Sports rap
On account of various errands, I was driving around quite a bit tonight and listening to sports talk shows. Is it just me? Or is it a given that Houston Nutt is toast at Arkansas? Even if the Hogs beat the Tigers?
I don't really have a dog in this hunt. But I do have a dog in the hunt for the head of the state's largest university campus (John) who turned the investigation of harassment of a student (Mitch) over to a friend (Houston) of the person (Teresa) who did the harassing. And then proclaimed the whitewash an appropriate response. I'm also not much impressed by a counsel for, nominally the university, who thinks he's a counsel to protect whitewashers, not the public interest. It's a sewer in Fayetteville, folks. If they do boot Houston, it will cost millions to buy out his contract and all those suspiciously extended contracts of his assistants. Who ordered that? I hope to find out. If the FOI law still applies to the University of Walton. And if there's a Fayetteville judge with the fortitude to say so.

Comments
Completely off topic--Nova tonight had a fantastic documentary tonight on the Kitzmiller evolution case in Dover, Pennsylvania. Brought to you with the support of The Arkansas Times.
So, thanks.

I'm not sure what prevailing public interest would be served by a further investigation of this issue will serve, regardless of the rather dubious and ill-conceived investigation (loose term) previously conducted. How would the public be served by wasting another cent of taxpayer money on this effort? Mitch wasn't the first athlete in the state's history to be criticized in appalling fashion and certainly won't be the last.
Let Nutt's on the field record stand on its own and be the ultimate determining factor in considering his fate. My suspicion tells me that alone will be enough to tip the scale in the favor of what most everyone seems think and want to happen - his ouster.
As for Max "having no dog" in this fight ... I'm skeptical. His references to the UofA as the "University of Walton" and his obvious hate for those that run the "UofW" tell me otherwise.

i am sure it was frank. he knew he was gone and houston kind of held him up to not leave for lsu or nebraska. it was a bad move but frank didn't want to go through another football coach search and after the bb search problems i can understand why. it will cost the foundation money but not the university so if that is how they want to spend their money, let them. nutt is so bad lets just let him go. he ruined a possible heisman season for dmac and saturday was a perfect example. he did not have the team ready to play. hillis was right. he makes millions and they should have been ready to play but all he has is rah rah and that doesn't work too many weeks in a row. game plans work every week.

Amen to the comment about Nova.
Along similar lines, Sunday night C-Span on its Road to the White House ran candidate John F. Kennedy's Sept. 1960 speech to the Houston ministers on seperation of church and state. I had heard comments about it and perhaps read short quotes. I had never heard the whole speech before. It was great and is just a relevent now, perhaps more so, than in 1960. There is a link to it from on C-Span.org. Click on "American Politics/Road to the White House" and there is a link to the whole hour and a half program. The title is: JFK's Catholicism & Candidates' Wives. The link revolves so you may have to wait until Nov. 11 comes up. It starts with a short report on Romney and then goes to JFK. I highly recommend the JFK part of it.

"Huckabee Poll Surprise in Iowa" It's the headline on DrudgeReport.com right now. Hard to believe the Huckster has come this far in the race. Wow.

Hmm. I think the bloggers have, totally on their own, started an open line here. Would this be considered adverse possession or just the inmates running the asylum?
Can the Huck poll be found anywhere other than Drudge? That site is like Faux News -- it causes brain damage.

Wonder if Reggie Fish got any "harassing e-mails" after muffing the punt that blew any chance of beating Florida.
Wonder if Clint Stoerner got any unpleasant e-mails after his stumble at Tennessee?
Wonder if folks who make a living running Universities and football teams know that, due to the very intensity of their connection to the program, "fans" find ways to contact players?
Wonder if players are told, and most understand, that if they want to play on the state's biggest (athletic) stage they'd better develop thick skin?
Wonder if Houston and Co. could have burned up several weeks from the recruiting trail trying to track down the source, and connection with anyone associated with the program, for every single hate e-mail Fish got last winter.
Wonder why any one player ought to have his e-mails more thoroughly investigated than any other?
Wonder how much time, energy and money it would take to "investigate" every hate e-mail received by every college athlete believed by fans to have blown a big game?
Just wondering.

Wonder if some think Mitch Mustain (God bless him--may he become an All-American at USC) warranted special Golden Boy treatment that fumblers, interception throwers, free-throw missers, baton droppers and those who strike out with ducks on the pond have never gotten at UA or anywhere else?
Wonder if those folk the school needs to hire a special prosecutor to ferret out the truth behind the critical e-mails, and there ought to be a right of action for the affected player to challenge in the state's court's every single investigation that was unsatisfactory to the player and his parents?
Wonder how many lawsuits Reggie Fish could file?

Channel 7 did a feature story tonight on the Tennessee Lottery, proceeds of which go to education. Sure sounded good to me. Strong ticket sales continue over there across the river and lottery proceeds now exceed $1 billion (yes billion with a B) since the lottery opened in 2004 or thereabouts.
Almost 70,000 Tennessee high school students will get scholarships and awards to both public and private colleges this year alone. One young man told the interviewer that he would not be in college today were it not for the lottery. The lottery also helps kids get an early start in learning by providing financial assistance for pre-kindergarten and after school services.
An idea this good will probably go down in flames here in Arkansas, thanks to the preachers and others worried that the poor will gamble away their pennies and baby won't have shoes. And, of course, they're determined to keep the rest of us beyond the reach of Satan. Besides, who needs college? Only 18% of our citizens are college educated and we're doin' jist fine, thank yew.
Hi TAP. I've been wondering the same things. Where the hell you been for the past month?

I suspect he did, but sure hope they weren't sent from the Nutt household.

Didn't realize Ms. Prewett had moved in with the Nutts.
Or was there someone else who sent an e-mail to Mustain that was supposed to be the subjet of investigation?

Hey Durangokid!
I have so much respect for the good folk here, and so enjoy their posts -- except for on Nutt -- that I thought it best that I take a hiatus from dropping by or tossing in my two cents on any subject till the axe drops. . . . or doesn't.
I will be back to be entertained and enlightened when this is all over!

Well, welcome back, TAP. Let me recommend that you stick around, but preserve your mental health by ignoring the Nutt threads. That's what I do with the entirely too abundant Huckabee threads found here, at least most of the time. I've found that by doing this, I drink a lot less and sleep a lot better. Cheers!

Click on blue name for Huck poll site alternative to Drudge. I thought he was already in second place in Iowa. Maybe he gained some ground on the Mittster.
TAP and Durango, the comment about thin skin might also be taken to heart by the coach. Siccing a lawyer on a fan seems a little extreme. He hasn't had to put up with half of what Nolan
Richardson did.
And Arch and WildBill, cut it out -- you're dragging down the level of discourse by discussing issues of substance.

I don't have a dog in this Houston Hunt, either.
However, the friends or family of a coach have absolutely no reasons to be sending anything but supportive e-mails to a player. Period. If you're the player, how do you feel when someone you know is friends with your head coach is harassing you?
Sure, these coaches are paid to win football games but on another level they're supposed to be a mentor to some of these players. Part of that is trying to protect them from the idiot fan base that exists at every school. It's implied that includes the family as well. Could you imagine Joe Paterno letting something like this go on? Hardly. Nutt should be fired for this incident alone, regardless of what his record is.
Nutt's social circle seems to be a little too involved with all this. (They sure do bring a lot of drama to the table.) If TAP is Teresa (and I suspect she is), you should be ashamed of yourself. Why are you so hateful?

Had Nutt reacted to the email the way OSU's Mike Gundy did to an out of line sportswriter much of this mess would be water under the bridge.

Wild Bill, RE: JFK's appearence before the Houston, TX ministers in 1960.
The white haired preacher who had one of the more contentious exchanges with Kennedy was K. Owen White pastor of the First Baptist Church of Houston. Before being "called" to Houston he was pastor of Little Rock's First Baptist Church.

"TAP and Durango, the comment about thin skin might also be taken to heart by the coach."
You'll get no argument from me on that one, Vegan. All of this is truly a regrettable chapter in Razorback history. So many mistakes have been made by so many.
First mistake, in my humble opinion: A high school superstar arrogant and flip enough to call a university coach "a dork" and then sign up to play for that coach. Second mistake: A university coach not mature enough to ignore the insult and move on. Third mistake: A friend and a spouse setting their keyboards on automatic fire with stupid emails. Fourth mistake: "Fans" already at odds with Nutt seizing upon the aforementioned to advance their cause of getting the fella out of here.
These and all the other exercises in poor judgment over the past year have hurt the program just as much, perhaps even more, than they've hurt Nutt. No matter where one may stand on the situation, I think all of us are ready to get past it and move on. Nutt can (and should) begin the process by saying, "I'm outta here."

I'm sure you don't have a problem with people sending emails to players Teresa Ann Prewitt. The fact of the matter is that NO ONE should be sending emails to kids in college playing an amateur game.
Yes, I'm sure some nutt job sent Reggie Fish emails. But then all our dads couldn't be heroes by catching touchdown passes from Papa Nutt in Okie State scrimmages.
Yes, I'm sure some nutt jobs sent Clint emails. But I bet Clint's gotten more emails lately because he's been a down right idiot. It's a wonder Nutt isn't still throwing Clint under the bus.
Yes, I'm sure Nutt and all the PTB knew about your email WAY before anyone stepped in to do anything about it. Yes it was, and it is STILL wrong to send hate mail to kids.
Yes, I'm sure kids do realize that the higher up you go in life the more pressure they can receive. It's just that most expect support from their coaches, not petty jealousy and insane actions by the coaches best friends.
Yes, I'm sure Houston and his superiors spent just as much time investigating the Reggie Fish emails as they did the Mitch Mustain ones.
Yes, one player should have his email investigated more than others if that particular email came from the coach's "sis", copied to many other coaches and their wives, and then forwarded by his wife and announced as funny. Hey sis, it's not funny. It's repulsive, juvenile, and irresponsible of everyone involved.
Most of the time players receive email from crack pot hicks who have nothing better to do. That this email was sent from the head coach's family's close friend, someone who considers herself part of their egotistical family is a whole different matter. That you're too idiotic to understand this is not the problem of the people that are standing up for what's right.
Special treatment? Please, elaborate how Mitch got special treatment? Because he couldn't wear adidas shoes because of his feet? Because he didn't want to play the quarterback position with linemen shoulder pads? HA! How dare he want to do his best!
I can't even read that next to last question. Sherry or Grit need to teach you how to do punctuation.
Reggie can file just as many as Mitch has up to this point. Zero. But if Teresa Ann Prewitt sent Reggie an email like she sent Mitch, then I wouldn't blame him.

Also, Nutt is a million dollar coach and a 50 year old man. Shouldn't he be able to handle things that Jr. High and High School coaches handle on a daily basis? If players calling him a "dork" and "Little League Parents" are too much for him, maybe he's in the wrong business.

"If players calling him a "dork" . . . . (is) too much for him, maybe he's in the wrong business."
I think you and I are suggesting much the same thing, NWASooner (see "Second mistake" in my first post.
How presumptuous some of you folks are. Those who have been reading this blog a long time know that TAP is a lawyer and former sportswriter, and one of the most respected posters here on a host of issues, sports being just one of them. Teresa Ann Prewett (is "Ann" really part of her name?) is a Little Rock physical therapist.

TAP....is not Prewett.
The mere fact that TAP has stayed away from this blog due to the controversy makes that an easy determination....let alone the bits of Biographical facts previously posted by TAP.
TAP....I have enjoyed your comments on other matters. I find myself stirred here to blast away at your earliest 2 posts on this topic. I ain't gonna do it.
I will say though that if I were a personal friend of someone as under fire as Nutt is right now...I too would avoid all internet sites where opinions or facts concerning that person would be posted.
I now try to ignore a lot of the Bush crap for the same reason. I can have no real impact on the outcome of that situation. I find myself sick....physically ill....when I get into those serious discussions anymore.
I know to others the comparison of those two people and their actions and fate may not equate....but I figure you get where I am coming from.
I would also like to buy you a drink along with durango once this is over.
Maybe we can discuss old rock & roll or something.

Gee whiz.
Just came back to say this --
TAP = Troy Anthony Price. Former LRCHS free safety who had the distinction of being beaten by Nutt to Farrell in practice on a regular basis back in 1974. Former sportswriter for the Jonesboro Sun. Presently engaged as father of a brilliant LR Hall student, moonlighting as LR lawyer.
Gee whiz.
The conspiracy theorists around here.....
Okay, I'm out again until the Nutt thing is over.
Peace be unto you all . . . .
