Religious wars

Mike Huckabee's crack about Mormonism, mentioned earlier, sets off a bit of controversy. If he meant no jibe at another's religion, why then did he bring it up?

Comments

expect a press release from Huckabee about two times every day reminding folks that Romney's faith is not an issue

(which also of course simultaneously reminds everyone that Romney is a Morman.)

can't say Huck hasn't learned a thing or two about campaigning from his Arkansas forerunners.

----

He might have lost a ton of weight, but his foot is still big enough to fit in his mouth!

Huck just said he can't part the Red Sea but he can cut red tape...

What a clown...

MAX you ask why did he mention it i'll give my opinion on why because he is a lying baptist Religious BIGOT who bash other religions and smile and laugh like its a normal thing to say hurtful things about others religions faiths romney is just this weeks victim . you should see some of the things he has said about catholics or any other religions romney has got off easy with huckster and his devil comments mike huckabee is not a choice for an american president IMHO he is everything that wrong with America today politics and religion don't mix . id never waste my vote on such a evil preson LIKE Mike Huckabee i never understood why he was elected GOV of arkansas so often never did anything but drive arkansas and its people to the bottom of every list in america( gov last place is what he should be called he will pay for his comments about HIV/AID folks believe me that is evil what he said about people who are ILL he is not a pastor he is a gay bashing AIDS bashing CON man who has fooled many folks over the years pretty tipical of most baptist pastors i know these days its sad he ever says the word (jesus) even he needs to pray for his forgivness i can say that much . Mike Huckabee has blood on his hands with his inaction on Aids/HIV Issue in Arkansas his policies on AIDS has killed folks waiting for MEDS to save there lives . IN ARkansas i for one believe with all my heart he has harmed and KILLED so many folks with Aids in Arkansas with his stupid uneducated opinions on Science and THE HIV/AIDS DISEASE . his inaction has killed folks while he was gov of Arkansas.

"That means that all beings were created by God and are his spirit children.<<

I used to know some "spirit children" back in the 60s but I suspected they dropped
too much acid. After a while every thing became spirit, even my wallet.

Again, Huckabee is a graduate of Southern Baptist institutions and they believe and teach...in their classrooms, in Sunday School and from the pulpit.... that Mormonism is a cult. Huck can't change 'cause it's in his blood.

My understanding is that Huckabee showed the anti-Mormon film The Godmakers to his congregation at Texarkana in the early to mid '80s, as it was also shown at churches around the state. So any national reporter reading this should quiz Huckabee on that.
The line about Satan and Jesus is a lift from the film so to say that he knows little about the Mormon faith is at best misleading and at worst a lie. I'd wager most of his views on Mormonism are based on that film.
Concerns about the film came from organizations like the National Conference of Christians and Jews who said this ...
"The film does not fairly portray the Mormon Church, Mormon history, or Mormon belief. It makes extensive use of half-truths, faulty generalizations, sensationalism, and is not reflective of the true spirit of Mormon faith. We find particularly offensive the emphasis that Mormonism is some sort of subversive plot-a danger to the community, a threat to the institution of marriage, and destructive to the mental health of teenagers. We are of the opinion that the film relies heavily on appeals to fear, prejudice and unworthy human emotions."

More questions some reporter can ask:
Does Huckabee have anyone of the Mormon faith working for him now?
Has he ever appointed a Mormon to any state post in his time as a governor?
Has he hired anyone to advise him on faith-based matters?
If so, how much do they know about the Mormon faith?
Is Huckabee aware of the multiple Arkansas connections to the Mormon faith?
Can he name a single Mormon who lives in Arkansas?

Reading up on the origins and belief system of mormons is a trip. It kinda makes Scientology seem like a rational belief system. Celestial sex, gold plates some dude saw in a hat, and more!

As to the last question, if Huckabee says me or a member of my family, I will laugh and laugh and laugh.
And for enough money, I'd advise Huckabee on Mormon matters. I'm sure he'd want some uber-liberal Hillcrest Democrat hanging around. Hey, at least I don't drive a Volvo, like all my neighbors.

" anti-Mormon film The Godmakers" this is just one of many such video productions made by the right wing loonies in Dallas and the S. Baptists preacher buy then and show them in their churches all across the South in efforts to propagandize their agenda. It works well for them, just as the Kook-Aid did at Jonestown.

I KNEW THIS WAS BOUND TO HAPPEN.

Thanks, Gloves. You got it. Anybody who wishes to can read the origins and beliefs of Mormonism (or Scientology or Christianity or Judaism or Islam, for that matter) online. The planet "Kolob?" The phony "Egyptian" heiroglyphics "deciphered" by con-artist Joseph Smith -- long-since discredited? It's all there.

It's time, and past time, for rational humanity to take this stuff seriously any longer, much less "respect" it as having any legitimate place in governing a democratic republic.

I don't care if Mitt Romney or Mike Huckabee believe in Xenu or the Tooth Fairy. I care deeply that a would-be POTUS "believes" that placing a tooth under his or her pillow or forcing group-think authoritarian fictions and lies on people and policies will magically solve the massive 21st Century issues faced by America and the world.

As for anybody interested in the origins of Christianity (or any of the "world's great religions"), it used to take years of research to piece together the information from myriad sources, so successful was the religious repression of this information. Now, however, it's available to anybody in about half an hour's viewing.

Just go here, scroll down, and click on the video. The information is actually quite beautiful. Moreover, it's based on facts.

I learned long ago never to expect the truth from anybody religious. I've never been disappointed.

HUCKABEE APOLOGIZES ... KINDA/SORTA/WINKWINK,NODNOD (BULLSHIT)

Mr. Huckabee told Wolf Blitzer of CNN:

Actually if you'll talk to the reporter, because he was shocked that that was characterized out of an 8,100-word story, as we were, we thought, good heavens. We were having a conversation. It was over several hours, and the conversation was about religion, and he was trying to press me on my thoughts of Mitt Romney's religion. And I said I don't want to go there. I don't know that much about it. I barely know enough about being a Baptist. And I really didn't know. Well, he was telling me things about the Mormon faith, because he frankly is fairly well-schooled on comparative religions. And so as a part of that conversation, I asked the question, because I had heard that, and I asked it not to create something - I never thought it would make the story.

After the debate today I went to Mitt Romney and apologized to him, because I said, I would never try, ever, to try to somehow pick out some point of your faith and make it, you know, an issue, and I wouldn't. I've stayed away from talking about Mitt Romney's faith.

...HE STAYED AWAY FROM TALKING ABOUT IT SO MUCH THAT NOW ALL HE TALKS ABOUT IS HOW MUCH HE STAYS AWAY FROM TALKING ABOUT IT... VERY CLEVER.

And, Robertogee (why can't people use their real names?), I'm assuming you considered the credibility of all the sources this Web site used? This pseudo-scholar stuff has been around long before the Web and has long been discredited by people who have taken "years of research to piece together information from myriad sources," which you suggest is a waste of time.

Oh, gee, Jeff. I don't know. Maybe the reason we don't use our real names here is because we live in a tiny Huckabee "banana republic" where religious bigots can fire us from our jobs for not "conforming," thus choking off our livelihoods, foreclosing on our mortgages, cutting off our children's educational funds, depriving us of health insurance, etc., etc.

As opposed to living in a more diverse environment like New York City or Los Angeles where telling the truth doesn't carry such provincial penalties? (Yeah, yeah. Next, you'll tell me to move if I don't like it. Except I've LIVED all my life in New York and Los Angeles, and I LIKE living in Arkansas, except for the religious fascism. Those are very real threats to most people. But not to me. I'm retired and don't have to kiss anybody's ass to live well.)

I have no idea what you mean by claiming I've suggested that studying the origins of religions is a "waste of time." Far from that! To anyone claiming their spirituality is the center of their lives, I cannot imagine anything MORE valuable than such a study.

But it ain't gonna happen by regurgitating Revelations. Rather, where did "Revelations" and the Bible originate?

I simply stated that one may save a lot of time by viewing the video link I provided, as to the origins of religions.

Shoot the messenger much, Jeff?

People like Huckabee and Romney are simply parrots who, without question or examination throughout their lives, spew the cliches of the religions into which they were born. "Hate the sin, not the sinner." What B.S.

Scratch their surface with the truth: say, the origin of Easter or Christmas, and these "loving" Christians turn into rabid pit bulls, shrieking, "Are you saying it's all made up?"

These are people indoctrinated into their cults when they were little children. They will go to their graves with the same childish unquestioning incurious obeisance to authority -- at the expense of rationality, science and truth -- because they can make a buck, scam the sheep and foment hatred and division in the name of "Love" to empower themselves politically and economically.

Tithe me, Bubba!

What charlatans. What mental and spiritual fascists.

I couldn't be happier that Huckabee et al., are calling on the rest of us to stand up to them. Hearing "voices" and acting on them is one of the definitions of psychopathology.

If Americans vote for these sanctimonious liars, we deserve everything we reap.

Merry, uh, Christmas.

Robertogee, I think if we ever have a conversation, we probably would agree on several points, including that carefully analyzing information is important. Not shooting a messenger; just offering a cautionary note on the video you mentoned. My comment had nothing to do with politics or politicians -- please don't interpret my note as support for anybody.

to me, every issue is relevant and warrants scrutiny.

of course, the media must make money, and can/will overdo certain subjects to the
detriment of others that are arguably a helluva lot more important but don't sell as
well.

many pundits are uncomfortable talking about religion in general and particularly
candidate's faiths. but this is a direct consequence of not only the candidates
themselves, but of the record of the current President. W's many claims of
faith-based "guidance" in policy making decisions, makes the entire subject now
relevant as all hell (pardon the pun)

just as the record of the previous President made the candidate's devotion to
their marriages a relevant subject in 2000. and also the candidate's concern
and attention to the plight of the middle-class in 1992. age/vigor in '88, etc.

the perceived character/policy faults of every current/outgoing President
will always disproportionately influence the issues of the campaign to replace
them.
