Bulldogs and Browning's
Enough politics. I'm going to indulge myself.
GOOD DOGS: The American Kennel Club announced today its annual list of the 10 most popular pure-bred dogs. The boring labrador retriever remains on top. Ho hum. The good news is that the bulldog has waddled its way back into to the top 10 for the first time in 70 years. Their "docile, even-tempered personalities ... belie their tough-guy image," breeders are quoted. Indeed. I've had four of them and currently a French cousin (pictured). They're the best. And nothing skateboards like Tyson the bulldog.
GOOD FOOD: All the talk of Browning's restaurant lately -- new owners plan some improvements but retention of the time-honored traditions -- was irresistible. I had to drop by the venerable Kavanaugh restaurant for lunch. I swore I was going to have a plate lunch or fried chicken or hamburger. But no. The Saltillo plate siren called yet again. Readers have discussed before love/hate of Browning's. I won't belabor it or argue. Great lunch by my lights. Great service. The warm, fresh old school chips and hot sauce were particularly good.
But here's the really good news. New owner Richard Harrison (Pizza Cafe) says Browning's is very close to adding Cordell's potato salad, chicken salad and roast beef (perfectly seasoned, rare top sirloin) to the offerings, thanks to new co-worker Dean Cline, who owned the late Cordell's. These will be available for takeout, just as they were at Cordell's deli in Riverdale in the old days. Also a French dip sandwich. Can the Cordell's funeral tray be far behind? It's a little embarrassing to say how happy this development makes me. Harrison said Cline turned out about 20 roasts for Little Rock families' Christmas table. Nice idea.

Comments
The funeral tray really takes me back, but more recently, I'm a fan of Lindsey's "sympathy platter" of a couple pounds of barbecue with the barbecued link sausages on top. Whew. Almost makes me wish for a death in the family...

My Parsons Russell Terrier can whip your French Bulldog and your cat in the same fight.
ARK. BLOG: Fifi is a lover, not a fighter. And there's no chance of your ever finding a cat in my house, unless a dirty trickster were to secretly place one there to annoy me.

Bully for the bully breeds! I'm a boxer fan, myself, and am pleased to see bulldogs join the Top 10. Now if we can only get Boston terriers up there (perhaps to replace the neurotic Yorkies or overrated Alsatians... uh, German shepherds).

They are both GREAT w/kids. My dog growing up (Shiner) was a boxer, and our daughter has 2 pugs. Think pugs a bit more prone to physical woes, allergies, etc. but they are LOVERS all the way. Boxers rule!!

First time in over 20yrs I've not had a boxer in my family. Had to put my 11yo Tessa down last month. Couple of months before that my 11yo great dane Maggie. I miss them both.
still have a Great Dane Max, (thinks he's a 5lb lapdog) and a pekingese Jenna.
Kitties... Elliott, Splat Kat and Ridlee. all are family. each has own their own personality. I'd hate to decide which is better.

Max, just when I was thinking of defending you against James in another post I find you don't like cats. Well, hisssssss. Fight your own fights.
My vote for best dog? A dobie. I've had three and they were all sweet dogs who scared the bejesus out of one or two folks I didn't want to entertain anyway.
I'd have had a fourth but I rescued a puppy walking down the middle of the street. You know the type, a tiny, loving ball of black fur that fit in the palm of one hand, one that would make a nice little house dog -- all sixty pounds of him, eight years later.
But he does know who's boss around here. He "yes, ma'ams" the cats who raised him, then chases the neighbor's cats if they get in the yard. Dotes on my husband and ignores me unless there's food involved.

Glad to hear someone likes dobies. The one in our neighborhood is giving me the creeps and is not long for this world. I turn the curve to go down our hill last week to see this dog half-crouched like he's going to lunge, showing a good many teeth, standing in the MIDDLE of the road! I get that he considers the road "his territory", but there are a lot of folks who take that curve FAST with big trucks that can't stop on a dime and won't hit the ditch to avoid him.
As for our house, we're big fans of the dear, sweet Basset Hound. Emma is a wonderful and loving dog and she keeps the racoons at bay....mostly by baying at them. I do love the sweet face of a bulldog, however, and as E won't live forever, I'm keeping them in mind.

Surely you realize I was jesting. Our sweet Pippin will lick you death but she has this thing with larger dogs. She will never roll over or lay down for them. Most of the time at home she's bugging you for a belly rub or enticing you for a game of tug of war. But she has this thing about larger dogs I simply cannot understand. Our neighbor walks his large German Shepard past the house and Pippin, the dog, almost breaks a window to get at him. She's a whopping 14" high of whup up Type A. She would rather chase/attack cats than eat fresh beef. But, like Fifi, she is a lover at home.

A close friend works with a boxer rescue group (BoxAr) that has all ages/varying degrees of 'purity.' It's worth checking out if you're interested in boxers. (It's located in Clinton, I believe, but a Google search will work.) But I'm with Nanc...MUTTS RULE!!! (Especially my little terrier mix that wandered into our yard last spring.)

Thanks, Zelda, I'll check it out.
I'll gladly take a mutt - we have checked the puunds and there are LOTS of huge dogs available, but we will have to keep ours inside.
