The worm turns
Long ago, we decided the evidence was overwhelming. For whatever reason, Mike Huckabee decided to do whatever he could to free serial rapist/killer Wayne Dumond from prison. Legitimate belief that he was innocent/rehabilitated? Illegitimate belief that he was a Clinton conspiracy victim, etc.?
Now that Mike Huckabee is a leading presidential candidate, people with consciences have decided to speak up. Not just wackjob liberal columnists like me. But also conservative, Republican, Huckabee-friendly former Huckabee administration aides:
Arkansas Gov. Mike Huckabee made a rare personal appeal to release a convicted rapist from prison, a former top aide to the GOP presidential hopeful confirmed to ABC News.
Butch Reeves, formerly the criminal justice counsel to the Arkansas governor's office, handled all requests for clemencies and communications with prisoners.
His account of a key 1996 meeting between then-Gov. Huckabee and the state parole board largely supports an earlier version of the meeting by former board member Charles Chastain. It contrasts with Huckabee's position that he did not pressure the board."At their invitation, I went to their meeting. Someone brought up his case," Huckabee said Tuesday, describing his meeting with the board. "Frankly it was simply part of a broader discussion. I did not ask them to do anything."
In a phone interview, Reeves said Huckabee told the board members he thought there was "something nefarious" about the criminal justice system in Dumond's case, and that the rapist got a "raw deal." Huckabee said he believed Dumond's sentence, originally a life sentence plus 20 years, was "way out of bounds" for his crime, raping a 17-year-old high school student.
Reeves said he could recall only a few such appeals being made by a governor.
OK. Can we now get past the Huckabee lies? He pushed for Dumond's release. With help from Parole Board members -- Railey Steele and Leroy Brownlee, members he appointed and who needed the jobs -- he got them to release Dumond. Dumond killed again. Twice. Huckabee thought Dumond was OK. He was wrong. He won't admit it. He blames Dumond's subsequent Missouri rape/kiling spree on others -- Bill Clinton. Jim Guy Tucker, the Arkansas Times, the Parole Board, anybody but Mike Huckabee. He's a coward. He'll never admit a mistake. Should he have the nuclear football? You tell me. And don't believe me. Ask his aides.
Or, read Murray Waas. Looks like Butch Reeves may have been the Waas source.
PS -- This is powerful stuff. People who were Huckabee's people essentially say 1) he's a liar; 2) he knew Dumond was a multiple offender 3) he worked for Dumond's freedom anyway.
Big.
The video clip is a powerful ABC clip, now further enhanced by Reeves' account. Huckabee's bad day -- Dumond and Iran -- are all over the big papers. For example here. And also here. But Huckabee is also profiled on his religious views in a broad and positive article in NY Times. And the Wash. Post's Chris Cillizza continues to love him some Huckster, liar though he is.

Well Huck told Wolf B. that those 'folks' were lying. Hmm, who am I going to believe...

Ok, it's time to demand a retraction, not from Huck but from Max. I'm thinking you stated that entirely in sarcastic jest. You've given Huck a much fairer ride than the real wackjobs at ADG.

Yep. I've been watching that on the ol' "drive-by" CNN.
Quoting the Arkansas Times, they are.
I figure it won't be long before the Wolfman and Larry King are interviewing Max on the talking picture box.
So get ready dude. If the Huckster thinks you're about to get him in trouble, nationally, he's liable to REALLY place the name Max Brantley on the list with Bill Clinton, Jim Guy Tucker, the politically-motivated Parole Board Members, and everybody else that is really to blame for releasing that mad rapist killer from prison.
It couldn't be his fault. He's a preacher, for crissake.

"i was wrong"
"i made a mistake"
"i learned from it"
"i'm very sorry"
"i humbly apologize"
i would seriously consider voting for the first Presidential candidate who publicly said such things.

I guess all those Gay Preacher (you see on the News) in churches can't be at fault either because they are preachers ...
Get real!

If Huck continues to make a good showing, expect a wowzer of a Willie Horton ad from some group in the next battleground state ...Gravy Boat Veterans for Truth, maybe. Just showing idiot Dumond's mug shot for 15 seconds during the narrative should be enough to cause any semi-thinking person to wonder "how could he release THAT?" Maybe they can pay enough to out the gang who did the Home Castration of Wayne....what is the statute of limitations on Nut-Ectomy specially if the victim has been terminated by the gummint? Some good old boys, maybe dressed in some of jim guy tuckers old flannel shirts and caps saying "we knew he was guilty, why couldn't a governor be as smart as us, huh?"

I agree Sanford.. there is no way the neocons with all of their precious war chests will allow Huckabee a pass.
Jeralyn Merrit takes on the whole affair at FDL tonight (at my name)

Saw a story on channel 11 and apparently, all Huck did was write a letter explaining Dumond's options to him. A sitting governor....has nothing better to do than write letters to convicts explaining the parole process. A relatively NEW governor at that. Yeah, Mike, given that or the weight loss story, I'm believing the latter. If you get out of government (and you really should) you have a great career as a fiction writer.

Bill Clinton did not met with the Parole Board and ask them to parole Wayne Dumond. Jim Guy Tucker did not meet with the Parole Board and ask them to parole Wayne Dumond. The Governor who did meet with the Parole Board when Dumond got released was Mike Huckabee. He can spin this all he wants, but those are the cold hard facts of this sad tale. Two women in Missouri are dead because Wayne Dumond got released from prison, and Mike Huckabee had his hands in it. Being a former minister, he should have the decency to at least call those two mothers and say he is sorry this happened to their daughters, but that would require someone who had a spine and was willing to admit he made a mistake. Huckabee is lacking in both of those areas!

Never admit a mistake. . . Never admit a mistake . . . something about that reminds me a current political leader, but I just can't put my finger on him.

Let's remember what was going on in Arkansas and America in 1996. Bill Clinton got elected to a second term. That really pissed off the rightwingers. For a year or 2 before the election Richard Mellon Scaife had paid goons in Arkansas trying to dig up dirt on Bill. The one I knew had a thing for underage girls and before I found out what he did for a living I was already off him about 20 miles.
In January of 1994 Robert B. Fiske was appointed special prosecutor to investigate Whitewater and the death of Vince Foster. Kenneth Starr took over the following August and you know the rest of the story. Remember Hillary said there was a vast rightwing conspiracy? Well, by god there was and I figure someone leaned on Huckabee or more probably slid him some money under the table to get Wayne Dumond out of prison. Why? Because Dumond raped a distant cousin of Bill Clinton, and someone must have had a plan for Dumond that didn't work out.....because the man was bat shit crazy and obviously uncontrollable.
Someday in the future someone will move a rock and find the plans they had for Dumond...the plans Mike Huckabee was a minor party to..when he pushed for Dumond to be released. Huck's best bet is to start apologizing and say he got wrong information and he sorta when overboard on that love of Jesus BS and let a bad guy go free to rape and kill again. Too bad Dumond died in prison....wonder what light he could have shed on this matter?
The facts have got Huckabee caught by the short hairs....he better adopt a new Dumond line and start praying real hard that the sheeple are as dumb as he thinks we are.....or he's going to wake up 20 points behind Tancredo in the coming weeks. His little bubble is going to end with a big POP.

I think the sad thing about this is that the issue peaked too soon. Jan 3 is the Iowa Caucus and Jan 8 is NH primary election. Who knows how many mall shootings, kidnappings and earthquakes among other bright shiny objects will pop up and wipe this story off the map? Huck gets another slick-tongued free ride. Unless, Rudy or Mitt do a docu-drama tv ad about it, just before the votes.
The best that can be hoped for is for Huck to keep denying it, thus keeping it alive.

Despite the overwhelming evidence, the spin has begun or the spun has begin, whatever, beginning with ole huck being "Willie Hortoned", clinton's fault, his relatives castrated dumond, besides he was just having consensual sex with an inbred 16 year old and clinton influenced the decision so dumond would be given a long sentence, dumond didn't have a predisposition to violence anyway, huck was just trying to get dumond a fair sentence, the parole board were all clinton's appointees, they didn't have to release him if they didn't want to, its all lies, etc. etc. etc.

Hey muleboy303,
Your name says it all and it is appropriate that you are a Huckster apologist. As a mule, you look like you have the goods but really are sterile. Sounds a lot like the Huckster. He looks like a conservative until you need his service and then he can't produce.
If the Huckster had said "I'm wrong, I'm sorry, etc" back when he made the mistake then maybe it would work. Instead he spent years in Arkansas and months on the national stage blaming it on Clinton, Tucker, and now that he doesn't have anybody to blame, he's saying I'm sorry. Doesn't fly.
In fact, this is just one of his many problems. The Arkansas Journal continues to demonstrate what a false prophet he really has become for the conservative movement. Back when he enjoyed the power of incumbency it worked for him. As the mule in Huck's army, I suggest you consult with John Mark who leads your internet charge and learn the retreat strategy now.

How can you tell who the Baptist's are? They're the ones who won't make eye contact in the liquor store.
Why do you always take 2 Baptists when you go fishing? One would drink all your beer.
