Tax increase
A reader reminds me of a little-noticed tax increase adopted by the last 2003 legislature, but just now about to take effect (thanks Steve Harrelson for correction). It removes the $2,500 cap on application of local sales taxes, except on sales of cars, boats, planes and mobile homes. For example, as the illustration shown on the state's information sheet indicates, a $3,000 plasma TV in Fayetteville now costs about $16 more because the full local sales taxes apply.
(Hey, here's a bonus for oppo researchers. Another tax increase to lay on the Huck.)

Comments
This was actually adopted by the 84th General Assembly back in 2003 but not scheduled to go into effect until 1/1/08 (after being postponed by the 85th and 86th). It's all a part of the uniformity requirement contained in the Streamlined Sales Tax Act, which I opposed. Retailers who routinely ship merchandise across the state (and outside the state) are in for some serious changes when levying sales tax on each purchase.
Here's the original 2003 Act:

A few service providers who do business in NWA will be collecting about 6-7 different tax rates. For small
service companies this will be a compliance nightmare or else their accounting programs will require some serious modifications, when such modifications are possible.
But for Springdale and Fayetteville uncapping local rates should help both cities who happen to be experiencing budget shortfalls.

Rep. Harrelson - Thanks for the info, but the IP address you supplied is not a public address. It is a private IP address that is accessable only on your local area network.
I believe this link will work for everyone -

"Another tax increase to lay on the Huck."
Please, when making comments like this, make sure you refer to him as "presidential candidate Mike Huckabee" so all of the Google searches will find it.
Thank you.
