The Benton County bubble
The Iconoclast detects a pop.
Iconoclast reader Libertas also notes that tax revenues are NOT down in neighboring Washington County. You are free to draw your own conclusions about prevailing political winds in the two counties.

That really is huge, considering that Rogers is home to that new regional mall that draws shoppers from the entire area. And in a month leading up to the holiday season? Wow.

There was an article over the holidays about the cancellation or scaling back of huge real estate developments in places such as Manhattan, Brooklyn, Boston and others. The point made by the writer was that big developments usually are hatched when times are flush, work begins and then the bubble bursts and the developers are left either holding the bag or asking for taxpayer bailouts.
Could there be a smaller-scale speculative construction bubble still inflating in the River Market area of Little Rock? It sometimes takes a while for bursting bubbles and other national trends to manifest themselves in Arkansas.
Just a thought?

It's them damn Mexicans! At night when Boss Womack is asleep dreaming of goose-stepping Aryans, them chicken-gutting, yard cleaning, roofers sneak into City Hall and steal the sale tax money to send back to Mexico via Western Union.
Disguised as cleaning people, them Mexicans can tread more silently than an Indian, and their skin color makes them invisible when the lights are off. No wonder you rarely catch them climbing over the fence at the border! The women hide small children under their native dresses, and it's the kids, with fingers so brown and small, who can reach in the till and grab the tax money. The money is then hid in their father's sombreros and snuck out into the night to start the trip back to the dusty hot homeland.
Doesn't matter that Boss Womack is a card carrying member of Rhineland Security, or that his SS has been trained in KGB-CIA torture techniques, the same Mexican stealthy methods used in centuries past, make them as unbeatable today as when ole Davy Crockett was shootin them down at the Alamo.
The way to nip this in the bud is for The Town Without Pity to give themselves up, secede from the Union and become a part of Mexico. No need for a bunch of rich white folks to die, circling the Lexuses will do no good. The Sons of Santa Ana are obviously too strong for them!
Or, hell....I could be wrong about all this. It could be that the sales taxes are down because people around Rogers are sick of their high-handed, holier than thou BS and figured out their money goes farther in Washington County. Either way, avoiding Rogers is always a good idea.

"Either way, avoiding Rogers is always a good idea."
Not if you enjoy a shot of good whiskey and a plate full of trout smothered in Mediterranean sauce at the Bonefish Grill!

No cookie-cutter big-box Red Lobster knock-off disguised as a high-caliber establishment and brimming with the folks Boss Womack calls "friend" would ever be a good enough reason to visit Rogers. For one, it's way too close to 6 Flags over Jesus for my comfort. The right reverend's helicopter might crash into the restaurant, you know.
The only reason I even go through the place is b/c Rogers managed to capture land on both sides of the freeway, so I am forced to if I wanna get to Mizzou for my lottery tickets and Sunday booze. Why couldn't they just stay on the east side of 540? I'd much rather claim I was in Bentonville, despite my lukewarm feelings for Wal-Mart.
Besides, everyone knows the majority of excellent, independent eateries are down in Washington Co.

Durango, how could that be? I thought Benton County was dry. Or is that just for the working stiffs who can't afford trout at Bonehead Grill and have to drive to Macadoodles for a six-pack? What a county!

So I guess that means Dan Coody should run for Congress.
What will Drew Pritt do?

think it has more to do with the mall being brand new this time last year. Everyone went there, even the Fayetteville crowd. That propped up the Rogers sales tax and deflated the Fayetteville revenues.
Now, that the newness has worn off and people realize it's just another mall, the Rogers comps are down because last year and the Fayetteville comps are up because people are starting to go back to the mall there.
If the Iconoclast was something more than a drive by intellectual, he'd look at the figures more closely.

Yep, Cassandra, Benton County is dry, but (thank God) somebody forgot to tell the folks at Bonefish which has quite a handsome, well-stocked bar. Ditto for Copeland's Famous New Orleans Restaurant in Rogers. And you're quite correct, Arkansas Student, about those top-notch eateries in Washington County. At the top of my list (of several favorites) is Bordino's in Fayette Nam. And on a summer night, what's not to love about margaritas and Tex-Mex snacks out on the patio at Jose's?
