Nutt news -- UPDATE

Slogging through my e-mail, and still not to the bottom, I was interrupted by a phone call from Jim Harris, High Priest of Hogdom, who mentions a 6:30 p.m. news conference today on the "future of Arkansas football" involving coach Houston Nutt, outgoing athletic director Frank Broyles and Chancellor John White.

At first blush, I tended to agree with Jim's initial post. Sounded like the haters needed to get ready for some hugging. Would you have a big presser to announce a departure?

But ..... what do I know?

ESPN continues to report that he won't be coming back and will get $3.5 million in traveling money.

The Morning News is saying Nutt is fully roasted as Arkansas coach. A one-sentence statement that he won't return.

Jim now adds that his sources, too, say it's Nutt's farewell announcement and that he'll have a new job lined up shortly.

My sources last week insisted two weeks ago that Nutt was through, regardless of the outcome of the final two regular-season games. They've been reliable in the past. But I believed as many did that the LSU game could have changed the equation.

I'm also hearing that Nutt won't be on the sidelines for whatever bowl game taps the Hogs. One of his assistants would handle the chore -- guess Reggie Herring.

Here's a tip, too, for deciding whether this die was cast weeks ago: Check how many of Nutt's assistants turn up with jobs in the next few days and weeks.

Finally, if you want to look for a key factor in bringing this issue to a head -- in addition to the obvious fracture in the fan base -- take a look back at e-mails sent by the head coach's wife.

the news all over the web is that Nutt has been bought out.

check the link....there are others on Hogville.net

We'll have to wait to see.....Yo Mark Lericos! You called that play brotha!

One more time.....blue name.

ESPN "sources" agree with BIGFAN1. Click on blue name.

Regardless of the outcome, I say fire Wally Hall.

On a whim I looked to see if the www.firewallyhall.com is active and, well see for yourself.

I will now go and quietly think about how much good could have been done around this state with $3.5 million.

go hogs.

Damn....and I had my money on Nutt leaving after the Bowl game. This is why I don't gamble.

AMAZING!

The games being played on the hill.

Lericos reported last week about Nutt's leaving. Nutt tries to put Lericos in a bad light at the post game presser.....then today....the KHBS website has had to change it's story THREE times in the last hour!

It went from "Nutt gone!" ...to "Nutt wants to Stay"....to "Nutt Resigns".

Tell me he wasn't being fed crap to make them look bad....

It's almost over....

"He who laughs last....laughs loudest." right Mark?

Rivals.com is saying HDN is taking his buyout and heading to Georgia Tech, where he'll replace Chan Gailey, who was let go after seven straight WINIING seasons - but an 0-6 record against archrival Georgia, and only ONE appearance in the ACC title game, which they lost.

Well I'll swan, between the nutt and the huck, I've had enuf entertainment to keep me cogitating for a spell. Someone hurry up and get on to the speculatin 'bout who's gonna take over.

Poor Houston. If the GT rumor is true, it will likely be more of the same for him. Decent seasons smashed by Nutt haters foaming at the mouth, damaging recruiting abilities and team confidence. Sounds like GT already has Hog-style fans in place and waiting for his arrival. Do you think they'll let him play a game before they start making t-shirts and flying banners, or do you think that'll start at the press conference announcing his new job?

GT wants Nutt, who has never beaten UGA?
Okay,

If they have read the stuff online about Nutt's cronies....expect a new website hawking Fire Nutt t-shirts before he gets off of the plane.

He's got enough money now he for sure won't care.....

To me....the Broyles/White presser sitting with Nutt is not gonna make things easier for Long.

But then I am probably wrong....agin.

georgia tech is a step down in money and confrence. it is a much better school academically but for football it is a little below. the end of the year check would be a lot less. you would not be on tv as much and because of academic requirements recruting would be harder.

I just want a promise from the Nutt haters: Give the new coach at least 2 years. In the meantime, stfu and keep your opinions to yourself. Nutt was far from perfect, but those people went too far, too often. I haven't missed a Razorback game since I was knee high, but I boycotted the last fourth of the season (minus The Boot...can't miss that...ever) because I was so sick and tired of hearing their crap. Perhaps it's personal for me...they stopped being content bashing Nutt, and they started going after the Springdale kids...one of which is my stepbrother. Perhaps they forgot: these kids are teenagers. They don't know how to play your stupid games, and they never wanted to. They just wanted to play their game...football. For a team they grew up loving. And you left them all with a bad taste in their mouth. Get a grip, Nutt haters. Get a grip.

For everyone, from Wally hall to the other Houston Nutt haters, answer me this: Who are we going to get? For all of you with "sources" about Butch Davis, he just signed a two years extension. He's out. And do you really think Jimmy Johnson is coming? C'mon-cushy gig on Fox, no pressure to recruit or win. Please. So C'mon those that wanted Nutt gone, who is going to lead the Hogs to the National title? And rest assured, you can countthose Warren kids out as Hogs. The last time we ran off a decent coach in Ken Hatfield, the program suffered for 8 years until Nutt arrived. Get ready for another dreary 8 years. And the BBall program can't bail us out like it did when Nolan was here. I hope everyone is happy. Houston my man, I wish you luck in whereever you go. You are class act with passion and love for the Hogs.

devilsadvocate

Ya confused me....maybe it is because I never thought of the Springdale kids as a part of the problem.

The treatment they received that was bad seems to have come from those who thought Nutt orchestrated the signing of their head coach in order to secure as many of them as he could. Seems now that Nutt was forced by a meddling AD to accept that deal. That is why he never gave them a real chance.....see the emails and realhogblog for details.

Most 'haters' now see the kids as the ones who got the real shaft....along with those fans who saw Nutt as a hindrance to a consistently great team.

The division caused by the AD & head coach trying to fool people into believing that DMac & remaining company didn't need a consistent passing game to achieve the goal of a big time winning season cost us all.

Imagine the Malzahn offensive scheme ( see Tulsa's #1 ranking in Total Offense this season) along with a" properly schooled" and appreciated passing QB (see Mitch Mustain next season at USC) with DMac, Jones, Hillis and Monk linemates on the field against any SEC team.....

We missed out thanks to all of the drama.

Bring tha wood....?...bat or 2 x 4?

And why does the U of A need to pay a guy to leave?

He has a job lined up.

Smells like there is more dirt deeper on the hill than we yet know....

Good Ol Boys usually win silence when they want it....using other folks money to do so.

class act.....

gee.....

Big Fan,

Mustain won't see the field. USC is in a different class and Mustain is good, but not good enough to start at USC. Mark my words. He and Williams should have followed Gus to Tulsa. I'm glad Gus is doing well and we probably could have used a bit of his game planning against Bama and Auburn.

Again, who is going to lead us to the Promise Land that everyone thinks we ought to be at?

Gee whiz, CBM, how can you describe Houston Nutt as a 'class act' with his most recent past out there for all to see: (outright lies to fans and Malzahn about 'changing' his offensive policy, contemptible emails received and sent from his personal computer [attributed to his wife], personal contact with another female that only an idiot would not think unseemly).

As to Hatfield's being 'run off', just who in the hell do you think did that--the fans? No, it was King Frank who is on the wrong side in this instance, too.

I just have to have some confidence that Mr. Long will be able to find an able coach who won't lie when the subject is serious.

All I know is, Houston has sent more players to the NFL than any other coach we've had, recruited a Heisman tropy candidate and raised our expectations. Remember, before Nut came, we couldn't be SMU. Now we are beating LSU. Two years from now, remember this day when we are in our second losing season and losing recruits and no one is in the stands on campus.

I'm sorry that he is leaving. I do think it will hurt the program for the foreseeable future.

I do hope all of you haters will give us all some peach and just shut the fuck up now, because most of us are sick of listening to you.

I meant "peace."

CBM

Ya seem to be a reasonable feller or gal.....Nutt didn't recruit Dmac......

The helmet did.

Tradition did.

A state that used to be singlemindedly Hog crazy did.

Nutt and Broyles together have created this mess.....and yeah....Dianna and Teresa Prewett along with the rest of us internet fools contributed mightily.

I too hope Long can do a better job....my only worry is that he was signed by the same bunch that allowed this fiasco to end up this way.....

by the way.....Nutt is being made out to be a martyr on ESPN....the spin.....he is leaving for the good of the fan base.

You can vote to help him sell the idea....go to ESPN.com and help the rich boy out.

Ha! He loves the helmet so much he has negotiated himself a pot full of money to do the "right thing for the program he loves".

class act....

Hey Pippy....you are about as classy as your fearless leader.

When I type something here....you can't HEAR it. So just don't read it.

And I love the Hogs...so after 6:30 pm I won't qualify as a Hater no more.

Go Hogs!

It ain't just Nutt that's the problem - I have been a Hog Fan all my life but something is wrong with a program that can only brag about a championship that last happened in 1964 - THATS 43 YEARS AGO, YOU DUMMIES !!! There are only a handful of students at the U of A that were born when the hogs won their last championship. I'm tired of mediocrity. Yeah, but you say, "there have been consistent winning seasons and bowl games which equals MONEY! Hey, I understand money but what the fans would like to have at least every decade or so is a championship caliber team. When Arkansas was in the SW Conf Texas was always the spoiler but now we do a pretty good job of spoiling it for ourselves. Win the ones we shouldn't and lose the ones we shouldn't. I'm frustated, can you tell. But, I still say "Go-Hogs-Go".

BigFan, I don't believe that you love the hogs nearly as much as you love being self-righteous. I've got a feeling you always find something to complain about. Whether reading or hearing the complaints of you and your ilk, its become very tiresome. So, I'm just asking that you give it a rest after 6:30 today. Okay?

"There ought to be a law against that." I often rally against that thought because we have too many laws now, so many they can't be enforced.
However:

" ESPN continues to report that he won't be coming back and will get $3.5 million in traveling money."

There ought to be a law against that profane buyout in an impoverished state where some roads are about the same as 200 years ago, where teachers are at the bottom of the ladder in pay, and the fuball coach is paid 5x as much as the governor. Since it's entertainment and not education why not allow the state to run gambling and lottery operations for entertainment? If they want to pass the lottery bill simple state that 50% of the proceeds can be used to pay winning Razorback coaches a hefty bonus.

Yep, the world in coming to an end with the departure of HDN from Hog football, just as it did when I was a kid and Bowden Wyatt left for Tennessee driving that new Caddy the appreciative Hog fans bought him.

Man......I just imagine that you yourself find plenty of stupid inane stuff to bitch about.

You just told me and my ilk to STFU simply because you are tired of hearing us. Then ya come back and try to insult me.

And I am supposed to be self-righteous?

If ya come down off of that high horse and look around a minute you might realize this is an internet Blog's response area.....

We have a right to speak-up on threads posted on this blog....if we didn't offer our views...then it could get awfully one-sided.

So I guess I will await your next little rant....or insult....

BTW.....choose...which did ya love or support more?

Did ya love Nutt?

Or the Hogs?

If your answer is "the Hogs".....let's see who ya cheer for when and if he gets signed on as Head Coach at Ole Miss as is rumored.....?

Correct me if I am wrong: Since 1869, yes folks thats the middle of the 19th century, Arkansas has won only 1 national championship in football - that being in 1964. Pitiful - Pitiful. King Bee knew how to rake in the money and build the facilities but he never learned how to win championships. Will that ever change? What needs to be done to make the change? It seems to be a state of mind at the U of A that a winning (bowl eligible) season is satisfactory, and if it gets lucky, say every 150 years or so and wins a championship - then that's just gravy. GO HOGS GO!!

I don't have a problem with Houston Nutt's salary and buy-out. He was worth it.

But the salary for the next coach should be cut dramatically. There is no reason to spend much money on coaches when so many of our disloyal "fans" are trying to undermine the team.

Many of the Nutt-haters wanted Arkansas to lose the LSU game. Treasonous bastards.

Nutt and his family can move forward and continue living their lives. What is the big deal? Not being in Arkansas is not going to create any major trauma in his life, he is still young enough to pursue other options; and it is not like the man is financially destitute--he can provide for his family. I wish him well in all subsequent endeavors.

As said by Gene Wojciechowski in his ESPN column...

"There are other overrated coaching jobs, beginning with UCLA (everything done on the relative cheap), Arkansas (limited in-state recruiting base, psycho fan expectations), Michigan State (program sounds good on paper, until you realize Michigan and Ohio State are in your conference)."

At this point, I think he's absolutely correct. It's sad.

It's OFFiCIAL, Houston is gone (resigns), just as Max has been saying.

.

John White should follow the fine example of Frank Broyles and Houston Nutt.

During the live announcement one thing stood out to me: Chancellor White is definitely in charge. Seems a long standing pissing contest between White and Broyles has ended.
.

Now that we have Nutt out of the way, Fire Cheney!!! or just scare him real good, his ticker is on the blitz again.

Houston, you fixed the problem. Good night and good luck, and remember to look out for those internets, wherever you may go!

Let me preface this by saying that I have cursed Houston Nutt with the best of them but......

Do you know why Arkansas has been on tv so much in the last 10 years? Drama. Drama sells. Whoever gets Houston Nutt will get on TV because the games will be close in the 4th quarter. I don't know if our NW Arkie brethren know this but tv equals $$$. Today is a sad day in Razorback History. I'll take a 8-4 season with a 50 to 48 victory over the number one team in the nation the day after Thanksgiving (on CBS) over a team that beats opponents mercilessly week to week. Who wants to see their team win 50 to nothing every week? CBS sure the hell don't! That's like going to see zz top every night for a week!

We've sold out our homeboy for the CORPORATE MODEL. That really sucks. Hopefully we will be smart enough to take Houston back after we try to crawl back to an 8-4 record in the next 10 years.

We've sold out our homeboy for the CORPORATE MODEL.<<

Just what has our "homeboy" via Frank of the Ozarks approach produced in the past 17 years?

The UA should be run by it's chancellor and trustees, just like other mainstay universities across the nation.

As with almost all sports stories Arkansas-related, we'll get the most insightful analysis from out-of-state writers. Ivan Maisel checks in quickly on espn.com. Here's a tidbit I as a lifelong Hog fan agree with, and then a link to the article:

"The Springdale faction waged a war of attrition against Nutt and they won. But what they won wasn't a war, only a battle. They don't win unless the guy who replaces him comes in and wins. Texas A&M forced out R.C. Slocum in 2002 and found out that just because you get a new coach doesn't mean you get a winning one."

http://sports.espn.go.com/ncf/columns/story?columnist=maisel_ivan&id=3128982

I vote that we go back to the contract MANY years ago and allow a local station to hold the air contract and get rid of Jefferson Pilot. Seems to me that the statewide fanbase began to seriously decline after two events:
Loss of consistent availability for the fans
Moving all but one GOOD game to Fayetteville

Hmmmm (pointer finger laid aside the mouth), wonder who is TRULY responsible for the split in the fans?

"Texas A&M forced out R.C. Slocum in 2002 and found out that just because you get a new coach doesn't mean you get a winning one."

Yep, and when Danny Ford was forced out in 1997 it was found out just because you get a new coach doesn't mean you get a winning one.

"Many of the Nutt-haters wanted Arkansas to lose the LSU game. Treasonous bastards.'-- Arkansas Blogger.

Sorry, Blog, but methinks you are confusing loyalty to a program as being synonymous with loyalty to a coach. Big difference. The same line would follow that loyalty to country is synonymous with loyalty to government.

just a hunch. espn says UA offered houston an extension and a raise; he said no, thanks. he is rumored to already have a job lined up a long way from fayetteville, arkansas. methinks mrs houston said, you are going elsewhere, and we are disposing of your text messager in the trash compactor.

gjd
Only if she had to give up email............

Bring on JIMMY JOHNSON - 3 year contract - pay him a wad from that Hog slush fund - and, turn him loose to do it his way with only one caveat --- to not get us in trouble with the NCAA police (it would be okay to walk really close to the line but just don't cross it). The fans would love him, the players would love him and I believe he would produce but if not then he's outta here after 3 years. GO HOGS GO!!!!
