The perfect coach
John Brummett comes up with a job description for the next Hog football coach. Among the suggestions:
Do not hire any kinfolks.
Make sure your friends understand that they must never send any hateful e-mails to any of your players.
Make sure your wife understands that you treasure her loving loyalty, but that she must never sit before a computer keyboard while angry.
Do not whine that you never get to play Vanderbilt to pick up that easy victory.
For goodness sakes, don't then get beat by Vanderbilt.

Comments
I'm sure I won't be the only one to add my $.02.....
Make sure your family and circle of friends understand that you are the coach. They are welcome to give advice, but you are as welcome to ignore it as you are the advice from all other fans.
When you're ahead in the 4th, be careful and don't let your play-calling overstep your team's desire to win.
Don't be afraid of being overshadowed by a good QB (notice we only had one during his tenure?)
If there are tough schools in your conference (and there are) and you never beat them, even with very talented teams, don't blame the team.
You're getting paid several times what your fans make. We may not know the right call, but whether through tax dollars or donations to the Razorback Foundation, we're paying your salary. You can fool some of us some of the time but not all of us all the time. We can be less than fun to deal with or we will love you to pieces. Your choice.

John John John, what a lamo post. You still don't get it. The mantra of the coach situation is for the agins and the fers to bemoan the fate of the "Great Hawg". The coach is simply the kick start to git everyone a jawing. They don't want no smoothie, they wants someone to bitch about!
And another thing while I'ma at it, I'm still ticked at you giving huck a pass. He's a gasbag that deserves to be punctured. All four of ya, that is you, the huck, chuck & rick would make a great tag team match, held in one of the cowbarns on the fairground, freshly exited by all them FFA cows from up in NW Ark., no holds barred, penned in until one of yas hollers enuf. Then you could righteously write that the 4 of yas was going on a tour of all the Iowa cowbarns to show and tell everyone how yere gonna save the good ole US of A. Unless of course huck was accidentally pinked by a pitch fork in the aforementioned match.

Advice for the powers to be who hire the next coach: pick someone and wife who aren't thin skinned. It's downright unseemly for a headcoach -- former headcoach? -- to whine about how hurtful it is to have someone in the mall ask his wife if he'll have any luck keeping some of the team out of the pokey next season.
And while they're at it, maybe they should place more emphasis on football players' good behavior, as in "Son, if you want to play on this team, you'll have to work at it, on and off the field."
Ok, ok, too much to hope for, right?

Any coach inclined to seek meaningful advice from a newspaper writer would gain much more from the counsel of Harry King than anything Brummett might offer. But, then, Brummett (like his buddy, Wally) has never been one to wait around for solicitation, has he?

Other items to add to that list:
- The coach must understand that he is part of the great trifecta of leaders in this state (the other two being the governor and the individual fan's minister/pastor/priest). Act accordingly, with the understanding that he will be given a great deal of trust, loyalty, and scrutiny.
- The coach must understand that what his players do off the field is always his responsibility, so it is in his best interest to keep the players out of jail, bar fights, drug houses, drag races, and other activities that he would not practice personally. While this may seem obvious, that has not always been the case to previous occupants of this position.
- The coach must understand that he is the top-paid public employee of this state, and by that will be held responsible by everyone and too everyone, regardless of whether or not they care about Hog football. He will be subject to the same level of ethics and transparency of any other state employee or elected official.
- The coach must understand that whatever happens, whenever it happens, whoever it happens to, and whatever circumstances caused it to happen, when it comes to Hog football, HE IS RESPONSIBLE. Don't even think about trying to explain your way out of it or away from it, because whatever "it" is, it is your responsibility to address/rectify/apologize for.
Sadly, these things seem obvious to some people. I think we've gone so long that most of us don't realize other coaches at other schools live up to these standards.

When it comes to discipline players are suspended and disciplined in all schools for "violation of team rules". Never is it specified what team rule was violated. Never has the team rules been requested by an FOI. What are these team rules and where can we find them. It seems that it is a ruse to hide the offense for which the young jock is being disciplined. How about it new coach to be announced later, what are the team rules.

Also...can our next head coach-golden parachute recipient please have a normal name like Johnson or Smith? Maybe it's time we had a female head coach?

I think Janet Huckabee would be a good coach for the Razorbacks!
