BREAKING: Big oops

A Wake Forest website says Grobe AIN'T going to Arkansas. The Slophouse has it, too.

Credit the Times' art director's mother, who called to say Grobe hadn't gotten on the Arkansas plane. Don't ask me how she heard that. But it led to our quick webscan (though the Hog boards have been buzzing with this for some time, apparently.)

Malzahn? Bernie Cox?

Clearly, Razorback head coaching jobs ARE chopped liver!

Good job, Whitey! Good job, Jeffie!

Fitz Hill and Charles Ripley at Arkansas Baptist College are available.

But they might not want the job, either.

Bernie Cox before Malzahn. Shoot, let's pull Clyde Horton out of retirement before Malzahn. If the UA powers thought Houston was divisive, that's nothing compared to a Malzahn hire. That would crack the state in half.

Makes me wonder what old Lanny Van Eman is doing these days. I know, I know...he was a basketball coach, though some may disagree with that. But as the U of A works its way down the list of people who know better than jump into our hornet's nest......everyone this side of John Barnhill is going to be in the running.....if they can still walk. Here's where Jeannie C. Riley comes in singing softly

I want to tell you all a story 'bout a Harper Valley widowed wife
Who had a teenage daughter who attended Harper Valley Junior High
Well her daughter came home one afternoon and didn't even stop to play
She said, "Mom, I got a note here from the Harper Valley P.T.A."

The note said, "Mrs. Johnson, you're wearing your dresses way too high
It's reported you've been drinking and a-runnin' 'round with men and going wild
And we don't believe you ought to be bringing up your little girl this way"
It was signed by the secretary, Harper Valley P.T.A.

Well, it happened that the P.T.A. was gonna meet that very afternoon
They were sure surprised when Mrs. Johnson wore her mini-skirt into the room
And as she walked up to the blackboard, I still recall the words she had to say
She said, "I'd like to address this meeting of the Harper Valley P.T.A."

Well, there's Bobby Taylor sittin' there and seven times he's asked me for a date
Mrs. Taylor sure seems to use a lot of ice whenever he's away
And Mr. Baker, can you tell us why your secretary had to leave this town?
And shouldn't widow Jones be told to keep her window shades all pulled completely down?

Well, Mr. Harper couldn't be here 'cause he stayed too long at Kelly's Bar again
And if you smell Shirley Thompson's breath, you'll find she's had a little nip of gin
Then you have the nerve to tell me you think that as a mother I'm not fit
Well, this is just a little Peyton Place and you're all Harper Valley hypocrites

No I wouldn't put you on because it really did, it happened just this way
The day my Mama socked it to the Harper Valley P.T.A.
The day my Mama socked it to the Harper Valley P.T.A.

Need I point out, none of this would have happened if Frank was still AD :-)

Think Arkansas fans have figured out the rest of the country thinks we're bonkers? I will compliment Long for managing to get a lot of coaches nice raises. He ought to get an award from the coachs' association. Grobe's record the last two years was exactly one more win that Nutt and his record the years before that was worse than Nutt's. Our criteria now seems to be down to "he's not Houston Nutt." Pitiful.

Best hire Herring by tomorrow before he announces he's headed to Ole Miss. UA isn't going to do any better than ol' Reggie.

I am flabbergasted that there is support for Malzhan on the Board of Trustees. Talk about turning it into your University of Northwest Arkansas and the end of "The Program."

Damn, this Hogs drama is entertaining though. You can't make this up. You put a little music to this, some catchy tunes, the right casting and you might just have yerself a hit show.

Weeeeeeeoh, Pig Sooooooie! The Musical.
including the show stopping hit:

I'm gonna wash that coach right outta my hair.

with The Buzz Babes as the Pep Squad.

Jeez, you can't turn your back for a minute around here.

We could go back to the origins of college football, just a bunch of the guys tossing the ol' pigskin around, with maybe a friendly English professor showing the lads a few of the finer points. This might start a whole new trend in professional sports. Soccer, anyone?

Something definitely is awry on the hill. This situation mirrors exactly the search for a basketball coach. It certainly appears that no one up there has a clue....other than Frank....if he can still remember what it was.

Jeff Long is in a tough spot. Talk about walking into the firing line. Much of this is not of his making though the coaching search certainly falls in his lap. Still, the pressure to get someone-the right somone--in here ASAP is huge.

I wouldn't want that job. Long will get more scrutiny and second-guessing here than that given to a Supreme Court Justice. And he can't be seen as a puppet to the NWA good ole boys. He'll want to exert some independence at the behest of John White I presume. Tricky all the way around. And the pressure to hold onto recruits is ratcheted up not just daily but hourly in the public mind if not in reality. Now who do you go get. And now, whoever you get, it is going to be seen as desperate. Wow. This will all add fuel--slow buring and White hot-- to the already considerable fire.

Damn. Yesssirrree. I'll take my job over his anytime.

Is it completely out of line for them to consider Herring? Perhaps that's why Houston has taken him because he was giving Reg the opportunity to move up? Just saying. I like Reg and think he might actually do a good job. I would think he'd be better than some on the list. And then if they want Malzahan back as OC - that would be fine, but I really don't think he's (GM) up the challenge of leading an entire SEC team at this point. What a joke if they offer the head Hog job to him. Just my two cents.

Read Brummets column of today at Stephens Media Daily to read some good thoughts on why Reggie is not the guy. Not yet. But then again there is Prozac.

Channel 7's blog seems to intimate that a private money source in Arkansas with ties to Wake Forrest increased the salary offer for Grobe to stay at Wake. Can that be right?

Where is that football version of John Pelphrey?

Is Wally doing this to us? Damn him.

Hank I think the Channel 7 blog said an Arkansas fundraising group ok'd a suplement to the Wake Forest coach if he came to Arkansas, not to stay at Wake Forest. But maybe I misread it instead of you.

When Houston came to Arkansas we hoped that he would return us to the days where we still talked football after september and we didn't talk basketball till football was over.

Well he did it. The football season is over and we are still talking football even though the basketball team is kicking butt on rated teams (Missouri).

Houston did what we asked - just be careful what you ask for.

I knew this dude in college... not much to look at, and not exactly brilliant either, but he thought he was all that and more. Dated this wonderful girl, everyone wondered what the heck she was doing with him. He treated her like dirt, but she took it. Finally she had enough and left him. He thought he'd replace her like that, but no girl with any looks or self respect wanted anything to do with him. He was flabbergasted.
Sound familiar?

What's next, we're turned down by Gerry Faust? Jack Crowe? Its that ridiculous.

I just got a raise of $50K a year after my bosses heard that the UA wanted to interview me. I confirmed that it was the truth, that they did want to talk to me, and I got the raise. I didn't tell them the interview was about some unpaid parking tickets though. Thanks, Jeff Long and John White!

My first reaction is AYSM and I hope that means Are You Shi ttin Me cause I dont want to sound crude.

My second is, UA better get on board with some city's community punishment program to see if there is a washed up former hi school jock doing hard litter pickup for back childpay and a dui ticket....that may be the best bet for a coach who won't back out when he wakes up the next morning.....and change our name from Hogs to Coyotes 'cause a coach would rather gnaw his leg out of that Golden Trap than put on a hog hat for an entire season. This ranks up there with the Guv living in a mobile home. It hasnt reached 1957 shame yet but it is on its way to second place!

Damn...

We got "Altmaned" by Grobe...

And not "no" but "HELL NO" on Malzahn...

I can't believe anyone would talk seriously about hiring Coach Malzahn as the head man. Talk about cutting off your nose to spite your face: "Take that Houston!" Except Houston is gone and best be forgotten.

If you are pleasantly surprised by John Pelphrey (and I am) consider this: the man has NINE seasons of experience as an assistant and four as the head man at a smaller program. Anyone think he'd be doing this well if we had plunked him into the job in his third year of college coaching?

It just seems a cruel thing to do to Coach Malzahn, the fans, the AD and the players.
