Edwards out
Yesterday, his campaign said he'd stay in until the convention. Today, the Washington Post reports, John Edwards will announce in a speech in New Orleans that he's quitting his bid to be the Democratic presidential nominee. Aides say he won't endorse either Obama or Clinton, the Post says.
UPDATE: Yes, as blogger moxiemoron points out, Giuliani also dropped out of the race today. Should have mentioned it.

Comments
Edwards signature theme in campaign '08 has been "i'll FIGHT for you (the little people)"
HRC's record is one of FIGHTing (often successfully) against the GOP 'neanderthals'
whereas Obama emphasizes 'UNITY', 'Coming together', a 'new kind of politics', etc. and is not perceived as a "fighter"
which makes me think that HRC will get the majority of Edward's voters
(especially the 'hair-dresser' vote, as BHO has had the same hair style for over 10 years and HRC changes hers with regularity)

Edwards would have been a great prez; I hope he continues to fight for the American worker. But I really hope his wife gets well enough one day that she's able/willing to run for office.

I'm sure this will help Hillary, since while Bill goes around pointing out the obvious (Obama is black) she is now the sole white candidate.

The simple truth is the Democrats have too many good people running this year while the Republicans have squat. Poor Edwards.....hooked up with Kerry the last time and now running in a crowded field of greats....it's just his timing that was off. Edwards will be McCain's age the next time he'll have a good shot at the White House, after Hillary and Barack are finished, ya know.
For what it's worth, John Edwards can eat at my table any time in the future and I'd gladly pick up his kids from school or fix his flat. I hope the next administration finds him a job where he can do us the most good. How about a Supreme Court seat about February, 2009?

Edwards: This punk made a fortune off the backs of good companies that employed a lot of working class people. Putting companies out of business is a hallmark of the dumb folks with the socialist Democratic Party. Old Zelda and Dumb By Inches are heart broken huh? Well, just move your lazy butts over to the servant quarters at his mansion in North Carolina. He may find a place for you on his staff.

Thank you BJ for calling my party by its proper name, an 'i' and a 'c' added. You know that is considered heresy with the repubs.
Edwards made a fortune alright, a fortune he split with his clients who had been screwed, mooed and tatooed by greedy corporate conglomerates who think they should be immune from the consequences of their dirty deeds.

Just think if John Edwards had stepped across the hall to represent huge corporate clients by getting them no-bid government contracts and defending them against corruption and liability charges
so that those overpriced contracts will be paid by the Barretts of this world he would be Barrett's hero now.

Big money on their MSM toys won.. All remaining candidates are owned by the same big players... Both of the two Americas lost.. considering only half a dozen States voters had any variety of choice on the ballot whatsoever. Primaries should not be like this.

It is unfortunate that Edwards had to drop out. This will make it easier for the Republican party to steal the election. I fear that this country is not ready for the first black or female President and will not rally behind either. My opinion is that the majority of voters will vote within their comfort zone giving the Republican party another win regardless of who the candidate is.

To all the people who think the Democratic Party doesn't have a chance without Edwards:
The man didn't win his home state...not in the last election...not in this primary.
The ONLY possible excuse is that you think the country is too racist or misogynist to elect the others.
Then you have to take into account that there are enough progressives among those misogynists and racists to beat the white male Republican nominee.
Doesn't seem likely to me, but then again I think the country is better than that.

Especially today after the performance of our, as dumb as, not Mexican, not honest, Attorney General Michael Mukasey, you damn betch ya John Edwards as the next Attorney General of the United States makes perfect sense! As FK'ed up as our Justice system is, the job of Attorney General is nearly as important as the office of President. John Edwards would be perfect! Save us John!
