The wacky world of politics
Another note on the upside-down nature of Mike Huckabee's candidacy. The liberal Hendrik Hertzberg of the New Yorker has a lead Talk of the Town piece coming that will speak favorably of the former Arkansas governor. That will tie neatly into the disfavor with which Huckabee is being received in some ultra-conservative circles, such as Jonah Goldberg in today's NY Post. Goldberg finds him scarier than Ron Paul for his economic populism.
Indeed, Huckabee represents the latest attempt to make conservatism more popular. Contrary to the conventional belief that Republicans need to drop their opposition to abortion, gay marriage and the like in order to be popular, Huckabee understands that the unpopular stuff is the economic libertarianism: free trade and smaller government. That's why we're seeing a rise in economic populism on the right married to a culturally conservative populism. Huckabee is the bastard child of Lou Dobbs and Pat Robertson.
As I"ve said before, Huckabee is, in many ways, a better Democratic candidate than Republican, particularly in Southern states.

Comments
mo tidbits...
Ron Paul reports raising over $9 MILLION in the past two months, while supporters plan an even more ambitious 'Tea Party' funddrive day for December 16. their goal this time is $10 million in ONE day.
Mikehuckabee.com reports MH raised $1.14 million so far this month, on top of October's ($800k?)
All of which begs some mighty curious questions about media coverage, measuring candidate's in the 'money' primary, polls, flux, etc.
Meanwhile the two staunchest supporters of W's War have been turned out in the past month, Poland and Australia, both with new leadership vowing to pull their troops OUT.
During which time, the US $ has lost over 11% of it's value on the world's currency markets, while OIL has gained over 20%. The DOW sheds 1000+ points concurrently. Pakistan goes martial, sliding closer to civil war (with nukes laying about too) and now Lebanon has had it's fill of "democracy" as well. And btw, whatever happened to Burma?
Do you wonder if the rest of the world combined is trying to tell U.S. something ?
All climaxing on a day when synchronicity rears it's head(line) of a cruiseship hitting an iceberg (but all are rescued) as the author's of the end-time books "Left-Behind", write letters to support Huckabee.
strange days indeed.

Laugh of the week: With my own little ears I heard Fred Barnes (the Weekly Standard drone) tout Bob Novak as an example of completely non-partisan reporter. It's stuff like this that make the right look so utterly foolish (and sometimes the left). There's no way that most sane people could keep a straight face while arguing that someone like Michael Moore is not partisan. I couldn't even keep a straight face while sitting across from someone who made such arguments...pretty sure that's ONE reason I'm not sitting across from em.

Wait, what? You yourself had a post just yesterday saying Huckabee was "soft" on immigration. Now you reproduce an article comparing him to the most rabid Mexican-hater out there?
I wonder if Goldberg discloses that National Review Online, where he is employed as an editor and frequent contributor (both as a regular columnist and a blogger) accepted $10,000 from Mitt Romney last year? Click on my name for its very belated "disclosure."
I've noticed you're making more and more "Huckabee is a liberal" posts since no one any longer comments in, and the national media has dismissed, your "Huckabee is unethical" posts. Bravo for new meme! But I still maintain that no one will take you seriously because you're too rabidly obvious in hating Huckabee.

Good spin attempt Prouster! Some more of that Bush stratigery by bashing Max when he says something good about Huckabuck. I've said before that I'd turn my dogs loose on Cheney or Bush if I found them wandering in my yard. But that's not what I'd do if I found Huckster creeping up on my porch. I hate Cheney and Bush....I don't hate Mike Huckabee. I think he's a petty little egomaniacal crook, but heck, Fort Baptist was founded by petty little egomaniacal crooks....that's far far from being baby killers like Cheney and Bush.
Who knows Cheney and Bush's true twisted dangerous goals? We all know Huck's only goal is to become filthy rich and famous like a saggy, balding Rod Stewart. I can't thump Huck for wanting that.....as far as I know Huckabee hasn't killed anyone, hasn't voted to torture anyone and is probably only a danger to an unguarded wallet. Compared to Mark Pryor, I'd tongue-kiss Huckabee.
Huck's got fat kid disease. Fat boys like him grow up wanting to be rich and famous to show those school yard bullies who's boss. Boys with small penises grow up grabbing up all the power and start driving Corvettes after they turn 50. Fat girls, if they finally shed the weight, grow up to be strippers and hookers and the easiest lay you'll ever meet in a bar. See...childhood matters!
So maybe knowing all these facts will easy your mind, Prouster. We dislike Huckabee for all the crooked and mean things he's done since we met him. That's a lot different than hating him...hate hate hating him like we do Cheney and Bush. Know the difference!

"tout Bob Novak as an example of completely non-partisan reporter. It's stuff like this that make the right look so utterly foolish.."
But zelda, they really believe this stuff. They aren't just passing it on with their fingers crossed because this is their mentality.

DBI, all you do is obsess about Bush/Cheney and Huckabee. It gets old. Months ago you predicted his campaign would never pick up steam. Now he's tied for first place in Iowa and tied for second nationally, and you sure do look like a fool.
By the way, there are pictures of Huck as a kid on his campaign website. He wasn't fat. That didn't happen until later.

Carol Shield's family might have something to say about the question of Huckabee's responsibility for her death, DBI, but your diagnosis of childhood character development is spot on, as many have learned that being a cherubic musician from Hope can be a crippling flaw in a chief-executive (but not as fatal as being a drunken, stubborn, oedipal, frat-boy-cheerleader)
and you're right about Hate (as it does destroy the container it is carried in), but it is a hard, fine line to walk, as the proper way to look at any politician is with a weary, contemptuous, loathing... or a loathing, contemptuous weariness, etc.etc. for every Pol, in order to succeed in their terms, requires the assistance of millions (dollars and people)
and finally, as history doth tend to repeat itself, it now looks like Huckabee has inadvertantly painted himself into a corner, whereby he must WIN in IOWA in order not to become another 'surprise second placer' that goes nowhere beyond. (quick ? can you name who finished 2nd in Iowa in 2000 with 30% of the vote?)
"and in conclusion" (still my favorite Bill Clinton quote/1988) ... the MONEY is not yet showing up for MH and the polls are more mist than cloud (with around half being un-fully-decided)
time will tell, sure will be fun to watch (for an entropy fan)

Prouster, I am obsessed with Cheney-Bush, you're 100% correct. If more good Germans had been obsessed with Hitler in the early 30s there might have been no WWII. I think the whole Cheney-Bush administration is a snake pit that is biting us as much as it's biting the people in Iraq. If they aren't stopped they will sink us. I truly hope they wind up biting down on the cyanide pill hidden in their cheek just before their trial starts.
Anyone who watched Charles Rangel on Charlie Rose last night will understand how I feel these days. Charlie R said America's fall from grace bothers him a great deal. We've gone from the greatest nation on earth to a mean ass killer, feared and hated. He said foreigners come up to him now and say, I feel sorry for you, having to live in the bad United States. Of course his and my hurt feelings aren't as important as all the dead in Iraq....I'm sure they'd gladly trade dead for hurt feelings any day.
But Huckabee don't bother me none. I've tried my best to cut down and even cut out commenting on him because he's a small fish and we have big fish to fry ie the Iraq War for Oil. But some times it's just to fun to pass up making a swipe at ole Double-wide. He's the pitiful 2007 Republican excuse for Howard Dean in the 2004 election. Because the rest of the field is so horrible, Huckabee looks like a daisy among cow patties at the moment.
His downfall will come at the hands of some mean ass like Rudy Giuliani, not a Democrat. Democrats aren't every studying on Huck yet and won't get the chance because someone in his own party will take him out. Watch and see if he does well in Iowa. There will be a big target on his back from then on. Hell.....some Republican might even tell us what was on all those crushed hard drives by the time this is over! Run Huck Run!

i am not sure what this ground swell of his means. i saw a film of his headquarters the other day. it consisted of his daughter in a room with 6 or 8 tables set up. the democrats are bringing in 10 or 20 times the money in a day as he does a month. the total money the rethuglicans are bringing in this year is only 60% of what the dems are bringing in. this says a lot. there will be some evening up towards the election but this is real telling. now please prouster, i have seen 2 of the best ball games of the year in the last day and hope for more tonite so lets stop argueing, ok. this is a time of peace and football and for you rethuglicans to admit you are wrong.

I'll admit I'm wrong, happily, when there's some proof of it. Every shred of debate offered this year by your side said Huckabee was toast, he was only running for pocket money, he'd never crack 1%, etc. etc. etc. You guys are in some serious denial. You think money can buy political office, yet turn around and gnash your teeth at the sorry ethical state of the legislature.

I said Huckabee was toast from the beginning and I say it now. 1% or 64% of the Republican vote...who cares.....the Republicans cannot win the White House next year if they run Jesus H. Christ r-Heaven.
Bathe in the glory of the Huckabee successes while they last, Prouster, he's going down in the near future at the hands of those in his own party. We'll see who gets the last laugh! (Snidely Whiplash laughter...........)

Hey prouster...I've been praying for a Huck ticket...all along. But once the guy leaves Iowa he is toast (and I'll be very happy to be wrong). He'll join Pat Robertson as a footnote in Iowa's history book.

I haven't said it, Prouster, because Huckabee scares me. He's as electable a candidate as the Republicans have, and four more years of them might just finish off the country as a decent place to live.
