Play ball!

UA statement re Darren McFadden's riding around in a loaner Escalade:

“Earlier this week, media reports suggested that potentially improper steps were taken to secure a vehicle for an Arkansas student-athlete. The University immediately initiated a review of the matter. Although the television station that reported the story has publicly apologized for its initial report, the University has continued to vigorously review the matter. The University is appreciative of the cooperation of those who have been involved in the review process. While it would not be appropriate to comment specifically regarding the review at this time, it should be noted that the student-athlete has not been ruled ineligible. We will continue to work judiciously to review this matter.”

it sounds like nothing but they should have waited a week before having him drive the car.

Supposedly the car belongs to his step-mom and she got it from an accident settlement and loaned it to him. If true then it's just some tv station trying to stir up trouble. Mike Conley, the supposed agent in all of this, doesn't even represent NFL prospects and had nothing to do with it.

This is all Houston Nutt's fault!

Is it not astounding that, even though they got it wrong, a local teevee station attempted to develop its own news story?

KARK has the best "brand" in the state with 'Razorback Nation." The sports director and those involved with this story should be terminated. Start over with "credible" sports journalists. These guy will never be trusted.

TAP, you're absolutely correct. It's all HDN's doings, the dirty low-down Rebel. He's undoubtedly been texting the "trick truck" play to McFadden every day the past week, having him run that Escalade right down the middle time after time after boring time. What a bonehead! So predictable! The armchairs need to get that plane flying over Big D immediately pulling a banner that reads, SHOOT NUTT!

I've enjoyed watching KARK squirm since rushing to the streets with that big whopper about Mike Conley negotiating the car deal for Darren. Conley ought to sue them for slander. Don't you know Rob Heverling's face was branding-iron red when he had to post that statement on the station's Web site Friday apologizing for KARK's "Poor standards of reporting." Reporting at KARK in particular and with the media in general seems to have gone to hell, and is getting worse by the day.

If you believe this crap from the U of A, you need to be institutionalized. In 1973 Ike Forte, who could barely read and write, was riding around campus in a "loaner" brand new green Cadillac El Dorado. When he bothered to attend the classes I had with him, he put his head down and slept. Yet, he made better grades that I did.

That kind of stuff has been going on at the U of A forever....and pretending otherwise is stupid. U of A sport is a zillion dollar business. They take care of their stars. Oh yeah.....the Escalade probably belongs to someone's brother's sister's husband and all.....but if we could follow the bread crumbs, they'll lead to the Alumni Mafia.

Let me be clear. I don't give a damn if they give away 50 thousand dollar cars to gifted athletes who fill the stands for every game......just don't lie about it. Leave us understand that it's a big business, they do anything and everything they can to produce winning seasons. It has very little to do with a college education and honor isn't a part of it.

At least the U of A hasn't invaded Iraq and as far as I know they don't torture. Good enough for me...but don't try and play me for a fool after 34 of watching what goes on up on the hill. If we can't have honesty gentlemen, let's at least have a little dignity. Go Hogs!

I must second DBI's truthful post. In 1977 my former Argentine wife was a teaching assistant at UA, dept of English and Foreign Languages, about the time Eddie was making the basketball team something to be noticed. Lots of pressure was brought on the woman to pass some of Eddie's players. She was a delightful, attractive woman with a fiery yet very stubborn streak. Her father was a superintendent of schools in Bia Blanca, Argentina, and she happened to take education very seriously meaning she refused to pump up UA athletes' grades.
She (and me by default) were promised 4th row, center court seats in Barnhill Stadium but no, she stuck to her grading standards. Finally the athletes were transferred to other classes where they earned the standard "C."

KARK does not even have a full-time sports department, its "outsourced" to their sister station in Fayetteville KNWA. Its all done by smoke, mirrors, and a fiber optic line. Its also a bit unusual that KATV doesn't send their top Sports Anchor (Sullivan) to Fayetteville--Could he have ruffled a few feathers up there previously?

If the Alumni Mafia (DBI's words) bought the car, someone should educate them - don't buy a car for the guy who will only play one more game for you. Go buy the car for our top recruit!!

University investigates self, finds out it's the best university EVAR!

DBI has it right. I had Biology with Ron Calcagni at the UA and he made sure he was seated next to the editor of the Traveler for every test. Being no fool, I positioned myself right across from the two of them. As the editor fed answers to Calcagni I snagged some for myself.

Boy hidey! Am I ever gonna have fun with this 'un, conform&bedull. Calcagni is a friend of mine. I see him once or twice a month, and can't wait to see his face when I relate your remembrance of his exam-taking skills. He'll buy my lunch to keep me from spreading the word!

Here's another football player tale: One of my brothers was a UA freshman in '58-59. He recalls that a car in which Billy Moore was a passenger slid down a snow and ice-packed Leveritt Street and collided with a professor who was driving his car on W. Maple. Moore got out and whipped the poor professor's ass while a group of Kappa Kappa Gammas watched in horror.

If I remember the story, Moore was suspended from school for three days.

Durangokid, When you're busting out Calcagni, make sure you say Zoology class, not Biology. I never even took biology, but that Zoo class was a killer.

Zoology it is. I'm about to bust to see the sucka!
