Republican repartee UPDATE IV
GOP Chair Dennis "What we need is another 9/11" Milligan seeks an apology from Sen. Denny Altes of Fort Smith (pictured) for stupid remarks.
Fort Smith-Fayetteville station KHBS / KHOG-TV reported Wednesday evening that Altes sent an e-mail calling for illegal aliens to be sent back and stating that “we are being out populated by the blacks also.” Dennis Milligan, the state party chairman, said in a written response that illegal immigration should be discussed “in a respectable manner, without pitting neighbor against neighbor or using fear as a divisive tool.
... [quoting the Altes e-mail] “ We are where we were with the black folks after the revolutionary war. We can’t send them back and the more we p *** them off the worse it will be in the future. So what do we do,” the e-mail states. “I say the governor needs to try to enforce the law and sign the letter of understanding... and at least we can send the troublemakers back. Sure we are being overrun but we are being outpopulated by the blacks also. What is the answer, only time will tell.”

UPDATE: Altes apologizes.
UPDATE II-IV: LULAC has called for Altes' removal from office. Release on jump. Also on the jump, a statement from Democratic chair Bill Gwatney. And the ACLU has condemned Altes' remarks.
LULAC NEWS RELEASE
Washington, D.C. -- LULAC members and allies are strongly urged to call Republican Arkansas State Chairman Dennis Milligan and the National RNC Chairman Mike Duncan, and demand that State Senator Altes be removed from office immediately. On November 14, 2007, State Senator Altes’ sent a racist email to a constituent calling for the deportation of all the undocumented immigrant population and lamenting that the county could not do the same to the African American population in the state. He expresses frustration that whites are being “overrun” and “out populated by the Blacks”.
The text of Altes’ email reads as follows: “All politics are local and I am for sending the illegals back but we know that is impossible,” said Altes. “We are where we were with the black folks after the revolutionary war. We can’t send them back and the more we piss them off the worse it will be in the future. So what do we do. I say the governor needs to try to enforce the law and sign the letter of understanding with the INS and at least we can send the troublemakers back. Sure we are being overrun but we are being out populated by the blacks also. What is the answer, only time will tell.”
State Senator Altes, the answer for you is to resign and put an end to your divisive remarks.
The State Senator’s disparaging remarks come at a time in our nation when the levels of hate crimes against Latinos have risen by more than 25% since 2004. According to the recent FBI Hate Crime Statistics Report, Hispanics now comprise 63% of the total victims that are targeted based on ethnicity or national origin, compared to 2004’s alarming figure of 51.5%.
“While Dennis Milligan, the state Republican chairman, has insisted that Altes apologize for his disrespectful remarks, the State Senator still remains in office,” said LULAC National President Rosa Rosales. “LULAC urges that both the National and Arkansas RNC Chairmen do the right thing and demand that Altes step down from office.”

Denounce Altes’ hateful remarks!
The League of the United Latin American Citizens, the largest and oldest Hispanic membership organization in the country, advances the economic conditions, educational attainment, political influence, health and civil rights of Hispanic Americans through community-based programs operating at more than 700 LULAC councils nationwide.
STATE DEMOCRATIC PARTY RELEASE
Statement from DPA Chairman Bill Gwatney on remarks by Sen. Altes
As a former member of the Arkansas Senate and now the Chairman of the Democratic Party of Arkansas, I am shocked and appalled by the recent remarks made by Sen. Denny Altes.
His remarks were inappropriate, divisive and racially insensitive.
I’m pleased that Sen. Altes apologized for his ugly remarks against his fellow Arkansans. I hope his future public policy decisions reflect his atonement.
ACLU NEWS RELEASE
Today the American Civil Liberties Union of Arkansas condemned the comments delivered by State Senator Denny Altes in an email to former Fort Smith Mayor Bill Vines, in which Altes compares being “overrun” with illegal immigrants to being “out populated” by black people. “I am for sending the illegals back but we know that is impossible. We are where we were with the black folks after the revolutionary war. We can’t send them back and the more we piss them off the worse it will be in the future…. Sure we are being overrun but we are being out populated by the blacks also.”
“Senator Altes’ remarks make it all too clear that the sentiment that too often colors the immigration debate is not as alleged concern for American workers, or cost to taxpayers, but just your garden-variety racism,” said ACLU of Arkansas executive director Rita Sklar. “The Senator could not have made it clearer: for some at least, the high-toned arguments about the burden undocumented immigrants allegedly put on state coffers and state jobs are a sham, while the truth is that some people feel that there are just too many Latinos (and African-Americans) around; their racism and fear of being in the minority is what propels some of the cruel and irrational proposed immigration policies we’ve seen in recent years. What we need is a rational debate on immigration based on facts, not fear.”
Several legislative proposals were put forth in the 2007 Arkansas Legislative Session, including one to make it illegal to provide shelter to hungry and homeless people who are not in the country with the proper documentation. That proposal did not make it out of the Senate Judiciary Committee.

Comments
"We are where we were with the black folks after the revolutionary war. We can't send them back ... " -- Altes
If that's the extent of his grasp of US history, he has no business trying to set policy, even on a local level. I might let him rake my leaves, but only if he'd keep his mouth shut.

I love the kitschy, retro aspect of the '50s--tailfins on cars and cool old refrigerators with nice lines and lots of chrome.
But I sure don't like many of the social aspects of that caucasian-heavy era, and I don't like that certain legislators are unaware that this is 2007.

I hope Altus doesn't fall on his sword over this. The way he said what he said was stupid and clumsy but that isn't any reason to act like he doesn't believe his own words. Nothing is worse than watching a public figure claim they didn't mean what they just said. Don't recant. Take it like a man Denny.
What will the cultural impact of importing hordes of semi literate unskilled laborers into this country be? Has the state of California benefited from 40 years of unchecked immigration? Do we in Arkansas want to live in a state like California in 40 years? These are all questions we need to be asking. Altus isn't the most articulate man but at least he's asking questions about this sort of thing.
Also, can someone tell Dennis Miligan to shut the hell up. No one cares what you think.

The sainted one and I had dinner the other night with some long-time Fort Smith friends, and somehow we got to talking about Denny and some of his utterings. One of the friends said, "Well, Denny is a buffoon, and it's just as simple as that." His wife replied, "No, babe, Denny's not a buffoon, because Denny's not joking when he's running his mouth, he's serious." I think I'm with her on that. One thing is for sure: A Travis Miles, Altes is not

Raises an interesting philosophical or psychological question: Are there bigots and racists who think of themselves as bigots and racists, or do they all think they are not? Twice he refers to "the blacks" or "the black folk" - how offensive! A sweeping statement about [all] blacks would be offensive enough, but to place the article in front as though "the blacks" are a monolithic class (or worse, an object) is prima facie racist - yet Denny doesn't see it.
Scary.

I think it's news-worthy that the chair of one of the state committees chastises a sitting state senator. I think it's also important for it to be published so that the citizens know Denny Altes does not speak for all Republicans. Dennis may not either, but the balancing viewpoint needed to be expressed. Racism can flourish primarily when it is not challenged and defeated.

We all have our burdens to bear. Denny is ours. We are not known for sending leaders or even mental competents to the legislature but Denny makes Gunner Delay look good. The tragedy is that this will not hurt him with his base. They mainly feel as he does but are smart enough not to put it into an email.. Please note that Bill Vines is not the mayor of Fort Smith. He was once but is no more. Vines is the champion of the military in which he served at the air guard base in FS. He is a hale fellow well met but like our friend Huck it is all about him. In other words he is totally full of shit. Our mayor is Ray Baker and has been for many years. He is the one that will show up at your child's birthday party and proclaim it Susie Smith Day. His heart is in the right place but his act is clownish. Denny is a dunce but we deserve what we elect. I can say that he never has and never will get my vote.

"I apologize and I am sorry if it hurt anyone's feelings.... I'm sorry if it offended anyone, but I didn't consider it a racist remark," Altes told The Associated Press Thursday.
That is not an apology. "I apologize" or "I'm sorry" should never be followed by the word "if". The correct word is "that". This statement also addresses one of Theo's questions.

One of the unintended consequences of term limits is that the limited seem to keep turning up in the form of their spouses or other offices. It seems that Mr. Altes, soon to be term limited from the senate, will now run for the House. He has spent 2 terms there but is entitled to one more. My guess is that he will be elected. He has a lot of money and a Baptist/Repub base. Also it is now known that former Sen. Bill Walters, husband of St. Rep. Shirley Walters will run for the House seat the soon to be term limited Ms. Walters will vacate. Shirley will run for the Sen. to replace term limited Ed Wilkinson. Confusing? Sounds like the plot line to the old tv series "Soap". Where is Billy Crystal when we need him.

Jesus! I turn my back for 15 minutes and not only is our boy, Dimmy, wanting to boxcar all Mexicans back to Mexico, he's bemoaning the fact that we can't ship the black folks back to Africa. Of course I agree with everything FortSmithBoy said, there is something in our water over here on the left side of the state that causes a high ignorance level in the people we send to Little Rock and DC.
How could Dimmy and old Bill Vines make us look worse? They could have added what a bitch it is that women are allowed to vote. They could have said Hitler's fires weren't hot enough after all. They might have mentioned the joys of having sex with your own children. Or how they're the ones who stole JFK's brain from Parkland Hospital back in 63. What? What more can all these people from Fort Baptist do to make my part of the state look worse? For the record the black population of FS is about 10% as it's always been. We have no racial problems, haven't had since the last lynching in front of 1st National Bank in 1919. Dimmy's delusional!
Imus is gone, not because he said he wanted black people sent back to Africa...he just said nappy headed hoes. Trenty Lott nearly lost his seat in the Senate because he said Strom Thurman had the right ideas in 1948. Strom Thurman the old racist who fathered a black child before he started attacking black people, not to be confused with Cheney's plane, The Spirit of Strom Thurman, you know the plane that holds the Airstream trailer Cheney sits in during flights. Now...where did Dimmy, good Republican that he is, get such an anti-black attitude? Oh I wonder?
And to old Bill Vines.......son, your email address pretty much says it all. FSBoy knows you too, and since birth it's always been all about you.....us vast people with a brain you're talking about do not agree with Dimmy at all. But we have always laughed about the Bill Vines ego, on that we all agree.
I call for Dimmy Altes to resign immediately! And shame on the people of Greenwood if they continue to elect the Walter's dynasty year after year after year. Are there no good people IN Greenwood? Let's see some of Dimmy's email to Princess Shirley!
I may have to change my address from Fort Smith, to East Moffett, Oklahoma. I am trey disgusted!

i don't know Altes history, but it is nice to know ole' Wild Bill Vines is still around, for he was exceedingly gracious to me upon my nomination to West Point (despite my obvious lust for his daughter Laura) and even Crazy Ray Baker (who by the grace of the gods, i didn't have to endure his history teaching, as i was lucky enough to learn from Keith Mahaffey lessons that have lasted a lifetime and for which i am forever grateful)
and if it is any comfort DBI, i lived all over the state after five years in Ft. Smith, and in comparison and even while i was there, i've never considered it to be a part of Arkansas proper (which i believe may account for much of my ingrained "contrarian" streak) perhaps a consequence of it's heritage as a "border town".
oh well, 'tis nice to read/hear old familiar names, even when they're embarassing themselves.

Denny Altes has a well-worn reputation at the state Capitol for being an idiot savant--without the savant. Altes combines ignorance, bigotry, and buffoonery into a jackass cocktail of embarrassing proportions--routinely scaling the peaks of Mount Asinine.
Aside from Altes' truly frightening resemblance to Norman Bates (the serial killer of Psycho film fame who dressed up in his dead mother's clothes) Altes is arguably the least effective State Senator in recent history.
Favorite Altes story: a bill of his to grant a single gas station in Fort Smith a tax break was voted down by the Senate Revenue and Taxation Committee. A few weeks later, Altes brings back a suspiciously similar bill, prompting one of the committee members to ask, "Senator Altes, how is this bill different than the one we didn't pass a few weeks back?" Altes: "The bill number is different."
Altes--and this hasn't been mentioned in any news accounts I've seen--is the Senate Republican Leader (!) Altes plotting legislative strategy is a macabre proposition...the Senate Republicans would probably have better luck slapping a suit on a Chia Pet. At least Chia Pets don't send e-mails.

Ya know the problem over here is that the damn Baptist turn out more voters than the rest of us can muster. Their hand picked goobers usually win every time. It looks like their candidates are picked on the basis of who brought the worst food to a pot luck dinner. They're never chosen for their brain power and god...how it shows. Well-meaning Peggy Jeffery who couldn't find her way out of an elevator without help. Our current crop of Medley, Altes, and Glidewell, exports like the Boozman brothers, even AsaAsaAsa......Why does God hate Fort Baptist?
Since the Baptist sold all their big buses when the nickels and dimes of poor kids quit cutting it, I don't know how they get their sheeple to the polls each time...but by Allah they do. And everyone we elect to office makes Pine Bluff and Forest City look twice as smart. Bill Clinton thought teacher testing was a good idea. Maybe it's time we started candidate testing before each election.I know, we need one of those retina measuring machines to test candidates.
We could hook a potential candidate, especially Republicans up to the machine, flash a picture of Jesse Jackson at them and look up their score on the Hate Meter. Those registering KILL KILL KILL should be disqualified from running for office. It is becoming more clear why we're 49th decade after decade. Resign Dimmy!

Man do you liberals live in LALA land. To the idiot talking about Senator Altes grasp of history. I would like to point out that there was indeed a movement after the revolutionary war and even the civil war to send blacks back to Africa. Read up on Marcus Garvy and also how the country of Liberia was founded. Bet you didn't know that Liberia was a country created for former Black American slaves DUH. Maybe it is you who lacks the grasp on history. Seriuosly I wish there was a way to pack all you Liberals up on a bus or a boat and ship you to one of these Turd World countries where there are plenty of "minorities" for you to love on. Chances are they wouldn't be very tolerant of your whites asses. I'm glad the Senator had the balls to tell it like it is. It's just unfortunate that he didn't stand by it.

If you ever want to be sure something is horribly wrong, just look for an endorsement from Chris Quimby, Arkansas's homegrown KKK'er. Dimmy Altes must be crying into his pillow just a little less now that he knows Quimby is on his side.
I am fully aware of the movement to send the black people back where they came from. But does it make it right? Hell no. But after our history lesson, Mr. Quimby gets back on point and gets back to hating. The ugly truth is that there are far more people in America like Quimby and Altes then we care to admit, they just have enough brains to keep their true feelings hidden. This explains why we continue to have racial problems and why racists still get elected to public office.
It's how Vice President Satan gets away with flying his silver torture trailer around in a government plane named after one of the worst humans ever to hold office. What's next? Will Cheney's next plane be named The Spirit of James Earl Ray?
Dimmy is crying not because he's offended black people, but because he's murdered his political career. Resign and haul your trash in shame and be happy that you're always welcome at the Quimby hovel.

I guess they wouldn't be able to scapegoat white people for their problems anymore. I guess in your sick demented mind that's wrong. I bet they would like to be rid of whitey just as much as i wish we were rid of them. But NO sick mental freaks like DBI want to drag out this insane social experiment called diversity. My only hope is this failed social experiment dies like communism. Sure it looked good on paper but it doesn't work in reality. Maybe some were interested in sending blacks back to Africa after the Revolution, but I can guarantee it wasn't Southerners -- who fought awfully hard at the constitutional convention to have the number of Congressmen apportioned to each state based on the number of citizens *plus* three-fifths of a person for every slave.
Marcus Garvey did most of his work in the early 20th Century, and died in 1940.
Liberia was established as a colony for *free* blacks, at a time (1822) when the vast majority of black folk in the U.S. were slaves.
Considering that blacks were brought here as early as 1619, I suppose some would be willing to go back to Africa -- the day after all Irish, Italians, Poles, English, etc. etc. head back to Europe. In fact, Chris Quimby, when you get to port over there, send the boat back. We will then ship out to Africa on the very same vessel. We promise.
(I hope Chris Quimby is not a judge in Arkansas; but if he or she is, then I suppose what I don't know won't hurt me.)

That Denny Altes is an idiot is no surprise. That Bill Vines has an email address referring to the Confederate States of America is - he's conservative but too much of a self-promoter to reveal his racism (I thought.) The most interesting part of this story, for me, is who outed the email. Apparently there has been some forwarding of correspondence by Altes or Vines - I suspect by Vines - to a circle of acquaintances who were comfortable with his moniker. Vines also supposed they were comfortable with these attitudes. Hurray for the person who forwarded the whole sordid mess to some news organizations.

Probably the same way Blacks have been "legally" displacing whites out of the inner cities. Make it so unbearable for them that they leave on their own free will. Probably some loud speakers blaring country music or better yet Scottish Bagpipes 24/7 would do the trick. Citizen, that's a funny word. The only time Blacks want to act like citizens is when they think whitey is keeping them down.

Really DBI you should get up to date on your modern science and just who settled America first.
http://www.whiterevolution.com/PAED.html
http://www.utexas.edu/courses/stross...1stpersons.htm
Turns out the Mongolian Indians were'nt the first to settle America. Stick that in your peace pipe and smoke it.
I hate to break it to you DBI but up until the last 150 years or so non whites in America could not vote, own land and were basically used as farm equipment. America was a supremacist nation in those days and there was nothing diverse about it because blacks were about the equivelent to a mule. Indians were red savages and Asians were nothing more than railroad machinery. None of them were considered to be even really human and were treated as such. It might not have been all white but don't think for a second they weren't trying to make it that way.
You know it is funny how your mind revolves around penis's and such. Are you sure you aren't some old druken closet queer that has a black penis fetish? You wanna know what got me involved in the White Nationalist movement? Lets just say you can't take a small town Arkansas white boy and put him in an inner city memphis school district and get a liberals desired results. There is just something about a boy having to fight for his life against black savages to get an education that didn't sit to well with me i guess. I could pull a fast one and say I blame blacks for me being a racist but it is much more complicated than that.
But Quimby, if we were to follow your advice, we'd all have to leave. Remember, this was Indian land, we intruded on them. We killed them down to a number we could control. Now they're getting their revenge with their casinos. Good for them.
