Charlie Wilson's War

I'm planning to see the movie soon, but the real life story is entertaining enough.
INSTANT REVIEW: Good flick. Score it 89.73. I might have given it a 89.75 if the hot tub scene had run a few seconds longer.

I'll watch anything with Tom Hanks or Richard Gere in it.

I don't know if I can stand to watch Julia Roberts or not. The last flick I saw of hers was Erin Brok and I got so tired of a wide open mouth and enhanced breasts it got where I didn't even care if Erin won her struggle or not.

Herring, played by Julia Roberts in the Mike Nichols film, tells us she "practically choked" when she read Aaron Sorkin's original screenplay. The movie ended with a shot of the Pentagon in flames, implying that Herring and Wilson (played by Tom Hanks) had abetted Osama Bin Laden and his Al Qaeda crew.
"Can you ever predict a war?" she argues. "The shelf life of a Stinger missile is five years. There's no weapon we got them that can be used today."
Herring also didn't cotton to the way Sorkin had Roberts swearing, spouting evangelical screeds and engaging in martini-fueled romps with Hanks.
"I didn't like the cursing, the drinking, the blatant sex," says the 78-year-old thrice-married Houston socialite, philanthropist and former talk show host. "They turned me into a kooky, hypocritical tart."

Yeah Cato, I understand where you're coming from. If Julia Roberts-Erin came on to me at a bar I'd just say
"those pumped up boobs and excessive lipstick are too much. So find somebody else to go home with"
Yeah, that's what I'd do. Hah!

My wife and I watched the true story of Charlie Wilson's war on the History Channel tonight, look for it and watch if you can. I supposed since he was a Democratic Rep from Texas I am supposed to be cheering my liberal ass off, but I'm not.
Charlie Wilson did exactly what Cheney-Bush has done for 7 years, blaze a trail of his own all the way around the world shipping weapons from one dirty country to the other. In Wilson case it had a happy ending before it had an unhappy ending....unfortunately, the unhappy ending impacted on all of us.
Yeah it's great that the Afghan fighters whipped USSR ass after 10 years of killing that left at least 1 million people dead, 1 million injured and 2 million people displaced. But Charlie Wilson broke ever rule to achieve his military-sexual fantasy of bring the Russians down. He was doing the same thing that Ollie North was doing for the Contras.
Now the not good thing. After the Afghan fighters chased the Russians out, the US turned its face the other direction and next thing we know 9-11. No, Charlie Wilson didn't cause 9-11, but if you watch the true story of Charlie Wilson's war, the US uses every dirty trick in the book to FK with the USSR, as I'm sure Russia is doing the same to us in Iraq today. Payback is a bitch!
While it's going to be fun watching the movie, Charlie Wilson's War, I figure if you watch real close you'll get a good idea why Osama and a growing list of countries hate us.....and with good reason. We like to pretend we're an honorable country, but it's near impossible to find any proof. Our CIA is every bit as horrible as the KGB. The dark side of our government uses billions of our dollars, kinky sex, drugs, bribes, dirty tricks, kidnapping and torture. How does that make us more honorable than any other nasty little dictatorship on the planet. Looks to me that we're taught to believe America is a bright shining star when in reality.......well......our government just plain sucks.
So go on and enjoy this bit of Hollywood fantasy, but as you watch it, pretend it's our war in Iraq and that we're the Russians and we'll meet the same fate 23 years from now when we slink out of Iraq because our country is bankrupt and we've got no more kids to send to be killed in the Bush War for Oil.

I plead guilty as charged on the dirty old man thing, jazzy. Cain't hep myself, babe! We decided at the last minute last night to take in a flick and caught the 10 p.m. showing of Charlie Wilson. Really liked it, the supportive role of Julia Roberts and all. I'd give this one a 9 on a scale to 10. You'll laugh at times, and you might cry, too (the saint did, and I wanted to during the refugee camp scenes, but guys ain't supposed to cry in public, ya know). My self-assigned job now is to read the book and look for a rerun of the real thing on the History Channel.

Please keep in mind with this movie, as in ALL movies, you go to be entertained and not to get a lesson in history. Hollywood completely re-writes history to fit its own script. Take it all with a grain of salt and remember that 99 percent of what you see on film did not even occur. George Armstrong Custer did not have long hair at Little Big Horn nor was he the last to fall. And none of them had sabers. Need I say more?

I read the book when it came out. Loved the book. Loved the movie too. Hanks nails "Chaarlie" om character. If you liked the movie, go read the book as there are more details that will make you laugh out loud as well.....not to say that theres not an embellishment from here or there....I'm most certian that there is. But nevertheless a good read.
almost makes me yearn for the good old days of American politics...I know, I know, disclosure is great and all, but even taking Charlie's story with a grain of salt, its impressive what a little willpower, ingenuity and a lotta luck was able to pull off.
Oh, and DBI, the last line of the movie says it best. I realize that you feel inclined to opine on every subject and post, but watch the movie...wait for the last line.

After watching some of the morning politicos yapping on, I know what's 'really' wrong with this movie (and I don't even have to watch it...): It's sacrilegious 'cause it fails to give God Reagan full credit for single handedly defeating communism.
