Freedom's just another word ...
Interesting tidbit from Morning News coverage of a debate on the effort to vote Benton County wet. An opponent of alcohol sales equated a vote on the proposition with "mob rule." I kid you not.
Routon's Citizens for Choice 2008 has circulated petitions the last several months in Benton County in an attempt to get the issue of changing Benton County to a wet county on the November ballot. Jones called the idea of putting the issue to a vote "goofy" at Monday's gathering.
"Do we really want to put this to vote?" Jones asked. "I don't believe our country runs by a mob rule."
What folks like Jones prefer is the punitive state law that all but prohibits votes on alcohol sales in counties where the religionists rule. You don't have to do much dreaming to think of other issues they'd prefer to put off limits to the democratic process.

It's not just Benton County that has this mentality, Craighead is the same way. These people all think that allowing the sale of alcohol is going to lead the whole county to a path of destruction. They talk about all the drunk drivers that will be on the streets and conveniently overlook the fact that a lot of them are already there and driving because they have to go out of the county to get their booze and then drive back so they are on the road longer than they would be if they could get it locally.

Best Quote Ever:
"It's not a moral issue, it's an ergonomic issue," Jones fired back.
What???
Oh, well, I guess that, if I were drunk all the time, I'd probably slouch and get carpal tunnel or something. It's good that he's on the forefront of caring about workers' comfort and health.

You beat me to it, Kevin. But then what can you expect from someone who thinks "mob rule" and voting on an issue are the same thing? Talk about goofy . . .

Now you guys in lower Arkansas get glimpse of the region which produces Jim Holts, Boozmans, Duggars.
We often wonder about in-breeding amongst them.
If you want more howlers coated with gross servings of ignorance scroll on down the Morning News page to the Immigration article and read the comments.

Should this measure get on the ballot and voted in, before long you might have some churches in Benton County being converted into liquor stores, as has been done in North Little Rock. Now that could significantly add to the local tax base!

Don't forget that Faulker County is right there too. A good friend who is a member at nearly EVERY private club in town doesn't want Faulker Co to go "full wet"...why? "I like the private clubs because I like having a drink with a meal every now and then, but if we go wet, there will be liquor stores on every corner." Really. Pulaski County, with it's larger population and wet status doesn't have them "on every corner". Neither does Washington (Springdale AND Fayetteville), Poinsett (Trumann and Harrisburg) and I'm fairly sure Ft. Smith doesn't either (can't remember the county--help me out DBI)
A license for a store is actually VERY hard to get. Yet, there's this myth that won't die.

A good friend of mine admitted that he had been paid to preach in a little shed with a plywood steeple looking apparatus nailed to the roof. The man paying him was the local liqour store owner who was trying to keep out a competitor by claiming his store was going to be too close to a church. It worked. Thank God for all the god fearing people looking out for us.
