Wal-Mart retreats ...
... From the movie download business. Is that good for Netflix? Not necessarily.

MAYBE there's something else at work here? I know it troubles me to project that WallyMart could become the "single source" for ALL consumer needs, i.e. a monopoly. Renting films is just ONE of the many things I'm not interested in from them... For example the optical shop disappeared from ours a short while back.

I downloaded a flick from Amazon/TiVo and it took damn near all day (no exaggeration) for the thing to download on my DSL connection.

Everyone I know loves Netflix. We can get lots of movies via pay-per-view now, but we never do. For one thing, the Comcast user interface is HORRIBLE. Maybe Apple will fix that.

It's hard to beat my $1.25/day video rental store.

We love Netflix.
The selection can't be beat, I don't care if I see a DVD the moment it comes out and there is no local video store around here. They are all chains....with crappy selections.
We love Gamefly too. It has saved us sooooo much money in the "this $60 game sucks" category.

I rely on the minimal $4.95/month, 1 at a time, limit of 2 monthly Netflix plan for anything other than popular theatrical releases. I'm a cheapskate but a lot of my rentals go unwatched.

I quit Netflix 'cause they kept sending broken or damaged DVDs...
With two little ones we don't really have much time anyway so we just usually go to the movie store...

One of the larger problems is beyond Walmart-Netflix ability to solve: most personal computers are not equipped with sufficient video capacity yet. Perhaps Apple-Mac has it conquered but Bill Gates is light years away from something that resembles the quality of home theater. To make dwlds viable you need a video projector. That is the only way I could enjoy them. When those prices come down then perhaps dwlds will make a comeback.

I love Netflix. They have a new feature where you can watch some movies online that works quite well for me with DSL. It doubles the amount of time you have to watch movies because it's included with the account. For now, the selection is limited. Hopefully it will expand.
You have to wait a bit for them to start downloading, but after that it's fine. Have to use IE instead of Firefox.
