Troy Smith and Ohio State and I think "Hmmm...Nutt didn't beat Florida, but he did a pretty good job against the best team in the nation."

I make a similar analysis of UA's performance against an LSU defene that smacked around Notre Dame and its talented offense.

You and others look at the same evidence and make a completely contrary assessment. Who am I to say mine is right and yours is wrong? I don't say that.

Some look at the disappointing season and say it's another sign of Nutt's inabiltiy; others say all the high hopes rested, in part, on the availability of Marcus Monk to (1) finish drives in the red zone and (2) make folk pay once in a while for crowding the line. Some do not believe inept coaching played as big a role as injury.

Some look at Mustain (who is, I think, a future Tom Brady) and his performance last year and say "8-0 or not, for the love of Earl Morall, that interception at SC was gosh-awful and if we don't get him out of the game then and there we lose." others say "Nutt must hate him so he pulled him.."

Some say the incredible deftness and timing Mustain showed on the scoring pass against Alabama is matched only by the scary inaccuracy of a scoring pass against Auburn that was so poor that the d-back fell down while Monk made a fabulous adjustment.

So you see, Curious, is not that my analysis is correct and yours is wrong. Mine may be completely off the wall -- proof conclusiive of my lack of football acumen and unsuitability for the high calling of message board expert commentator --- I only mean to say that you are working from a premise with which a great many do not concur.

make that "For the love of Earl Morrall. .. . ."

"How sadly, and foolishly, have I lost perspective."

TAP, I hope you didn't think I was directing any criticism toward you -- it was strictly confined to the media. They seem to fixate on one story per day, to the exclusion of all else; and it's especially annoying when what they're just getting all giddy about is just another rumor in a long line of rumors.

". . . the Gators' man-handling of the Heisman winner Troy Smith and Ohio State . . . "

Well now you're just being mean.
